Japanesse Trailer For Animated Film STARSHIP TROOPERS: INVASION

The Japanese trailer for Shinji Aramaki's CG animated film Starship Troopers: Invasion has been posted via Movie walker. Based on Robert Heinlein's sci-fi novel which been loosely adapted into a film franchise (and even an anime series), the general story tells a futuristic military waging an interstellar war against a hostile species of large insects known as the Arachnids or "Bugs".

In this version, the film is set ten years after Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers while ignoring the rest of the sequels as canon. Some of the production designs will feature the new starships, power suits and the robotic Marauder with the unique "mecha" aesthetic that you come to expect in Japanese anime.

The script is written by
Flint Dille (Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay) and produced by Joseph Chou (Halo Legends) through Sola Digital Arts.

A
distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The
team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship
John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the
survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl
Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a
clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes
missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged
with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence
than they ever could have imagined....

The direct-to-DVD film arrives this summer. You'll find the Japanese trailer embedded below.

5-25-77: STAR WARS Memories, and the Man Who Predicted Its Success

Thirty-five years ago today, Star Wars was released in theatres in the U.S., instantly striking a very popular chord as crowds lined up and waited for hours to see George Lucas' old-fashioned new-fangled space opera.

I remember it well. A friend cut class on opening day to see it first, and reported back with disgust on the unresolved ending: 'If they don't make a sequel, it'll be worthless,' or words to that effect. Another friend and I waited in line for more than three hours in the parking lot of the old Avco Center Cinema in Westwood, California, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and were overjoyed when we barely squeezed in. (Otherwise, we'd have to wait another two hours or more.) But we were young, and when the opening shot had concluded, we turned to each other with our mouths agape, and sat enthralled throughout.

Here's a fun footnote that I stumbled upon while going through my magazine collection after a recent move: A year before Star Wars opened, one man predicted that it would be the science fiction film of the decade.

In the July 1976 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, film columnist Baird Searles wrote:

I got a preview of a film this month that will probably only be going into production just before this sees print.

Bear in mind that magazine print schedule requirements would mean Searles turned in his column several months before July. He continues:

What do I mean by a preview, then? The gist of the script accompanied by a series of conceptual paintings which included sets, costumes, characters, and hardware; if it only half lives up to the promise shown, it will be the s/f film of the 1970s.

Searles then expresses his conviction about the filmmaker, a belief many science fiction fans probably held at that time:

What really gives me the confidence to come on this strong this far in advance is that it is written and produced by George Lucas, who is best known for American Graffiti, but who made an indelible impression on me with THX-1138, a film short on concepts but very, very long on style.

George, we had such faith in you then!

Lucas, like most great filmmakers, is not about to repeat himself; Star Wars -- the upcoming film -- is very, very long on concept. He obviously knows his science fiction; the script kept reminding me (in the best sense) of Heinlein, Herbert, Bradley, and above all, E.E. Smith given a contemporary sensibility. There is a totalitarian Galactic Empire; there are rebel planets, aliens, robots, battles in space, a superpowerful elite, laser swords, wizards, and just about everything you always wanted to see on screen but knew nobody would put there.

Here's another good observation for science fiction fans:

Perhaps the best clue to its science fictional sophistication is the fact that the film has nothing to do with Earth. Even in Forbidden Planet, the best example of this kind of thing to hit the screen so far, the ship comes from Earth; Star Wars is well beyond that.

Searles concludes:

Ballentine will release the novelization in the fall. Then all we do is keep our fingers crossed that it will be released on screen.

Ah, we were so young then.

Searles reviewed films for F&SF from 1970 to 1984 and wrote a book review column for Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine from 1979 to 1993, when he passed away.

What are your memories of first seeing Star Wars?

With Iron Sky selling well around the world Vuorensola plans to return to that world in a big way, with both a three episode TV miniseries to explain how the Nazis got on the moon in the first place as well as a big screen sequel, but first he's got a little something else in the works.

Vuorensola will begin production in 2013 on I Killed Adolf Hitler, a time traveling comedy based on the Eisner Award winning graphic novel by Jason.

In this full-color graphic novel, Jason posits a strange, violent world
in which contract killers can be hired to rub out pests, be they
dysfunctional relatives, abusive co-workers, loud neighbors, or just
annoyances in general -- and as you might imagine, their services are in
heavy demand. One such killer is given the unique job of traveling back
in time to kill Adolf Hitler in 1939... but things go spectacularly
wrong. Hitler overpowers the would-be assassin and sends himself to the
present, leaving the killer stranded in the past. The killer eventually
finds his way back to the present by simply waiting the decades out as
he ages, and teams up with his now much-younger girlfriend to track down
the missing fascist dictator...

Working from a script by DC Walker the film will be produced by London's Studio Eight, Finalnd's Blind Spot Pictures and Germany's Niama Film.

[Updated with trailer embed]

Japanese director Toshiaki Toyoda carved out a very distinct niche for himself with his first trio of narrative features. Pornostar, Blue Spring and Nine Souls planted the director quite firmly as his nation's pre-eminent auteur of teen angst, his films a stylish portrayal of youth coping with crisis through violence. Toyoda has had some crisis of his own since then, legal issues pushing the director into a sort of self imposed exile.

Since his return to the big screen Toyoda's work has been decidedly more introspective, even melancholic when compared to his early pieces but it looks like he's getting back to his early form with the Tatsuya Fujiwara and Ryuhei Matsuda starring I'm Flash.

Written

crucial decision.

Pretty much the entire cast of the original is returning as well, including the secondary Asgardian characters played by Idris Elba and Tadanobu Asano.

That this is somewhat obvious casting makes it no less good. Mikkelsen is a spectacular actor and should fit in rather nicely indeed.

Blood, Boobs and Body Parts Galore in the KILLER MOTEL Trailer

Director Kazuya Ogawa (Pink Subaru) and producer Akira Yamaguchi (Robogeisha) attempt to put a distinctly Japanese spin on the American slasher film with Killer Motel. Assembling a cast packed with beautiful, promiscuous "sex junkies", taking them deep into the woods and leaving them at the mercy of a "bewitching" motel landlady and her chainsaw-wielding groundsman, the film looks set to deliver on its promise of "action-packed horror with an erotic twist and over-the-top splatter effects." The first trailer has arrived and while the English-language voiceover was certainly a misstep, the film itself seems to know its target audience and what they demand from a film like this. While there's no denying it all looks very silly, if Killer Motel comes with a knowing sense of humour, like similarly-themed predecessor Zombie Ass from Noboru Iguchi, it could prove a fun entry in the late night sub-genre of Japanese low budget splatter flicks.

NO SLEEP, NO SURRENDER Charts ASTRON-6's Rise To The Exploitation Promised Land

The greatest benefit of writing for this Twitch is the soapbox effect.

This site gives our staff the ability to champion projects that we believe in that often fall through the cracks at larger outlets. Astron-6 is a perfect example of this effect. Ever since we first scoped out their brilliant short film Lazer Ghosts 2: The Return to Laser Cove, we've had our fingers on the pulse of this crew of miscreants from Winnipeg and have attempted to bring you the latest news as well as promote them as the incredible talents they are.

