You know what they say about overnight successes? Most of them are built on years upon years of hard work in relative obscurity. And that is certainly the case with Belgian animators Stephane Aubier and Vincent Patar.

When the duo's stop motion animated film Panique Au Village - A Town Called Panic in English - premiered in Cannes it created an instant sensation amongst fans of cult animation, many of who didn't realize that this was not a new creation. Aubier and Patar had started telling these demented stories years before on Belgian TV. Panique Au Village was a cult hit in Belgium long before it was a feature film and its creators well known even before that for their earlier series Pic Pic Andre.

Will Aubier and Patar's stories of a pig and horse find the same success on the big screen as did their plastic toy Cowboy and Indian? We'll find out soon because the development of a Pic Pic Andre film is now public knowledge.

The project has just been announced as part of Cartoon Movie, an annual event held in Lyons for European animation projects at various stages to find production partners, investors and distribution. Not every project showcased at Cartoon Movie ends up getting made but a great many do and my money says this one will.
