
Legend has it that early in his career, Steven Spielberg pursued the job of directing a James Bond movie. That of course never happened, but he did get to bring another dashing adventurer, Indiana Jones, to the screen - a much greater accomplishment in retrospect. With his latest film, “Munich”, Spielberg gets to once again indulge his 007 wish, but this time in a very different and most unlikely way. It is the story of a band of covert Israeli government assassins out to exact revenge upon the killers of their country’s eleven athletes in 1972 at the infamous Munich Olympic Games.
These assassins, led by Avner, played by Eric Bana (“Hulk”) and including future Bond Daniel Craig as Steve, hit on just about every spy movie convention throughout the course of their dark mission – they get briefed, travel the globe, meet femme fatales, kill a lot of people, get into chases, and even use lethal gadgets courtesy of the token gadget-man teammate. But this time there is a twist – this time, it’s all real world, to the point that the film is “Inspired by true events” (and based upon the book “Vengeance” by George Jonas). In other words, the chases are sloppy, and makeshift gadgets kill indiscriminately, leaving behind pools of blood and mangled body parts. The targets have human faces, foibles, and families, making the assigned killing that much more of conscious struggle for those who haven’t managed to completely harden and suppress their emotions in the name of nationalism. Even the cold, flawed Bond of Ian Fleming never went to this place.
Spielberg is indeed in his “serious” mode, and even generating some controversy with “Munich”. Warranted or not, the film works not only as a realistic assassination tale and a political allegory for today’s world, but also as perhaps the most definitively “Spielberg” film in years.
The controversy surrounding “Munich” is not something I’m qualified to analyze, in terms of the ages-old Israel/Palestinian conflict, or where Spielberg stands on the issue. I will say that the director is clearly more interested in exploring the personal and sociological costs of revenge in this film rather than breaking down who’s right and who’s wrong in their longstanding turf war. Apparently Spielberg’s Jewishness has come under attack with claims that he’s “switched sides” since “Schindler’s List”. While I doubt that extreme accusation to be true, those well versed in his filmography are quite aware of the fact that his strongest work suggests a specific worldview that has at times been labeled as something outside his heritage. Over and over, whether intentional or not, he tells stories demonstrating that people are wholly incapable of making it on their own. This is a viewpoint resembling reformed Christianity when paired with his sometimes-messianic imagery, and could no doubt be linked to other viewpoints as well when presented in other forms. What this means for Spielberg the man; I have no idea, but in the context of Spielberg the artist, let’s look at the facts...
Spielberg’s strongest and most pronounced films could be separated into two different outcome groups. The first group features heroes struggling all the while to do right, only to be eventually overcome, but then bailed out in the eleventh hour by supernatural means. This group includes the Indiana Jones films, “E.T.”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, and “War of the Worlds”, among others.
The second group is films in which the outcomes may be ultimately positive, but the victories are wanting at best, often leaving the protagonists lonely, frustrated, and even irrevocably hardened or crushed by the experience. This group includes “Schindler’s List”, “Saving Private Ryan”, “Jurassic Park”, “Jaws”, and even his first film, “Duel”.
What sets “Munich” apart, but also makes it definite Spielberg, is how it utilizes both categories. The label of “Spielbergian” is often packed with negative allegations, including those of being too saccharine, too sentimental, too glossy, and too fanciful. While justified in the past, these allegations are certainly not the case here. In this case, the characters of “Munich” exist knowingly in the second category for the very reason of not allowing the first as a possibility. Other recent Spielberg films have at times danced into both categories, including “A.I.” and “Minority Report”, but never in a way as thorough as this.
