Variety has published an article today stating that DreamWorks is working on a new feature adapation of Daphne DuMaurier's famous classic thriller "Rebecca" together with Working Title Films. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are mentioned as producers.
Some call it a remake of Hitchcock's 1940 version already, though the press release states that script writer Steven Knight has been hired to look at the source novel. Knight is known for "Dirty Pretty Things" and "Eastern Promises" and is currently also working on his directorial debut "Hummingbird", starring Jason Statham.
The story concerns a young woman who marries a millionaire on impulse, but when she arrives at the man's huge mansion everybody seems gloomily obsessed with the memories of his previous (and deceased) wife, Rebecca.
It will be interesting to see if fans will be as outspoken about this production as they are about other remakes. Hitchcock's "Rebecca" (starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, both in their absolute primes at the time) is widely regarded as one of the ten best thrillers ever made and is a fixed entry in IMDB's top 250.
Having said that, it has been more than 70 years so maybe there will not be as much of an outcry.
It is nice that DreamWorks mentions the original novel as the intended source but as Hitchcock's "Rebecca" kept very close to the novel already, I wish Steven a lot of luck trying to create a distinguishing script.
We'll just have to wait and see...
