TROPIC THUNDER 2 DISC DIRECTORS CUT

by Canfield, November 25, 2008 12:20 AM

Stuff never blowed up this funny before. Tropic Thunder is so dumb it’s brilliant, deconstructing Hollywood politics, American audience expectations and everyones desire to be a star! This movie does suffer from being a little out of touch with the average persons ideas about funny. The constant stream of simplistic vulgarity comes across as strained more often than not and doesn’t really work as satire nor does it add to the belly laugh quotient particularly in the unrated version which only offers one or two improvements on the original. But there are belly laughs aplenty and nobody is wasted here. For once you get exactly what you’d expect out of a great cast instead of wondering what could have been. And the subplot involving Tom Cruise as a domineering producer would be a stand out except for the fact that every single person and almost all the scenes bring what this movie needs right to the table. There are moments that look every bit as big and expensive as a real action film but the film never loses sight of the intimacy ensemble comedy like this thrives on.

The extras on this thing had me howling even harder than the film. 2 commentaries including one in which Robert Downey jr. talks in character, a fake documentary on the tragic story behind the making of the fiLm within the film, a complete series of featurettes on the making of, an alternate ending and a series of (for once) really enlightening deleted and extended scenes that show these gifted performers shaping the material. There’s a lot of other stuff too all of it enjoyable. Stiller in my mind is proving to be as much of a national treasure as his old man.

I found it absolutely hilarious. Had its flaws, but definitely one of the funniest films I've wotched this year.

agreed, not very funny at all. what a waste of a stellar cast. pineapple express, on the other hand, i expected to be terrible and laughed a lot at.