After a successful run of short films, released last winter on DVD by Troma Entertainment, Astron-6 produced two feature films almost simultaneously, Manborg and Father's Day. Manborg was a self-funded micro-budget ($1,000) sci-fi adventure that slayed them at Fantastic Fest and numerous other film festivals since last fall. Father's Day was, well, something else.

Father's Day began its life as a fake trailer, not unlike the Hobo with a Shotgun trailer that landed fellow Canadian Jason Eisener his first feature film. However, rather than the almost magical experience shown in the Hobo with a Shotgun Making of Doc, "More Blood, More Heart", Astron-6 signed a deal with Lloyd Kaufman at Troma, and things seemed to have gone downhill ever since.

No Sleep, No Surrender is a feature length documentary from the Astron-6 folks showing the entire production process behind Father's Day. Every step of the journey is detailed, from conception and pre-production to distribution, and it seems to get a bit ugly by the end. As you'll see in the second half of this trailer, Kaufman stooped to selling bootleg DVDs of the film during his tour for its opening, and when Astron-6 first saw the poster design, they were perturbed to find their logo missing while Troma's was in plain sight. Bad times all around.

Yesterday I posted a rather ranty update to the Blu-ray specs for Father's Day, which dropped several key bonus features and the proposed soundtrack CD. This announcement coming just one day after Best Movie News Ever premiered the No Sleep No Surrender trailer. Well, it would appear that this is par for the course and Troma is taking revenge on Astron-6 for daring to speak out against their poor treatment by the legendary independent studio. I'm very close to boycotting Troma product, except that I love this damned film so much that I can't imagine not picking it up and reviewing it. The film deserves to be seen, but part of me, and I'm sure most of Astron-6, wishes that they'd had a viable crowd funding option for this so that they could have retained control over it from beginning to end. Thankfully, they've taken that tact with their next project Fireman, which I'll link below for those of you inclined to donate.

Today on their Facebook page, Astron-6 deflected questions about the changes to their Father's Day disc, instead urging fans to question Troma about the decision. However, in the same breath, they made sure to let people know that No Sleep No Surrender will be available in some form, and I hope it's in a way that most directly benefits Astron-6, who deserve more support than they appear to have gotten.

Viva Astron-6!

Gary Oldman Is The Top Grossing Actor Of All Time

The statement is tucked away as a footnote in a casting announcement - which hardly seems to be the sort of attention it deserves - but it warms my heart to see that such a statement could be applied to a performer like Oldman who has always seemed to prize consistent quality over having the biggest, flashiest parts in the biggest, flashiest movies. Though, obviously, he's certainly been in some big ones.

His recent stints in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies and the Harry Potter franchise are what pushed Oldman over the top - and I would be curious to know if it was Harrison Ford that he bested or if someone had toppled Ford from that perch first - but Oldman's success lies not in chasing trends but in simply being very, very good at what he does.

HAVE YOUR SAY: It Finally Happened...THE EXORCIST Is Being Remade.

Some things are holy. If a person were to ask me "What film properties are
off limits for remakes?" sitting at the very tip top of that list would be The Exorcist . William Peter Blatty's novel, and subsequent cinematic
adaption by WIlliam Friedkin, about a little girl named Reagen who runs
afoul of a very nasty demon named Pazuzu, single-handedly kicked of the
possession sub-genre in horror films, and sent people running back to the
church for protective spiritual cover.

Now, with the recent success of films like Paranormal Activity and The
Last Exorcism (and even the resounding, and deserving flop of The Devil
WIthin), evil spectral entities and the Big Horned Guy are viable business
again. That means it was only a matter of time before little Reagan was
back peeing on carpets and spewing profanities at priests.

Yup. The Exorcist is being remade.

Morgan Creek, the company behind The Departed and The Exorcist III, is on
board to produce a whopping ten-part re-envisioning of The Exorcist for
television, and it's going to be helmed by Martha Marcy May Marlene
director Sean Durkin.

I quite liked Durkin's film about a young woman trying to pull her life
and head back together after being involved with a cult, but I don't know
quite how I feel about a novice director being handed the greatest horror
property in the world, and it being stretched to ten episodes. Apparently
we will get a detailed portrayal of the events leading up to the exorcism
(my personal favorite section of the Friedkin film actually) and then the
aftermath of the tragic event, on the McNeil family.

Will the uber-classic Dick Smith make-up design be adhered to? will we get a glimpse of the absentee father? Will we get to see more
about the corridors of power in the Vatican, and how the taboo practice
of exorcism is handled? Will we see more of Father Karras' struggle
with faith? Will we get to hang out with Father Merrin in Iraq more? Will
this be updated to take place in modern times? Will we get the boundary
pushing as far as profanity and finding shall we say "creative uses" for a
crucifix? Is director Sean Durkin the right man for the job? is there a
perfect new "Reagan" running around out there? (I can just see stage
mothers scurrying to buy up all the child-sized nightgowns in Tinseltown
today, in preparation for those big casting calls).

Yes, these questions beg answers.

Before any real speculation can be done though, a network needs to be
announced. Where is Sean Durkin's The Exorcist going to land? Personally I
can't see it working anywhere else but on cable television, and given the
audiences numbers and budgets of show's like Game Of Thrones, I'd say it's
a good bet this project could indeed end up at HBO or Showtime, or hell (no
pun!) maybe even an entity like Netflix will step up and give Pazuzu a
home.

You know, dear Twitch readers, this is not the first time The Exorcist has
almost come to the home screen. I clearly remember years back, Dakota Fanning, fresh off her star making turn in Man On Fire, was rumored to
play young Reagan in a proposed two-parter for Fox TV. Anybody else recall
that? To add, The Exorcist is currently seeing another re-envisoning, as a
stage play, starring Brooke Shields and Richard Chamberlain as Chris
Mcneil and Father Merrin. Newcomer Emily Yetter will play young Reagan
(though Emily is a bit older than the character) in the live adaption
which begins it's preview run July 3 in the Gil Gates Theater of the
Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

So I ask you...is remaking The Exorcist as a mini-series going to bring
about the 2012 apocalypse? Or, will it herald a new era of horror that
will save the planet and create a geek utopia?

Have Your Say!

Hollywood Grind: Barry Sonnenfeld and the Value of a Journeyman

The sequel that the original deserved, Men in Black 3 is not exactly fresh, but it is an honest journeyman's effort by director Barry Sonnenfeld, and features a peachy-fine performance by Josh Brolin, who easily outshines putative star Will Smith.

That in itself is something of an accomplishment; Smith has been so hell-bent on creating and maintaining a bad-ass indestructible uber-macho on-screen superior smirking presence over the past decade that he's become nearly insufferable. It's something of a refreshing marvel to see Smith play second banana to Brolin.

Did Smith himself realize, after four years away from the screen, that he needed to dial it down, or did Sonnenfeld encourage him along a goofier, more relaxed, more empathetic path? Either way, it works, and clears the road for Brolin to deliver an easygoing piece of work, suggesting (but not entirely imitating) the younger Tommy Lee Jones.