Just following the assassinations of the athletes (all killed essentially off-screen in the opening minutes of the film), Israel’s leadership decides they’re sick of being pushed around, and are not going to sit idly by this time. The team is assembled and put into action, and before long the very bloody body count begins to tally up high. In the course of all of this, yes, the Palestinian targets are often allowed more human depictions than the Israeli athletes ever had a chance at, but that’s not at the heart of the matter. What is at the heart of “Munich” is the nature of killing. How killing begets more killing. The messy and disturbing physicality of killing. And that killing is a dirty business, giving way to paranoia, detachment, and isolation. Late in the film, one character tells another that the Jews were a people who were supposed to trust God in these matters, and by not doing so, by taking matters into their own hands, they’ve only intensified the problem. This morbid spiritual commentary places “Munich” as Spielberg’s most authentically postmodern film, a classification he seems to have been striving to achieve for years, but never fully attained until now.
Despite the films nearly three hour running time, it never drags. The political intrigue and situation demand a slight degree of understanding prior to viewing, but this is not nearly as obscure as Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun”. The direction is economical, taut, and at times clever. The performances are all-around solid, with Bana at long last given the chance to truly prove his acting chops. Daniel Craig is memorable as the iciest killer of team, thus building anticipation for his turn as James Bond, and hope that the creators of that series will allow for a depiction of the ruthless Fleming characterization, in keeping with the actor’s demonstrated strong points. The art department’s task of recreating Europe and various middle-eastern countries as they were in 1972 is not a task I envy, but they did an excellent job of it, never betraying the fact that this was only shot mere months ago. It is perhaps due to the film’s well-known post-production time crunch that John Williams’ score is so sparse, but the music is effective nonetheless in its sparseness.
This is a very violent film with a high body count. The killings are graphic and often brutal, sometimes even demeaning. Perhaps most surprising element in all of this is the blatant commentary Spielberg makes late in the film, linking the primal act of murder with sexual climax while at the same time keeping it personally relevant for the characters in question. The political allegory is subtle yet obvious at the very end, as Spielberg could be accused of copping the film’s final image from another semi-recent film also built upon a similar foundation. (I’ll not reveal the film in order to avoid the direct spoiler, but feel free to guess.) Whether you agree with the underlying point of the film or not, you will still be struck nonetheless by some its many other observed truths and observations made along the way.
It’s not fair to 1982’s “E.T.” to imply it a lesser film by stating that our boy Steven has officially grown up since then, but “Munich” is clearly the work of a matured and sure-handed artist; one bold with opinion, voice, and undeniable skill. Spielberg may be searching and questioning our world, unable to find easy answers this time out, but he never loses sight of the importance of “home”, a vital re-occurring theme of “Munich”. With that in mind, we can ponder the film’s deep issues while knowing that sooner than later, he’ll no doubt be back in his fantastical filmmaking comfort zone now that he’s appeased his increasingly vital “serious” side. The beauty of it is, in either storytelling mode; his singular worldview is on display. Golden Globe snub aside, “Munich” should be given a shot at the gold at Oscar time.

Oh God here we go again with another Liberal "Message" film. Between this one and Brokeback Cowboy Hollyweird is doing their darndest to convince us we're all a bunch of barbarians.
The Israelis are the moral equivalent of Islamic Fascists and they were unjustified in tracking down the knuckle-dragging car-swarmers that murdered their atheletes in 1972.

Very good review. I disagree with the 'never drags' contention (there was a bit of a rinse, assasinate, repeat vibe by the third hour), but this isn't a major fault in the film. Just finished the book by George Jonas, good read.
this film was amazing... set aside your political views for a few hours and watch this movie as a study in revenge.
Note the reference to Hegelian philosophy as referenced in the scene when Avner was seeking names from a German woman. It would seem that philosophical issues are at the core of Kushner's script mainly social consciousness in conflict with the individual's personal leanings. How love plays an important role in humanizing an individual's political perspective is another theme and can be linked with Hegel's philosophies. Perhaps, one should interpret Munich only on philosophical grounds, rather than political aand idealogical ones. Kushner's and Spielberg's intention is clear...a course in Hegel's philosophy is necessary here to an understanding of the film... history, determinism, dialecticism, Spirit, emotional consciousness...all essential to the film's "meaning."

Don't assume that Debbie's "facts" as she has presented them are in fact correct. Do your real homework and you'll find that she has indeed distorted and misrespresented the truth about numerous things, including some of the central policies she is saying are in place.
