Is Deckard coming back?

In March of 2011 word broke that Alcon Entertainment and Warner Brothers had teamed up to return to the world of Ridley Scott's classic scifi Blade Runner. In following weeks Scott himself would sign on to direct the project - it is widely expected to be Scott's next project after Prometheus, though he's got a number in the works so scheduling could always change - but the official line has always been that Scott would be the only returning alumni, that the plan was a completely fresh reboot.

In fact, producer Andrew Kosove made this abundantly clear in an August interview with the LA Times, saying:

In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott but if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting.

Well, either Kosove was throwing up a smoke screen or Scott disagrees.

Twitch has learned that Harrison Ford has entered into early talks to join the new Blade Runner. While this is still very early stages and it is quite possible that things won't work out the obvious implication is that what we are looking at is not a reboot but a direct sequel to the original.

Deckard can't be an old dude-He's a replicant!! It's true. A unicorn told me.

I like the idea of another Blade Runner, i just hope they don't mess it up...

You wouldn't go wrong if you used the K.W. Jeter Blade Runner books as templates for a sequel. But neither Hollywood or Ridley Scott is all that bright.

Yep, i'm sure Ridley Scott is sitting at home saying "Boy, if only I could be as bright as this John Caples chap. He seems to have it all figured out."

>>"...the obvious implication is that what we are looking at is not a reboot but a direct sequel to the original."

Unless, of course, Ford is talking about taking a different role.

Incredibly, incredibly unlikely. Putting Ford into the film in a different role would be nothing but a HUGE distraction to anything else going on in the film. About the only way I could see it working is if you start from the 'Deckard is a replicant' position and then have Ford in the cast as the human that Deckard's design was based on. In which case I suppose a prequel could be possible - if he's an old guy trying to extend his life through an artificial replacement - but a sequel is more likely and, in either case, you're still looking at a story directly linked to the original rather than a reboot. There is absolutely no sensible argument for putting the star of the original film into the new one if what you're trying to do is a fresh reboot.

Like the huge distraction of Lance Henriksen in Alien vs. Predator?
When they do a reboot, a "total reinvention", I see no reason why the couldn't. Except it's not what a fanboy would want. But who cares about them?

user-pic

First, Henriksen was not a lead in any of the Alien movies. Second, Henriksen has never been an actor of anything near Ford's stature. And, finally, Henriksen's role in AvP was the model for the Bishop android created within that same universe. There's a direct, logical story link between the characters. AvP isn't any sort of reboot, it's a story in the same universe, earlier in the timeline. And, as I said IN THE COMMENT YOU ARE RESPONDING TO this exact scenario is about the only one that would make sense if you were to bring Ford back into Blade Runner without the film being a sequel. Read before talking.

Oh my... What's the big deal?
I didn't say anything about reboot of Aliens or anything like that. I just said it was a huge distraction to see an actor of a classic movie in another role of the same franchise.
"There's a direct, logical story link between the characters." Well a forced one for good ol' marketing. But that's not my point.
My point is, that maybe the producers don't care as much about a logic contiuation as you do. And while we all can figure out some spins how Ford will fit into the Blade Runner reboot, it might be completely different or won't happen at all. So why the heat?

He could always play Holden or Bryant..

I'm still expecting to hear the casting of Shia LaBeouf in the lead with zac effron as the main antagonist and Taylor Swift will be battling Miley Cyrus for the role of femme fatale. I'm not convinced Ridley will have anything to do with this other than be a producer.

No, Ridley's directing. All parties are very clear on that.

Please, please, please...
LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

As with the very first poster, one of the reasons the original is great is the dubiety over whether Deckard is a replicant, if you see him as an old man then you might as well call the film Bladerunner Reloaded and start advertising Bladerunner Revolutions.

If you can't think of a new idea then don't damage a classic for the sake of pocketing a few quid. Still at least they aren't going back and trying to CGI new scenes into the original, maybe Lucas has at least scared people away from being quite that disrespectful to fans.

Ehm... that was a joke I hope? That was EXACTLY what they did for "Blade Runner: The Final Cut". Thankfully that was done with a lot of respect (more of a final cgi clean-up really, only a few bits and bobs are new), and Warners was classy enough to release all known versions on DVD and BluRay.

Nobody mentioned "Soldier" yet in this here thread? Maybe Harrison Ford will run into Kurt Russell...

(ducks and runs)