That's all part of the highly-skilled craft involved in being a journeyman director. To be clear, by using the term "journeyman," I'm not damning with faint praise or denigrating Sonnenfeld's talents. Instead, I have in mind the idea of an educated apprentice who has learned his trade and has been practicing it effectively and professionally for years. Sonnenfeld may not be a master filmmaker, but he is fully capable of making sprightly, pleasing entertainment, and that's no easy task in today's environment of studio-driven, big-budget, blockbuster pictures.

In the 30s and 40s, Sonnenfeld would likely have made a good living handling whatever assignment he was given by a studio. He would have made more pictures in more genres; it's easy to imagine him handling a swashbuckler followed by an adventure in the desert followed by a screwball comedy followed by a "woman's picture" followed by a chamber drama. Perhaps he would have started in the Silent Era as a cameraman, serving his apprenticeship in that field before convincing an enterprising producer that he had the right stuff to call the shots.

In reality, Sonnenfeld found his calling while attending NYU in the early 1980s, initially shooting nine porn films in nine days before fortuituously meeting fellow NYU graduates Joel and Ethan Coen, who needed a cinematographer for a trailer intended to raise money for their first feature. Sonnenfeld photographed both the trailer and the feature: Blood Simple.

Sonnenfeld's work with the Coens extended to the brightly comic Raising Arizona and the darkly artificial Miller's Crossing, but during this period he also shot Danny DeVito's black comedy Throw Momma From the Train, as well as Rob Reiner's nostalgic romance When Harry Met Sally and murderously dramatic Misery.

He moved into the director's chair withThe Addams Family, which was financially successful, followed by For Love of Money, which was not. The two films marked his comedy territory, however, the former mining laughs from deadpan expressions and ornate production design, and the latter showcasing a frantic lead (Michael J. Fox) against a backdrop of a dispassionate, beautifully detailed world. Neither film had a strong script -- The Addams Family relied upon its premise and For Love of Money leaned heavily on Fox's somewhat limited charm and star power -- yet they showed that Sonnenfeld could squeeze as much juice as possible out of his material.

Courtesy of credited screenwriters Paul Rudnick and Scott Frank, respectively, Sonnenfeld delivered better movies in Addams Family Values and Get Shorty because he had better material, with more richly-delineated characters that allowed his comic instincts to accent rather than substitute for depth.

And those films set up the success of Men in Black, featuring wonderful chemistry between grizzled character actor Tommy Lee Jones and ascending star Will Smith. Their relative positions in the celebrity firmament reflected their relationship in the movie, with Jones training Smith, knowing (and accepting) that the younger man will eventually rise to greater prominence.

Sonnenfeld stumbled badly with Wild Wild West, Big Trouble, and Men in Black II in the next few years, and RV was pretty much a complete disaster. It's not so much that Sonnenfeld lost his touch as much as it is true that the material was not good enough. Certainly, the studio director who does not write his own material can shape and influence the script; Sonnenfeld maintains he did this with the original Men in Black but was unable to do so sufficiently with Wild Wild West and Men in Black II, as examples. Beyond that, the director is responsible for a film's tone, and Sonnenfeld acknowledges the glaring problems in that regard on Wild Wild West.

And that's why Men in Black 3 is such a pleasant surprise. Whatever behind-the-scenes turmoil the film may have suffered -- rumors were rife that production shut down so the script could be rewritten, among other reported tribulations -- what counts, finally, is what's on the screen. It's not as good as the original, but it is definitely an improvement on the sequel, and that, too, is the mark of a respectable journeyman. As a consummate professional, Barry Sonnenfeld deserves a commensurate degree of respect for his craftsmanship.

Hollywood Grind is a column on filmmakers working within and through the studio system. Men in Black 3 opens wide in North America on Friday, May 25.

[SHITTY UPDATE!!] Make Every Day FATHER'S DAY With Astron-6 On Blu-ray This June 12th!

UPDATE! In their infinite wisdom, Troma have decided to scratch nearly all of the great sounding bonus material from the Blu-ray release of Father's Day. There will be no director's commentary, no feature length making-of, and, most sadly, no CD soundtrack. This is truly a kick in the balls to Troma's highest quality feature in at least a decade, and makes me very upset. This is an asinine decision, since all of the material is already prepared and would probably be a very minimal cost to include. I cannot get my head around their logic, but suffice it to say, that I'm really bummed out.

I'm just going to say it:

Astron-6 are among the best filmmaking teams working today.

Sure, some of you won't get it, and some of those who do get it won't like it, but you'd be wrong. Father's Day is already in my top ten films for 2012, and it's going to be an uphill climb for any film to knock it out of that spot. Their crazy attention to detail in recreating their favorite sleazy exploitation favorites of the '70s and '80s is eerie and provides a wonderful point of departure for fans of similar films to get into the action.

This June 12th, just in time for, well, Father's Day, Troma is releasing their latest stab in the eye of decency on 3 disc Blu-ray/DVD/<del>CD</del> combo pack. There are <del>plenty of</del> extras to be had, including <del>a director's commentary that I'm looking forward to after experiencing their remarkable commentaries for the previous DVD collection of their short films</del>. <del>Most exciting among the extras is probably the inclusion of a CD soundtrack for the film, a soundtrack that is steeped in the '80s synthtastic exploitation feel up to its eyeballs</del>.

I can<del>'t</del> wait! Check out the synopsis from Troma:

The urban legend known as 'The Father's Day Killer' began
some years after the demise of serial rapist/murderer Chris Fuchman. Since
the 1970s, the use of contraceptives has tripled in North America alone and
a generation of fathers fell asleep with the covers pulled tight, buttocks
clenched. †The story has become a fire-side cautionary ritual on camping
trips, often used by fathers to warn their sons of the dangers of unplanned
pregnancy. That deep seeded fear of penetration, violation and eventually
death waned as the murder and rape of fathers continued to decline all over
the world. Unfortunately those numbers didn't remain low, and it would seem
that the legend is not yet complete.

Korean Sexy Card Caper Film TAZZA: THE HIGH ROLLERS Coming To The US From 5 Points Pictures!

There is a new home video distributor out there who seems to have the kind of massive cojones it takes to jump into the ever expanding niche home video market. That distributor is 5 Points Pictures (the live-action distribution arm of RightStuf, Inc), who today announced an upcoming 2 disc special edition of 2008 Korean box office smash and dangerously sexy crime film, Tazza: The High Rollers (War of Flowers). This marks the film's debut on American DVD, and 5 Points aren't skimping on the extras either. The press release I got today detailed nearly three hours of supplementary material to go along with this great film, here's what 5 points has to say:

TAZZA: THE HIGH ROLLERS

From the Director of The Thieves and The Big Swindle!

After losing his entire savings in an illegal, backroom card game, Goni (CHO Seung-woo, The Sword With No Name) discovers it was all a set up - he was swindled by professional gamblers. Enraged and desperate, he sets out to get his money back by any means necessary.

