Just as Berlin 2012 is about to kick off over in the German capital, a decidedly more modest selection of titles has just been announced for this year's Hong Kong European Film Festival. Curated in part by the various consulates that represent their particular countries in the city, each has put forward a film, of both cultural and artistic significance, to feature in the festival.
HKEUFF 2012 will feature 15 films and run from 2-14 March. Opening the proceedings is CHICKEN WITH PLUMS, the second film from the Oscar-nominated writer-directors of PERSEPOLIS, Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi. Moving away from animation, this is the story of a heartbroken violinist (Mathieu Amalric) who reflects back on his childhood and forward into his children's futures. The film also features Maria de Mederios, Golshifteh Farahani and Isabella Rosellini.
Other notable entries include the Dardennes Brothers' THE KID WITH A BIKE, winner of the Grand Prix de Jury at last year's Cannes Film Festival and Edgar Pera's bizarre black and white THE BARON, winner of four Portuguese Film Awards including Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The festival will close with the long-awaited premiere of Tomas Alfredson's TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, nominated for 11 BAFTAs and featuring the first ever Oscar-nominated performance from Gary Oldman, leading an incredible ensemble of British acting talent.