That you take this poistion though does to me at least support why this movie is so displeasing - there is no easy way to take a side with the politics, morality, ethics of it. You are wrong in any assertion this is typical Hollywood left however it would never be made like this if Hollywood weren't. This is in fact neither left nor right, and Spielberg is clearly a man in need of baring the conflicts he has in his soul around his identity as a Jew and his opinions and connections with Israel. In this way I agree with some of Debbie's points - not her "facts" as she states them, but her observations that the situation is complex. That little country in the midst of 17 enemy countries has no choice but to fight for their survival on both fronts, in both ways... something we as American's are finding out about for ourselves as we are mixing up with now in our own fights on both fronts, in both ways.

The movie wasn't about the athletes, the movie was about the assassins that took revenge for the massacre. The massacre was portrayed in a type of fast-forward fashion to lay background for the story of Vengeance. I think you're forgetting in your pointed attack on Spielberg that he did give us deep background on Abner's family and cute daughter.
The hero of our story is Abner - not the terrorists. Abner, an Isreali, is portrayed as a man with high moral, ethical, and family values that examines his personal ethics and is by no means a terrorist.
If you want to make fun of spielberg try being objective, explain why Abner's boss in the mossad wouldn't break bread with him. That went right over my head.
It was a great movie and Speilberg should make his next movie about the Special Forces teams that are hunting down Osama Bin Laden. When they find him, I hope they shoot to kill.
"BarnyRubble's" endless drivel painting angelic Israelis going to "great pains" to avoid "killing innocents" confirms why the world should rejoice over the debut of Speilberg's "Munich". For too long, Hollywood has presented propaganda atrocities, such as "Exodus" and "Cast a Giant Shadow", portraying a grotesquely one-dimensional version of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict--that is, that the Palestinians were the sole terrorists.
The historical record exposes the true reality. That the Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their homeland in 1948, and the Israelis (take your pick of terrorists....Begin, Shamir, Sharon, etc.) in fact took "great pains" to let the slaughtered women and children fall where they may, in their drive to keep the the Palestinian nation crushed, and the pursuit of Greater Israel.
Ol' Barny, like the rest of the right-wing world, wants us to believe otherwise, and it really rankles him that Speilberg has exposed the fact that, as one of the lines "Munich" goes: "The Palestinians didn't invent bloodshed". No indeed. Just read the details on the Deir Yassin Massacre, where over a 100 men, women, and children were butchered (Begin's terror group exaggerated the toll, to cause greater panic).
Terrorism of any kind, whether through a small group, like Black September or the Stern Gang, is obviously deplorable. Too many people, however, rarely connect the dots that make up official government terrorism, something Israelis, as well as governments throughout the world have (and continue to) practiced with often every bit the ruthlessness and savagry.
A couple of summers ago, in pursuit of a Hamas terrorist in Gaza, the Israelis discovered him in an apartment building, filled with men, women, and children. They killed the terrorist, alright, with a great big bomb, dropped on that very apartment building, murdering approximately 100 othere human beings.
Terrorism is a two-way highway to hell, Barny Boy.

Well, sounds like a good movie to me and going to see it in a half hour...will post what I think.

Whether you agree with the politics of the movie or not seems, by and large, irrelevent. At the end of the day, the Mossad, the CIA, the Palestinian Authority, Al Qaeda, and any other terrorist organization or foreign intelligence service will continue to operate. What the movie should be applauded for is opening up discursive space wherein people actually talk about the political, ethical, and psychological underpinnings of the events that the movie depicts. Perpetually waving the bloody shirt on one side or the other is akin to preaching to the choir. You won't woo any moderate thinkers to your court regardless, so all the drivel in the world won't amount to a hill of beans.
That aside, I am curious as to what the closing scene where the sexual climax of Abner and his wife had to do with the execution of all the terrorists. I imagine there is some metaphor comparing the male sexual dominance and the psychosexual tensions that drive violence, but I think that this is a little heady for Spielberg, any thoughts?