Impressed by the young man's determination, veteran gambler Mr. Pyeong (BAEK Yoon-sik, The Taste of Money) takes Goni on as his apprentice and teaches him all there is to know about hwatu , a card game also known as "The War of Flowers."

Now Goni is ready to make his debut in an underworld where the stakes are high and the rules are few: To win, you must be ruthless. The hand must be quicker than the eye. No game is safe. And there are no friends for life, just as there are no enemies for life.

Includes the feature film - plus almost 2 hours and 50 minutes of video extras - all with on/off English subtitles!

Features:
Tazza : Comic vs. Movie, Adaptation of the Comic, The Making of Tazza: The High Rollers , staff and cast interviews, character discussion by the cast and crew, documentary about action sequences, Hwatu Explained, deleted and alternate scenes (with on/off director commentary), promotional footage, plus 5 Points Pictures trailers.

Tazza is set to hit the streets on September 18th.

Also coming up from 5 Points Pictures are a couple of very different Korean features that have no North American distro, the critically acclaimed Moss from 2010, and romantic comedy Finding Mr. Destiny, both in equally stacked editions. Here are more details on Moss, due August 21st:

Moss

A mystery-thriller from KANG Woo-suk, the director of the PUBLIC ENEMY films!

Hae-guk (PARK Hae-il, War of the Arrows) receives word that his estranged father has passed away, so he travels to the remote village where the older man lived to attend the funeral. However, when Hae-guk starts asking questions about his father's life - and unexplained death - the residents and their charismatic Chief (JUNG Jae-young, The Divine Weapon) exchange mysterious looks and seem anxious to rush him out of their village. Something isn't right, and Hae-guk is determined to uncover the truth... at any cost!

Includes the feature film - plus almost 90 minutes of video extras - all with on/off English subtitles!
Features:

"The Making of Moss," "The Beginning of the Story - The Comic Behind the Story," art and set design documentary ("The Birth of the Village"), make-up and effects featurette ("Come Out to the Real World"), poster shoot video, original South Korean teaser and trailer, cast and director bios, and 5 Points Pictures trailers.

And Finding Mr. Destiny, due July 17th:

Finding Mr. Destiny

Looking for your long-lost first love? Call the First Love Agency!

He's fussy, organized, and honest to a fault. When Gi-joon (GONG Yoo, Coffee Prince) is fired from his job, he opens the First Love Agency, a one-man organization dedicated to helping others find their long-lost first loves.

She's independent and feisty. Stage director Ji-woo (LIM Soo-jung, I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK) is dragged to the First Love Agency by her father, who is convinced she won't get married because she isn't over the handsome stranger she met during a long-ago vacation in India.

With a name and the dates of her trip as their only clues, can Gi-joon and Ji-woo work together to find her first love? Or will they discover that destiny has some surprises in store for them?

Includes the feature film and more than 30 minutes of video extras - all with on/off English subtitles!
Features:

"The Making of Finding Mr. Destiny," production video, poster shoot video, "A Second First Love" music video with Gong Yoo, TV commercial, original South Korean trailer, cast and staff bios, Q&A with Director Chang You-jeong, cultural and production notes, and 5 Points Pictures trailers.

So, Korean films fans, it's time to put your money where your mouth is. We bitch and moan about these films not being available, well, here they are. Let's show 5 Points Pictures that they've made a good decision!

As of right now, these three films are only available for pre-order at RightStuf.com, so I'll post that link, but if they become available on Amazon in short order, I'll share those links as well.

In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant's family in his novel "The Wettest County in the World", the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation's most notorious crime wave.

The clips feature a pair of quieter character moments, both of which take great advantage of the physical menace projected by Tom Hardy. Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska and Shia LeBeouf also star.
Two Teasers For Sorkin's THE NEWSROOM

If ever a talent were engineered specifically for the TV minds at HBO I imagine that talent would emerge looking very much like Aaron Sorkin. The creator of The West Wing and writer of David Fincher's The Social Network, Sorkin is simply one of the most gifted writers in the industry - one who seems to effortlessly balance human drama, comedy and larger social matters while demanding that his audiences pay attention if they want to catch all of what is going on. Sorkin has had his successes on network TV, of course, but cable - where he will be far more free to play to his core audience without having to worry about mass appeal and selling ads - should suit him far better.

And so we come to Sorkin's latest creation, The Newsroom, which is due to premiere on HBO on June 24th.

Boasting a stellar cast - Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Dev Patel, Sam Waterston - Sorkin's TV newsroom based effort is looking more than a little bit promising. Check out a pair of teasers below.

Props, artifacts, interviews and freshly restored film prints ... it's everything a Cronenberg fan could possibly hope for:

TIFF CELEBRATES DAVID CRONENBERG WITH NEW EXHIBITION

TIFF's first ever major original touring exhibition launches in Fall 2013

Toronto -- Days away from the hotly anticipated world premiere of David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis at the 65th Cannes Film Festival, Piers Handling, Director and CEO, TIFF and Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox, announced today that TIFF will mount a major exhibition related to the Canadian director, screenwriter and actor. The Cronenberg exhibition, set to launch in Fall 2013 at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, is co-curated by Handling and Cowan and will be accompanied by several additional elements, including a newly commissioned augmented reality game and a dedicated film programme. This marks the first time TIFF has curated an original exhibition of this magnitude, which will be packaged to tour beginning Summer 2014.

"David Cronenberg is one of the world's greatest living filmmakers. He also represents Canadian cinema at its very best. This exhibition underscores our commitment to Canadian film and its legacy, through our 20-year history of working with David to preserve his papers and objects in a special archive, and our efforts to restore and make available his film catalogue," said Handling. Added Cowan: "This is a major milestone for our organization and we can't wait to present our exhibition to film lovers at TIFF Bell Lightbox next fall and to make it available to leading cultural institutions worldwide."

Through the presentation of artifacts, props, documentation and audio-visual interviews, as well as reconstructed set-pieces from Cronenberg's films, the exhibition parallels his growth as a filmmaker with his ongoing examination and interpretation of human evolutionary possibilities, tracing his work from a focus on biological change towards examinations of shifting psychological states. A parallel art project based on the same themes will be announced at a later date.

TIFF will also create an online experience with a multi-platform augmented reality game, The Worlds of David Cronenberg, that will complement and enrich the exhibition using a combination of social media technologies. A dedicated film programme with newly struck 35mm prints and new digital versions of select films will accompany the exhibition.

Additional information on the exhibition, including the title, augmented reality game, film programme, touring destinations and additional initiatives tied to the exhibition, will be available over the coming months.

Having taken a good block of time away from work following Black Swan to focus on being a parent, Portman is at the center of a flurry of activity in Cannes.

The gist of it? Portman has been announced as star and producer of upcoming western Jane Got A Gun, based on the Black List script by Brian Duffield with We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay at the controls. The project is doing the rounds in Cannes with an eye to securing financing and - according to The Hollywood Reporter - there's something of a bidding war brewing.

Ramsay is best know for her social-realist dramas so, while a surprising choice to helm a western she's certainly an intriguing one. And Portman has certainly proven herself proficient with firearms in the past.

