Walking straight into something I know nothing at all about here, a Documentary by Xan Cassavetes about Los Angeles' very own 'Z Channel' which ran from 1974 - 1988 and broadcast odd, obscure, little-seen movies to around 90 thousand local subscribers. A Channel by film fans for film fans, credited with having brought many great films a wider audience, regular exposure and good publicity too. The film has apparently aired on TV Stateside, and has made it to Festivals it seems, so I would be interested in anything you want to say around the film or the Channel.

'Z Channel' Flash Encoded Trailer.

There's lots of other snippets out there, but I've just picked out a few larger pieces to pass along. I will be looking at them closer later on, but for now this is (as is often the case) something I have just picked up on that I am passing along.

I watched the film at the Rotterdam Film Festival this year. Like many of the documentaries I have seen recently it's to long, but it makes up for that in subject matter. This channel was just brilliant! I mean the fact that projects like these don't show up more often just shows how poor the cultural climate is.

This has been showing fairly frequently as of recent on The Sundance Channel in the states (Or was it IFC?), and is worth checking out.

Cool channel, mediocre doc (and that is being generous....as cadrach sad, waaaaaaaay toooooooo looooonnggg. It also never really digs deep enough into Jerry Harvey's life, even though that seems to be primarily on the films agenda, it just skims the surface...

well, i was looking through reviews on Amazon of documentaries listed in the 'upcoming art' section at thedigitalbits.com, and it seems that (from the conflicting reviews for just about everything) unless you are absolutely obsessed with a subject or strangely addicted to docs then theyre a bit of a minefield. anyone especially interested in documentaries care to explain the attraction? they should be one step up from dvd extras, which are too brief for the most part, and theyre expensive / time consuming to do well, so where are all the great examples of things like docs or books on movie fandom?
