I've often thought Canberra would be a great place to shoot a zombie movie or Western.
While filming in London for 28 Days Later, they had to shut down major intersections at 6:00am and digitally remove London citizens, in Canberra you could just go to Civic on the weekend while everyone is over in trendy Manuka and film all the tumbleweeds and isolated streets you want!
Now a Canberra filmmaking collective has gone at least half of the way, announcing production on a zombie movie set in the Australian capital city, albeit in a theatre insulated from a zombie plague happening in the outside world. It's called Theatre of the Dead.
Locked away in their theatre, the cast and crew of "Angels In Hell" spend seemingly endless hours in rehearsal, unaware of the rapid and shocking changes taking place in the world outside. Now, trapped in the theatre by a horde of the living dead, with limited resources, they must decide between staying put and hoping for rescue, or taking matters into their own hands and making an extremely risky break for it.As debate over the course of action splits the group, and the spreading zombie virus starts to reduce their numbers, they are unaware that the greatest danger to their lives dwells within their ranks.
I'm hoping they do make a break for it and head out into Canberra, and exploit all the awesome possibilities of a zombie virus outbreak in that fair city. Until then, we can only dream -- and make public servant jokes.