Pippi Longstocking Set To Return To The Big Screen In Sweden?

From my childhood there are ever-so-brief memories of watching someone's adaptation of Pippi Longstocking. Television, film and animation versions of Astrid Lindgren's children's books have dotted the entertainment landscape since the late 40s. It had to be one of those.

In some way or another the red-haired firecracker will return to the big screen in Efraim Longstocking and the Cannibal Princess. Efraim is her father and his character was inspired by real life sailor Carl Emil Pettersson. He was shipwrecked near Tabar Island in 1904; an island inhabited by cannibals. Presumably he was deemed unfit for consumption by the locals and married the chief's daughter. Author Jaokim Langer wrote two books based on his story.

The producer Mirijam Johansson will base the film "...on two books by Swedish author Joakim Langer (In Search of Efraim and Pippi Longstocking and the King), a screenplay by Daniel Fridell and Ulf Stark, and approved by Saltkråkan, which holds Lindgren's rights... is currently negotiating with a top US screenwriter who will transfer the books and the endorsed script".

So it remains to be seen how much of the story will be about Pippi. And I do not know what to make of the 'top US screenwriter' endorsement; perhaps there is the hope that it will lead to distribution outside of Sweden? I say you could always use a good rip-roaring family adventure no matter what language it is in.

Ben Wheatley's SIGHTSEERS Grabbed for US by IFC

Ahead of its world premiere today in the Directors' Fortnight section at Cannes, Ben Wheatley's Sightseers has been acquired by IFC Films for distribution in the U.S., according to Indiewire.

Alice Lowe and Steve Oram star in what is being described as a 'dark comedy,' which the clip that's been released would seem to support. Both Down Terrace and Kill List have been bracingly original works, the first leaning more on the funny bone while the latter dipped into strange, violent, unhinged extremes.

I felt that Kill List was one of the best films of the year, so to say I have high hopes for Sightseers is putting it mildly. Here's the official synopsis:

Chris (Steve Oram) wants to show Tina (Alice Lowe) his world and he wants to do it his way - on a journey through this sceptred isle in his beloved Abbey Oxford Caravan. Tina's led a sheltered life and there are things that Chris needs her to see - the Crich Tramway Museum, the Ribblehead Viaduct, the Keswick Pencil Museum and the rolling countryside that separates these wonders in his life. But it doesn't take long for the dream to fade. Litterbugs, noisy teenagers and pre-booked caravan sites, not to mention Tina's meddling mother, soon conspire to shatter Chris's dreams and send him, and anyone who rubs him up the wrong way, over a very jagged edge...

Jiang Wen and Gong Li to Reunite for BULLETS Sequel

Screen Daily is reporting that Mainland Chinese actor Jiang Wen is set to direct and star in Gone With The Bullets, a spiritual sequel to his 2010 smash hit Let The Bullets Fly and that Gong Li is likely to co-star. Marco Ma, who co-owns Beijing-based Buyilehu Films with Jiang, has said the film will again take place in the turbulent 1920s Warlord period, but will be situated in a large city in East China, rather than the South West small town setting of the first film.

Gone With The Bullets will hopefully prove to be the central chapter of a planned Bullets trilogy, in a bid to recapture the enormous success of Let The Bullets Fly, which broke box office records in China to become the country's most successful film of all time (a title later usurped by Zhang Yimou's The Flowers Of War). Ma states that Buyilehu will likely again work with Hong Kong-based Emperor Motion Pictures to produce and distribute the film, which will have a budget considerably higher than its predecessor's, which was somewhere around $20 million.

In addition to reuniting Jiang with his Red Sorghum co-star Li, Gone With The Bullets is also likely to see Ge You return for a second time (although presumably playing a different role), with the production also seeking the services of a prominent US actor to take a role in the film, although Ma was keeping tight-lipped over who has been approached. The script is being written by Jiang and Bullets co-scribe Guo Junli - which is great news - and shooting hopes to start in the Autumn looking towards a late 2013 release date.

THE GREAT GATSBY Trailer: More Luhrmann, Less Fitzgerald

What did you expect from Baz Luhrmann's upcoming version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby? Restraint?

However the finished product turns out -- it's not due for release until the end of 2012 -- the first trailer for the film makes it clear that Luhrmann, the man who never met a scene he didn't want to pack with energy and multiple diversions, is back in full measure. Whatever degree of subtlety that was present in 2008's Australia has been wiped out of mind.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. As Nick Carraway, Tobey Maguire narrates and appears briefly, as does Joel Edgerton and the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. Also, we see resplendent period details, effusive Jazz Age recreations, a speeding car .. and very little quiet and meditation.

Bear in mind that The Great Gatsby will be comin' at ya in 3D. Does this trailer represent everything you've been hoping to see from Luhrmann's take on Fitzgerald?

Animated UTV/Disney Indian Co-production ARJUN: THE WARRIOR PRINCE Opens Friday, Here's The Trailer!

This Friday, May 25th, Disney and UTV are taking another stab at the Indian film market with the 2D CG animated epic, Arjun: The Warrior Prince. The film has been in the works for several years, and I recall seeing promo trailers as much as three years before this release. However, this time the film is actually going out into the world for real.

Regular readers will know that this is not the first Disney production on Indian shores. This is, in fact, the second animated feature, and fifth major feature co-produced by the house of mouse over the last five years. The last animated feature we saw was the charming, though rudimentary, Roadside Romeo, which tanked at the box office in spite of the voice talents of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Unfortunately, apart from the critical success of Do Dooni Chaar, Disney's other forays into the Indian market have all fallen flat as well. Child superhero film, Zokkomon, disappeared quickly from theaters, in spite of its Spy Kids-esque charm, and the Telugu fantasy extravaganza Once Upon A Warrior (Anaganaga O Dheerudu) was a critical and commercial flop that suffered from a serious lack of focus and some poor support for the solid acting of Siddarth in the lead role. Reviews for both can be found in the archive and via links below.

I have pretty high hopes for Arjun, though. The trailer looks quite slick, and I can't see a whole lot of a gap between this and Disney's American cel animated films in terms of quality. I don't know the story, but the film looks pretty breathtaking, and will mark the first time that a quality animated feature from India has debuted simultaneously at home and abroad. Our own Peter Gutierrez caught the film at a preview screening today and will have a review up by the weekend.

The main obstacle I see standing in the way of Arjun's success is the fact that India lacks a domestic market for children's films. The vast majority of successful children's cinema in India is imported, and even then, most children simply go see whatever their parents are seeing. Attempts have been made to jump start this latent market, but to little financial gain. There are really no great success stories involving children's' films in India, which is a shame, but there hasn't been much of a desire, so who can blame them. Nevertheless, Disney seems determined to create the market, and with UTV on their side, they certainly have a decent shot this time around, at least at making some headway.

Arjun: The Warrior Prince opens worldwide on Friday, May 25th.