Just saw Munich on New Years eve and really enjoyed the picture. I’m not going to bore you with recapping the storyline. I just want to thank Steven for illuminating the subject of the Arab & Jewish conflict.. The cast was incredible, Eric Bana was brilliant. The most scorching scene was the killing of the female assassin. Munich, by far, is the best film I have seen since the original Godfather. It was beautifully terrifying.
I saw Munich last week. It is a very well-made movie and Spielberg deserves an Oscar for it, I think.
The religious and political enmity aside, it is very strange to me that no one asks the question - why did the German police open fire on the terrorists when they were trying to escape? Why wasn't the security good enough?
Some organized political radical groups (like the PLO) like to show their audacity (like they did on September 11, 2001) and there is not better effect created than by pushing the sentimental buttons of the public and the administration. Now at the Olympic games security is much better, thank god.
The acting in this movie is excellent and Eric Bana alongwith Ciaran Hinds are very convincing.
Spielberg shows the public and personal anguish of Israel very well.
Now we should hear from the Palestinian side - the anguish they suffer - maybe someone might realize something in the end, so we all wish.

People behind me proved how inane and irrelevant the movie was by saying things such as : " well, an eye for an eye, no hope for peace, seems to me nothing much has changed since then...".
People are ignorant of the context and the events as they happened then ,just as much as they are clueless about understanding today's context and the quantum leaps Israel and its latest government have undergone to achieve what they had pledged in Oslo, getting out of the colonies and letting Palestian leadership deal with their own internal battles...
Spielberg should stick to movies devoid of any attempt to make a point but entertain its audience instead of insulting history and all of the Jewish people in the process.
I have received a number of private negative reactions from friends to my original guarded recommendation of 'Munich' from folks that I respect. So I have decided to spend a little more time thinking this issue through. I wrote down a number of my thoughts about the negatives and the positives that I see in this film. I will add thoughts as they come to me. Of course, folks will make up their own minds.
Things that I found problematic in Spielberg’s ‘Munich’:
1) While I find it hard to believe that it would be intentional, in this film Spielberg reinforces the stereotype of Jews as money-obsessed, penny-pinchers: Examples: Receipts are loudly demanded for everything; salaries and bank accounts feature prominently; and constant complaints about the high financial price for each operation…etc.
2) The idea of the Israeli Mossad handlers requiring receipts for everything seems a silly insertion because no intelligence agency worth a dime would ask its own operatives to create a detailed and incriminating paper-trail of all their activities, especially highly covert and sensitive activities. Presumably these issues are handled by memory and trust - of known and highly trained operatives. What then would be the filmmaker’s motive to insert such a scene?
3) The tough blond-haired, blue-eyed (Conveniently a white South African during the era of aparthide) Jewish Mossad team-member was clearly cast to fill a certain stereotype: The Jewish Nazi. At one point he loudly proclaims in true Aryan fashion: “the only blood I care about is Jewish blood.” What would motivate the director to insert that?
4) The argument for Israel seems purposefully weak and based entirely on the Holocaust (oddly, not too dissimilar from the views of the current Iranian President). While ignoring that Zionism was a vibrant movement well before WWII, with a strong set of ideals and arguments for Israel that predate and have nothing to do with the Holocaust. In this film, Israel is all about victomology and the Holocaust. No Holocaust, no Israel.
5) The argument for the Palestinians in this film is forceful and goes un-countered; that their land was stolen from them illegally. Of course Israel was created by a legitimate vote of the United Nations, and Israel was illegally attacked by all surrounding Arab armies on the day of its creation in an Arab bid to destroy the fledgling state in its infancy, but none of that matters in this film apparently.
6) At one point the mother of Avner, the films main character “justifies” Israel’s existence with the following statement: “No one would give it to us so we took it.” Essentially reinforcing the Palestinian argument that their land was stolen. With advocates like that who needs enemies?
