Initial Thoughts on J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK

by Rodney Perkins, April 7, 2009 12:51 PM

A full, mostly spoiler-free review is now available. Check below for the link

A heavily advertised free screening of Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan on Monday, March 6th at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas turned out to be the well-disguised world premiere of J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek movie. Leonard Nimoy, as well as three of the film's screenwriters, introduced the screening, which ended before the publicly announced Australian premiere even started.

A full Twitch review will appear in the near future but it is safe to say that Abrams' film is a very entertaining and reverential take on the Star Trek mythos. The acting and casting are spot on. The story mixes old and new elements of the Star Trek universe. The effects are breathtaking. Some people will inevitably nitpick this film but J.J. Abrams' new work is as good as (and arguably better than) most of the Star Trek movies that preceded it.

That's good to hear but there will be whining for sure. It's inevitable

That is a pretty smooth way of having a World Premiere.

I guess I'm alone in fan-boy world as one of the few who thinks the concept behind STTMPicture was infinitely more interesting than WOKahn, and more in line with speculative fiction, instead of just some futuristic Showdown at OK Corral.
Kahn was exciting, but mostly predictable (aside from the loss at the end).

The execution of STTMPicture was clunky, but the ideas behind it were amazing to me as a child (I was 9 when it came out), who was already in love with the idea of UFOs and Robots and Artificial Intelligence. When I get a Star Trek jones, the first one is the movie I always put in, and rarely Kahn.

I'm looking forward to this one, but it's pretty obvious now that this reboot is more in the vein of the Kahn movie, which probably means it won't merit many repeat views in my house, unfortunately.
But I bet it'll be fun!

I usually don't go watch movies on opening day here in the states but since this is a science fiction movie I'll be damn sure and positive that there won't be any baby mamas with their fake hair weave and spoiled little kids ruining this experience...

Agreed with Sonaboy. This remake looks like a lot of fun, but I really don't get the hardcore love for Kahn. All of the reviews on aintitcool make Kahn out to be some type of infallable masterpiece that's nearly impossible to surpass... Ummm, really?

Sometimes fanboy culture completley alludes me. Kahn is entertaining, I love all of the sceneary chewing. It is a damn fine B grade space western. But it's pretty silly and simple. Star Trek is often unintentionally silly & campy, but the series almost always strived to deal with some heavy shit.

All the aintitcool people are always whinning about how stupid, generic, and convulted modern sci-fi films are, that all of today's tentpole films are purely spectacle. And yet, Kahn is the holy grail of Star Trek for all of these people? Yeah, the first Star Trek is a bit dull but it has a lot more on its mind than Kahn.

If anything, Kahn is almost like a Michael Bay Star Trek film. Yeah, I said it.

Then you have my apologies.

Also, I reread my earlier post and I was completely unnecessarily insulting, for which I apologise. I should probably be banned from posting things online while drunk.

he, no problem. as an uninformed viewer of the trailer it looks for me to be populated by 18-22 year olds, so teen wasn't the right word, I agree, but they sure did look very young to me compared with the agegroup of the old series or even the old movies. nice of you to post this, it's rare in the internets :)