Kermode Launches Online Film Club with McBride's BREATHLESS

Renowned British film critic Mark Kermode today launches an intriguing new online film club concept on his blog over at the BBC's website. Inspired by questions about the relevance of film festivals for the general public and the dying art of film introductions, Kermode endeavours to re-introduce a little bit of community into the film-watching experience in these days of home cinema. He will choose a film and then record a video introduction for participants to watch before they enjoy their own private screening. He then invites his audience to share their thoughts on his blog to feed a future discussion.

For the inaugural film, Kermode's choice is predictably off-kilter: Jim McBride's 1983 re-make of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, starring Richard Gere and Valerie Kaprisky. It is a film I remember Quentin Tarantino being very enthusiastic about back in the mid-nineties, specifically for its use of rear projection and ruminations on Marvel's Silver Surfer. I sought it out and thoroughly enjoyed it..and now, years later, I shall give it a second viewing thanks to the virtual prodding of Dr. Kermode.

For those interested, Kermode's introduction to Breathless - which includes a brief outline of his intentions for the Kermode Uncut Film Club - can be found below. While I don't intend to publish each of his introductions when they appear (it doesn't seem like there is any outlined schedule or future programme arranged as yet), I will be playing along as I for one do miss the days when interesting cult films were screened on late night television with insightful prologues from the likes of Alex Cox and Mark Cousins. I felt the least I could do was bring this applaudable new venture to your attention.

Cannes 2012: Weinsteins Show Off DJANGO UNCHAINED, THE MASTER, & THE SILVER LINING PLAYBOOK

"The D is silent." -Jamie Foxx in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.

That catchphrase lit up the twittershpere as journalists streamed out of the Weinstein Company's show and tell Monday evening in Cannes. Harvey was on hand to present just over four minutes of Paul Thomas Anderson's THE MASTER, three minutes of David O. Russell's THE SILVER LINING PLAYBOOK, and a whopping seven minutes plus from Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED. Each sizzle reel was cut like a trailer and all three films look really, really promising. If you are the kind of person that wants to stay completely in the dark, then you should probably stop reading this now. I hesitate to call anything beyond a spoiler, but you should be able to get an idea of what was shown.

THE MASTER

Shown just a few hours after the internet was treated to the film's first teaser, the assembled journalists were buzzing about whether we'd see the same minute and a half or something more substantial. The footage started with the same Joaquin Phoenix dialog but with a different cut of the visuals. It then went on to a much more substantial trailer that featured both Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams extensively. Adams looks like she will particularly shine as what would appear to be the wife of Hoffman's character; the two of them working to "fix" Phoenix's disturbed WW2 vet. Production design was at the forefront in a film that looks highly stylized to its late 1940s/1950s setting. The film will be released on October 12th in the US.

THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

The least was known about David O. Russell's upcoming romantic comedy before Harvey unspooled his three minute trailer (the shortest of the three). Adapted by Russell from a novel by Matthew Quick, the film stars Bradley Cooper as what would seem to be a mentally unstable Philadelphia man trying to reconnect with an old love and finding Jennifer Lawrence instead. Lawrence stole the trailer but there were some good lines delivered all around. Robert De Niro, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, and John Ortiz (who Luck fans may know as Escalante) all make appearances as well. This crowd pleaser is set for release on Thanksgiving in the US (Nov. 21).

DJANGO UNCHAINED

The anticipation in the crowd was palpable as the first shots of Quentin Tarantino's slavery era epic hit the screen. Many journalists didn't even attempt to hold back their whoops of joy as Christoph Waltz's Dr. King Shultz pulled his horse Fritz to a stop alongside a line of slaves, a giant tooth comically bobbing atop his wagon. The seven plus minutes of footage was filled with plenty of gun slinging, blood drawing, and a whole lot of Tarantino humor. There was quite a bit of plot revealed as well , focusing on Waltz's freeing of Jamie Foxx Django and the manhunt the two undertake from there. This eventually leads them to Don Johnson's plantation, though Leonardo DiCaprio works his way in there as well. What was pretty obvious from the footage is that Waltz is front and center, there's a kickin' 70s soul soundtrack, and fans of QT will not be disappointed. It sounds like we'll have to wait until Christmas Day (Dec. 25th) to see much more than this; a wait that for most journalists there today, will now be excruciating!

THE WALKING DEAD Season 3 Behind The Scenes Pt1

Last season AMC's The Walking Dead really pulled a hat trick, wrapping up a lot of loose ends, ramping up the action, and making some serious ballsy moves as far as who lives and who dies. The series got viewers believing once again that no one is truly safe.

Season 3 promises to be the payoff a lot of fans have been waiting for. With the drama behind the firing of Frank Darabont, and complaints that the show was too "talky" from some factions, the support of the fanbase seemed a bit "iffy" for awhile there. Then the second half of season 2 hit, and things really started picking up action-wise and the characters had something to do other than worry.

The farm was finally overrun directly after the deaths of Dale and Shane, and it looks like Rick has finally grown a pair. I had been referring to the show as Lawn Of the Dead for a couple of months, thankfully I have been able to retire that phrase. Fans of the comic series, like myself, know that the last shots of the season 2 finale reveal that some BIG things are about to happen. We get a glimpse of the female warrior Michonne (to be played by the beautiful Danai Gurira, seen as Jill on the HBO series Treme) in all her samurai sword wielding glory, and as the camera pans up we see the Woodbury Prison. It's basically the "Monroeville Mall" of The Walking Dead, and figures heavily into the comic. cast, characters, and viewers can all plan on being there for awhile. Settle in, things look about to get really good.

Will Michael Rooker be returning this season? Will the comic character The Governor show up? Will T-Dog get to do more than bleed this season?

We'll see. For now check out the first behind the scenes vid from the set of The Walking Dead Season 3. Also, beneath the making of video, you can see yours truly chopping it up about the show with star Norman Reedus at ZomBcon Seattle last year, along with my pal, fellow Fangoria writer Thom Carnell.

You can also listen to/download commentaries for the the final episodes of season 2 HERE at The Night Crew page. Film maker Phil Mucci, renowned horror author John Skipp, and myself provide insight and bad taste for your listening (dis)pleasure. Simply download the mp3 and synch to the episodes on your TivO or mobile viewing device.

When season 3 begins airing, you can look here for The Walking Dead episode by episode breakdowns and updates by yours truly here at Twitch as well. We will also continue at The Night Crew with full commentaries, and have a nice slate of celebrity co-hosts to come on and shake things up with us.

Teaser For Paul Thomas Anderson's Highly Anticipated THE MASTER Arrives

It's been 5 long years since P.T. Anderson's last triumph, with the expansive and challenging There Will Be Blood. Now, on Oct. 12 the Weinstein Company will release Anderson's latest film, The Master.