7) Prime Minister Golda Meir at one point talked about the need now to be strong and that “peace will have to wait.” This falsely suggests that peace was an option at all for Israel in 1972 and that Israel purposefully set peace aside. Spielberg needs reminding that in 1972 the PLO Charter called publicly and openly for Israel’s complete destruction and not a single Arab country recognized Israel’s right to even exist. Indeed, the following year, Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur war. What Peace exactly was Golda setting aside in the mind of the filmmaker?
8) The main message is the idea that there is no right or wrong in this conflict and that all of this is the product of an endless “cycle of violence” is constantly reinforced throughout the film. With the most obnoxious moment coming at the end with the twin towers dominating the New York skyline; as if to suggest that all of this Israeli tit-for-tat led to 9/11. I.e., no Israel, no 9-11.
9) Although this is not a direct criticism of the film itself, it does irk me a bit that the co-writer of this film was Tony Kushner who is on record as expressing that the creation of Israel was a historical mistake. It is somewhat surprising that Spielberg would feel comfortable associating himself so closely with this writer on this particular subject matter. It is also discomforting that the primary consultant was Dennis Ross, the great champion of the Oslo accords and the primary promoter in the US of Yasser Arafat as a legitimate “peacemaker.” The involvement of these folks tends to prejudice the film for many folks (not all) in advance, which is unfortunate.
Things that I liked about Spielberg’s ‘Munich’:
1) The Israeli team was largely portrayed sympathetically, as thinking and caring about innocent bystanders and struggling to operate in an ethical manner under the difficult circumstances of their mission. Many times during the film, the team aborted operations because of the possibility of innocent folks getting hurt, including the family members of the terrorists themselves. In my view that, more than anything else clearly and loudly distinguished them from the Palestinians in the film who were time and again seen killing innocent athletes, hijacking planes and sending letter-bombs. Despite the repeated attempts at moral relativism, and unless I’m blind and completely misunderstood what I was watching, there could be little doubt throughout the film that the Israelis were the imperfect good guys.
2) Furthermore, it was the Israeli team, not the Palestinian terrorists who are the main focus of the entire movie. The viewer is drawn in and compelled to sympathize with the main characters who are the Israelis not the Palestinians. The main characters, by enlarge do come across as compelling and sympathetic.
3) Purely from an entertainment point of view, I found the film fast and exciting. Others have complained to me that it is discombobulated, confusing and seems hastily done.
you can see that the 'pro-jewish' arguments are emotional and defensive and i think that says it all. all of the 'anger' and 'outrage' only confirms that spielberg has hit the nail on the head and for isreali sympathizers the truth often hurts.
the cliche'd tacticts of right-wingers and zealots that attack the messenger (spielberg) and distort his message wont serve to keep audiences away from this film and ultimately their cause (the film and the sustainability of isreal and western power in general) is a hopeless one.
Regarding Tom, 100 other human beings murdered by the Israelis. Where do you get this information (the right word is lies) from. I will tell you, from the radical left and pro-Palestinians web sites, which post endless lies about the conflict for innocents and stupid people like you that are willing to swallow anything against Israel. I went to the movie worried that it was going to look like a movie directed by a George Bush....the terrorists ride the black horse of evil, and those who hunt them down ride the white horse of good. God loves Isaac and hates Ishmael...we all know that right? (sarcasm)
I was pleased to see that Spielberg is not afraid to have a different vision. On a seperate note...it was a well-made film. The more i see Eric Bana (i think that's his name) act, the more impressed I am with his acting. Great flick...Spielberg surely must have known all the bullshit he was gonna get for making it.
Not that anyone sees the conflict in spiritual terms anymore, but if anyone does feel like food for thought here it is. What I got out of it is that Isaac's covenant can't redeem Ishmael. Neither can Israel's God redeem Ishmael. Only Ishmael's covenant and God and Messiah can redeem him. That's how I saw it anyway.

fascinating comments here.... I have to agree with some of the reviewers - the truth hurts. This film is inspired by (NOT based on) the book 'Vengeance' and it focuses on the assassins, not their victims. The Palestinians are portrayed as human people with families because that is what they are, and if you have to kill one of them at point blank range you may realise your victim is a person, not a monster. This is what happened to Aver.
