A six-minute preview for Studio 4C animated film Berserk Golden Age Arc I: Egg of the Supreme Ruler (Berserk Ougon Jidaihen I: Hao no Tamago, ベルセルク 黄金時代篇Ⅰ 覇王の卵) has been uploaded on Nico Nico Douga and Youtube. Based on Kentaro Miura's popular manga, the film adaptation will tell the story of the Golden Age arc (refer to wikipedia here for the plot details) in a three-part feature film series. The video provides an overview to the plot and characters for those unfimilar with the dark fantasy.
The theatrical release date in Japan is on February 4th. You'll find the extended trailer embedded below.

Damn, it's the whole series done over again. They are not going to get ANYWHERE re-doing all that! The only thing I hate more than origins, is seeing origins done over and over, slightly different. Just get to the good stuff.
I agree. When I heard about this series being in production, I cheered at the possibility of seeing a continuation of a very suddenly halted series (which touched only on a small part of the much greater manga narrative) - and some early previews, featuring the Skull Knight, seemed to support this interpretion...
... but no, we´re getting a remake of what is *already there*. Not that it isn´t a great story or anything, but why retread ground? I hoped that it would at least lead into a continuation after the "Golden Years" arc, but press releases have been extremely noncomittal on this even being an aspiration. Damnit.
They're doing it right this time. yes there will be some retreading, but they are including all the key characters from the manga that were missing in the previous anime like Skullknight. And its studio 4C who do amazing anime!
I understand the disappointment over this retreading the Golden Age instead of continuing from where the original series left off, but there was realistically no way that could have happened in terms of securing a budget. The anime has a cult following, to be sure, but convincing investors/a good studio to pony up an insane amount of cash for a new project that relies entirely on audiences being familiar with a 15 year old anime series or its manga source material was *never* going to happen. The only issue was how heavily they were going to condense the Golden Age in order to get new audiences on board, as well as existing Berserk fans--personally, I'd rather see them take three movies to do it, which will still involve a lot of cutting, rather than have them try to pack everything into a ten minute prologue sequence or even a single movie. Think about it: everything that comes after the Golden Age is devoid of emotional impact if you aren't intimately familiar with the characters and their history, which a very large percentage of people who see these movies will be.
Now, that still leaves the possibility for the third or even second film bringing us up to the end of the Golden Age and breaking some fresh territory, which would be amazing. And even if not, assuming this trilogy does well I think there's real hope for a second trilogy that goes further with the story, but I'm honestly not sure that will happen--much as I love Berserk, and I love it more than just abut any other anime or fantasy, period, the fact is that it's pretty goddamn brutal and dark to find a wide enough audience. Here's hoping, though--big time.
obviously none of you have done any research at all...and you call yourselves fans....yes they are doing golden age over...that is because yes THEY ARE GOING TO CONTINUE THE SERIES...if you dont believe me its mentioned on wikipedia...look it up bitches...three movies with the first coming out February 2012...in japan of course....that being said...while most of you are bitching and whining about this remake...if you watched the original anime...explain to me how you would expect them to continue the series without implementing Skull Knight...yes its a minor aspect but THATS HOW CASKA AND GUTS ESCAPED THE ECLIPSE....you cant just randomly throw him into the mix without explanation....pretty important dont ya think