A period piece set in the 1950's, and Starring Joaquin Phoenix as a troubled sailor who falls in with a burgeoning religious leader, played by P.T. Anderson stock player Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master is reported to be about on the rise of Scientology-like "religion", with Hoffman playing an intellectually minded, charismatic leader obviously based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

This teaser clip is all Joaquin though, as he is questioned by a superior officer, about a dalliance he has no memory of. Tense, intimate, and uncomfortable, this is pure P.T. Anderson. Let Oct. 12 give you movie going readers a respite from flying men and metallic monsters, I think it's time for the grown-ups to have the pool to themselves for a bit. The Master looks more accessible than There Will be Blood, and personally I count Boogie Nights and Magnolia among the greats of American film, so for all intents and purposes The Master looks like a sure bet. I won't even try to contain my excitement...if this movie isn't amazing I will pull a Herzog and eat my shoe.

Now, click the link below and watch Joaquin own it!

Blu-ray News: BOND50 Set Announced! 23 Discs of Her Majesty's Favourite Spy

We don't usually get too excited about home media press releases around here, but this is a set that has been anticipated for a very long time. Plus, they tied the official announcement just in time for those of us who live in places that celebrate Victoria Day, as today we can commemorate the films about our current Queen's personal (and, alas, fictional) weapon of mass destruction, 007.

Tied to the release of Skyfall (of course) and made public as part of a splashy announcement made during Cannes, they've finally announced the full set of all 22 (!) Bond films on Blu-Ray shinydisc.

Long time Blu-Ray collectors will be familiar with the three "best of" sets that were previously available. This will be the first set ever that that includes every film from 1962's Dr. No through to the most recent Daniel Craig iteration, Quantum of Solace. As you can see below, each disc includes numerous supplementary materials, and a bonus disc (23'rd in the set!) with a slew vintage and contemporary documentaries, including the brand new Being Bond, which looks particularly fun. For the doc they tracked down all the bonds, and they get to share stories about playing this iconic character.

There was much consternation with the original releases that Lowry did too much scrubbing of the original image for the transition to HD for the vintage films, so hopefully these new transfers are more representative of the original image, and not just waxy faced simulacra fit for fans of video games and 3D animated films.

The press release is listed below, with specific details about the hours and hour of material to be found on this massive set.

All the Bonds. All the girls. All the action. All in
high-definition. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Twentieth Century Fox
Home Entertainment mark James Bond's monumental golden anniversary with
the release of BOND 50, the complete Bond experience
showcasing all 22 classic films on Blu-ray together for the first time
ever, neatly packaged into one cool, sleek collectable box-set. The
collection will be available beginning September 24 in the United
Kingdom and September 25 in North America with additional international
markets to follow that week. BOND 50 marks the debut of nine
James Bond films previously unavailable in high definition Blu-ray and
comes with a dossier of more than 122 hours of bonus features.

Set for release just prior to the theatrical premiere of SKYFALL, BOND 50 will offer a look at the latest Bond film through videoblogs shot with the cast and crew. The BOND 50
collection also provides two all-new pieces that spotlight the history
of 007. "The World of Bond" takes a look at the style and attitude that
is signature to Bond; pulling together the cars, the women, the
villains and the music that have been a staple of these films for the
past 50 years. "Being Bond" profiles the six distinguished actors that
have had the honor of portraying 007.

Additional bonus content in the BOND 50 collection includes
cast and crew commentaries, the behind-the-scenes making of each film,
in-depth interviews with every actor that played Bond, a closer look at
the exotic locations as shot on-the-set, the women of Bond, the villains
of Bond, Bond's cars and gadgets, music videos and much, much more!

Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan,

Bond Plays Word Games & Kills People in First SKYFALL Teaser!

It doesn't really matter that Ridley Scott is releasing a prequel to his own insanely influential science fiction opus Alien next month, or that Christopher Nolan will be wrapping up his Batman trilogy a few weeks later. There is a new James Bond film on the horizon...and nobody does it better!

With British director Sam Mendes at the helm, Daniel Craig slipping into the tuxedo for the third time, as well as hopefully some hot totty in the form of Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris, and Javier Bardem looking for world domination, the stars are aligning for a potentially fabulous entry into the Bond series.

Skyfall also stars Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw and begins hitting screens in Europe at the end of October. Sony Pictures have just unleashed the first teaser trailer for the 23rd Bond film and I'm already so excited I can hardly type this post properly. It's shaken not stirred, it's 007, it's Her Majesty's finest secret agent - you know the drill. Here goes:

Video Home Invasion: Introducing MONDO MACABRO!!

Welcome to a long overdue new series from Twitch's Video Home Invasion!

I have no really good reason for taking so long between columns. I will only tell you that between reviewing home video releases almost every day, keeping up with Indian film festivals all over the world, and my regular home life, it can be a bit tough to squeeze in this kind of project. However, I do it because I love it, and you guys seem to enjoy it as well. If you're the type who really enjoys finding the best and weirdest that independent home video has to offer, you'll want to strap in, because this time around, we're going after the Granddaddy of all cult video labels, Mondo Macabro!

If there was any label that I had in mind when I pitched this column, it was Mondo Macabro. No other home video label in the world has such a remarkably diverse catalog. So many of their titles could easily have been lost to the passage of time, but have been snatched from the jaws of obscurity and given a spotlight in which to bask. Just about every major film industry in the world is represented in their catalog, along with some crazy industries you probably didn't even know existed. Mondo Macabro truly are the gold standard by which cult home video must be measured.

I asked co-founder, Pete Tombs, about the history of the label a while ago, and this is what he had to say:

I guess that goes a long way back. Probably to the time when I was a kid and used to collect these little 8mm cut down reels of films and dream of having my own library of titles to watch whenever I wanted. So I guess video was a sort of dream come true when it finally arrived. It liberated our viewing habits, opened up a whole world of possibilities and gave us the roots of a developing new perspective on film history.

Through collecting oddball movies on VHS, I met Cathal Tohill. Back in the early 90s, we collaborated on a book called Immoral Tales that was a look at Euro sex/horror movies from the early 60's through to the mid 80s. The book included the first English language in depth looks at the likes of Jess Franco, Jean Rollin, Jose Larraz etc. The book was published by Titan Books in the UK and St Martin's Press in the US. It had been quite a struggle to find a lot of the films we wrote about in the book. There was a sort if underground network of collectors and traders that were invaluable to us, people who had access to obscure films that had been released on VHS in Greece or Argentina. At about the time the book came out there was a mini revival of interest in the kinds of films we were writing about and some started to appear on legitimate video releases. Together with Peter Salvage who had been one of the founders of the Redemption video label in the UK I started up Pagan Films. I'm quite proud of what we did with Pagan. We were the first company, for example, to release some of the Nikkatsu erotic movies in English subtitled versions - films like Seijun Suzuki's Gate of Flesh and Noboru Tanaka's Watcher in the Attic.

At this point I'd like to interject, only to profess my undying love for the work that Tombs and Tohill did with Immoral Tales. The book in an indispensable reference for anyone with even a passing interest in European horror and genre film during the aforementioned era. To call it comprehensive is to wildly understate the case. Unfortunately, the book is how out of print in the US, but I highly recommend tracking it down if at all possible, I'll throw in a couple of links at the end of this column to help you. Anyway, back to Pete...