By the way, of course The Mossad and the PLO would deny that it ever happened, would you believe anything they say?
It's a great film about what it means to murder, and the shot of the WTC at the end is the whole point. An eye for an eyr brought those towers down.

The pilot who pressed the button and dropped the bomb; the commanding officer who gave him the order; the Shin Bet agent who reported the houses uninhabited; the engineering expert who promised limited casualties; the Air Force commander who pushed for it and the new chief of staff who supported it; the minister who gave the okay from abroad to drop a one-ton bomb on a house in the heart of a densely populated residential neighborhood in the dead of night and later claimed that he didn't realize what would ensue and boasted that Israel had already dropped 47 bombs just like that one, as if numbers could somehow sanctify the unthinkable; the minister who knew or did not know, and only said in hindsight that it was "100 percent a mistake"; and the prime minister who knew, who made the decision and gave the order, congratulating himself afterward for "one of the most successful actions" ever - none of these people will ever see what he wrought. Not one of them will ever come to the dusty Daraj neighborhood in Gaza to see the horror he caused. More than likely it does not overly concern any of them, aside from the minor "damage to our image" that was quickly shrugged off.
None of these people will have to look Mohammed Matar in the eye: A man who labored for 30 years in Israel, and who this past Sunday lay prostrate on the floor amid the ruins of his house - his eyes and arm bandaged, his daughter and daughter-in-law and four of his grandchildren killed, three of his children wounded; wondering aloud, "Why have they done this to us?" The pilot, the commanding officer, the agent, the expert, the minister and the head of the government will not visit the dozens of apartments destroyed along with everything inside them, entire chapters of entire lives, totally destroyed. They won't see the survivors, whose only sin was in being neighbors of the wrong man, who wander among the ruins of their homes, grieving, bandaged, limping, unable to believe their eyes - everything they had, reduced to dust.
The first thing you notice at the bomb site is the color gray. Gray rubble. Gray apartments, the exposed bricks gray, the broken cement gray, a film of gray dust everywhere. Many of the buildings surrounding the home of the targeted Salah Shehadeh remain standing, only their contents destroyed utterly, from the force of the explosion. You walk through the apartments, stepping on the layers of destruction, barely recognizable bits and pieces debris: Was that a closet? That over there, a television? And this the bed?
Of the house where Shehadeh, head of the military wing of Hamas, was hiding out, nothing remained but three columns of concrete, from one of which the green flag of Hamas now flutters. This was a smart bomb nonpareil: It left no trace of the wanted man or anyone in his near vicinity: Shehadeh, his wife, his daughter and his companions. Bricks, bones, all gone. Nothing left.
Houses here are all jammed together. Three multi-family buildings of three stories each, nearly contiguous, where most of the deaths occurred, 15 in all. Two more apartment buildings nearby were also destroyed, and they weren't shacks either, as the defense establishment tried to claim the day after the bombing, attempting to rationalize the killings. These were permanent dwellings with corrugated tin roofs, and three people from the Al-Hweiti family were killed in them: Mona, a young woman of 22, Subhi, 5, and Mohammed, 3. Nearby buildings on all sides were also damaged by the explosion.
On the third floor of the Matar family home, where seven people died, six of them infants and children (the highest toll of any of the families involved), iron supports are already in place to keep the ceiling from collapsing on the surviving residents still living there. "This is the Israeli peace," and "These are American weapons," wrote someone on the wall in English.
Four days after the bombing, nearly everyone's gone but the residents themselves, who are easy to identify: they're still bandaged, in shock. The Saidi family's home, across from the wanted man's: No deaths here, only wounded. The remains of a green doorway lead to the remains of a living room which opens on the remains of a bedroom. Twenty children were sleeping in this house when the bomb was dropped. Their grandmother, Amna Saidi, 55, was already asleep when the bomb fell on the neighbors. She says she woke up suddenly to tremendous noise and a huge ball of flame. No, there was no big boom, but everything shook. She was sure it was an earthquake. Her grandson Lwai, 40 days old, fell out of his cradle but he's fine now, safe in his mother Mirfat's arms.
On the night of the bombing, Mirfat was in her apartment on the third floor, watching a late-evening broadcast from Dubai on television. Her husband, Khalil, went up to the roof to escape the unbearable heat. Their five children were asleep. One of them now retrieves the pieces of a doll from the debris and puts it back together again. Mirfat, her face pale, says that everything was forced into the apartment by the blast. She finds it hard to describe.

"We have nowhere to go," she says faintly. Their neighbors are helping in the meantime, with clothing and food.
There were injuries in the Bughdadi family and the Suq family and the Hijazzi family. The latter's home was half wrecked as was the television repair workshop in front of it. The dead came from the Matar, Al-Hweiti and A-Shawwa families, and of course the Shehadeh family.
Green canaries are dead in their cages. "The American bomb killed our birds," whispers a child, clutching one of the cages. Khaled Saidi, in his mid-thirties, had a hobby: raising songbirds. His house is full of cages, large and small. Now they're all jumbled up on the floor, the little corpses inside. Khaled is gone. Here's his picture on the wall. No one knows where Khaled is. Maybe he couldn't stand the sight of his dead birds. A plaster bas-relief with the words "Our Jerusalem" is broken in two. The destruction on the third floor is worse.
The house on the other side of the destroyed Shehadeh hideout was the Matar family's home. The deaths aren't self-evident now in the partially destroyed appearance of the house. Ra'ed Matar from the second floor lost his wife and his three children here: Iman, 27, Dalia, 5, Mohammed, 3, and Aiman, 18 months. Ra'ed's brother Rami, on the third floor, lost his baby daughter Dina, two months old. Mohammed Matar, Rami's and Ra'ed's father, on the first floor, lost his daughter Alaa, 10, his daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. He and three of his own children were hospitalized with injuries. All this in one multi-story building.
A bloodstained white T-shirt lies in the very narrow yard that separates the Matar house from its neighbor. This is where they found the body of the infant Aiman, two days after the bombing. Aiman, eighteen months old, who was on the second floor, was blown away, together with his crib, and landed in this narrow yard, where his body was buried under the rubble. Only the stench from the yard drew the rescuers there, to find his corpse.
Mohammed Matar, the bereaved father and grandfather, was three days in the hospital. Only on his release did they tell him the extent of his bereavement: his daughter, his daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. A large man wearing a dirty gray jalabiyya, he is lying on the ground, his strength nearly gone, leaning on one arm. He was asleep when the bomb fell. He says he woke up and saw things flying every which way, burying him. Blood dripped from one eye. He managed to rescue his grandson Ibrahim, cold, barefoot, his clothing in tatters, who was buried by debris and clings now to his injured grandfather. Today they operated on his son Mohammed, who was also injured. His son Ra'ed, bandaged, is walking around in the rubble and soon Rami will arrive, due to be released today from the hospital.
Mohammed worked for 30 years at the Yakhin canned goods factory in Ashkelon until the current closure. He tells proudly of the letters of commendation he received over the years for his work there, and now he can't find them under all the debris. "This is what we got from them in the end," he mumbles.
What should the Palestinians do now?
"God knows; I don't. Just like they (the Israelis) want to live, we also want to live. The day before, there was almost an agreement with Hamas and the next day they attacked us."
Do you want revenge?
"God takes revenge. Only God does that. What can I say? Fifty years and there's no peace. We hear about peace, but look at us."
A young man comes into the yard, pale and trembling, walking unsteadily, his arm bandaged. This is Ra'ed. Rami has come home from the hospital but he doesn't yet know that his daughter was killed. Please, no one tell Rami, requests Ra'ed: He wants to do that. Let's take Rami to a friend's house, Ra'ed tells his father: a house some distance away from here. Then Ra'ed, who lost his wife and three children, will somehow tell his brother that he has lost his baby daughter.

I liked the movie thought at some point I felt it was too long and monothematic. Of course its point of view is partial. But it should not be taken as a history documentary. It is a movie.