A TV company had expressed interest in acquiring some of the films we released. Andy Starke, who at the time was working in various post production roles in the TV industry, came up with the idea of doing a series of documentaries to accompany the films and UK Channel 4 agreed to commission a series called Eurotika! This was a 12 part look at the general area of what used to be called "Euro Cult" cinema. Through doing the TV shows we got to meet a lot of the actors, directors, and rights owners behind the films.

Throughout this period I was also working on the book Mondo Macabro. This had come about when Paul Woods, a friend of mine in the publishing world, had asked me to look at the possibility of writing a book on Japanese horror films. This was several years before Ringu and its sequels helped to create the boom in "J Horror". Although I'd been to Japan and had seen lots of the classic (and not so classic) genre movies, I was doubtful as to whether I could really write enough to sustain a full book. I began to cast around and see whether I could do something like Immoral Tales - that's to say, a country by country study of, generally, exploitation movies. In the parts of London where I'd grown up there had been cinemas showing Indian films, Turkish films and martial arts films from Hong Kong so I was aware of there being genre productions from all those countries.Originally I started with the idea of restricting it to Asian countries, but soon cast my net wider. I begin to compile a list and came up with the twelve or so territories that formed the final book.

Again we were lucky enough to get a TV commission to turn this into a series for Channel 4. We were able to travel to a lot of the countries featured and got to know the producers, actors and directors who'd made the films. At the time I was still quite busy with the Pagan and Eurotika video releases, so when Andy suggested the idea of starting up a Mondo Macabro DVD label, I was not so sure. I wasn't convinced there was a big enough market in the UK for such esoterica. Finally I was persuaded that if we distributed in the US as well, we might find a large enough market. And so our first DVD was released there in 2002, a couple of years after we had started in the UK.

This is an interesting place to interject as well. Many of the episodes of Tombs' Mondo Macabro TV series appear as extra material on Mondo Macabro DVDs, and they are fascinating. The Jean Rollin episode of Eurotika! appears as an extra on one of Kino's recent Redemption/Rollin Blu-rays. So, these very valuable mini-documentaries are becoming available little by little.

I also asked Pete some fairly basic questions, I'll admit to not being much of an interviewer, and here are the responses he gave me.

Where do you find these films?

Coming up with a list of titles was (in the early days, anyway) relatively easy. But finding out who owned those titles, let alone who had materials for them, was a lot harder. With Silip, for example, I think it took nearly six years to finally sort! Now it's lot tougher for a whole raft of reasons. For one thing, so much stuff has already been released, both legitimately and via the "grey" market that it's increasingly hard to find anything that isn't already out there in some form or another. But we've still got a pretty long list.

How did you first become interested in south and south east Asian horror/exploitation?

I was lucky to have grown up in the UK at a time when the BBC still showed seasons of world cinema. I saw many of the classic Japanese, Indian - and even Filipino - films on UK TV, believe it or not. Along with Brazilian Cinema Novo, Italian Neo Realism and French New Wave movies. I guess that helped make me aware that there were interesting films that weren't made in the US or the UK. In the cinemas, mostly in what's now called "grind houses" (in the UK we call them "flea pit" cinemas), I saw the likes of the Baby Cart movies, Japanese monster movies, oddball Hong Kong horrors and martial arts movies, the Blood Island films of Eddie Romero etc etc.

I think a big influence on all of us was the arrival of the Phil Hardy Aurum Encyclopaedias which for the first time really, had relatively in depth coverage of world exploitation movies, including those from India and the Philippines. I also have to big up what for me was an essential and groundbreaking book, Barrie Pattison's Seal of Dracula.

How do you decide what to release?

It's whatever we like, basically. Mondo Macabro is more of a hard-to-define essence or flavour. When I was a music fan I was always attracted to labels like Elektra and Island, where you could more or less blind buy and know you would probably like it. We hope that Mondo is something similar, in a much smaller way, of course.

How hard is it to source prints/transfers for some of the more obscure or frequently cut titles?

A good question. And I guess the answer is - it depends. In some countries, producers look after their films, keeping the negs in climate safe vaults etc. But in poorer, developing world countries those facilities are either expensive or not available. In the Philippines and Indonesia, for example, negatives or even decent prints of many films are no longer available due to storage problems. The further back you go, the worse it gets. In the 60s, 70s and even the 80s, producers were after a fast buck and didn't really consider their films to be worth much after their initial theatrical runs, particularly if those films didn't make money. So negs and prints were often junked wholesale. This certainly happened in Turkey as we were told a number of times.

Occasionally materials do turn up for films that were otherwise thought to be lost. But it's an increasingly rare event. Often, what you are offered is an old analog video master or a very cheaply transferred 4:3 widescreen (if you're lucky) digibeta. We also still get offered one inch masters, which must be at least 20 years old now. If, after much negotiation, the producer actually manages to turn up a negative and (even rarer) it turns out to be usable, the chances of getting them to ship it to the UK are slim. So often you have to find labs in the countries of production and trust them to do the work to the standard required, Not infrequently we have to get them to do it two or even three times to get it right, as it's not usually possible to us to go and watch it being done. So, it can be a bit of a slog. But usually we get there and I think most of our releases have decent to good transfers, given the obscurity of the films. To be fair, though, I have to say that European producers are often just as bad as those from developing countries in terms of not looking after their films, or not seeing the point of preparing decent masters for them.

In this series we will be digging deep into the Mondo Macabro catalog, taking a cinematic trip (in more ways than one) around the world. As I mentioned above, one thing that sets Mondo Macabro apart from all of the other major video labels in the world is the sheer variety of their titles. Because of that, I've decided to split the catalog up by region. We'll have a section on Latin American films, one on South Asian films, East Asian, and, of course, Euro-horror. I'll definitely try to cram as much in as I can.

One of the things that Pete said in this little interview rang perfectly true to me, and that is the blind trust that buyers have in Mondo Macabro. I feel very certain that whatever they release, it'll will be entertaining to me in some way, and I have never felt cheated by a Mondo Macabro release. If you have any questions for Pete Tombs, you can either send them to be at the link below, or leave them in the comments, and I'll be sure to pass them along. Please don't just ask about acquisitions, those questions are complicated and boring. However, if you can come up with something interesting, please feel free to share.

I've been talking with Mondo Macabro's new distributor Danger After Dark, and they've also showed some interest in holding giveaways for Twitch readers, which is something I'm really looking forward to!

Tune in next week when we head south of the US border for a look at Latin American horror and genre films from Mondo Macabro!

Little's live action fighting video game film Tekken will get a prequel under the titled Tekken: Rise of the Tournament and director Prachya Pinkaew of Ong Bak fame will helm the project. With his experiences within the martial arts genre, it would seem he's the right man for the job. Depending how you look at this collaboration, it may be an utter disaster waiting to happen or a match made in heaven.

There is no cast attached as of yet but Crystal Sky aims to find actors who appear like the characters in the game rather than casting A-list stars. Who knows, maybe with his connection, Pinkaew can roped in Tony Jaa or Jeeja Yanin for a part and have Panna Rittikrai choreograph the fights.

The production company is planning for a theatrical release in North America. However, no distribution deal has been placed nor a release date has been set.
