THE DARK KNIGHT RISES In Trailer Form

by Todd Brown, December 19, 2011 2:38 PM

Thumbnail image for BatmanBanePoster.jpgWith the extended promo for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises now screening in from of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol it was really only a matter of time before the official trailer arrived online. Bootlegs started popping up over the weekend but today it arrived looking as it should.

Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar(R) winner Christian Bale ("The Fighter") again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar(R) winner Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose"), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar(R) winner Michael Caine ("The Cider House Rules") plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar(R) winner Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby") reprises the role of Lucius Fox.
Everything Christopher Nolan has done with this franchise has worked and worked exceptionally well thus far so I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. And he needs it because this is the first time he's struck a wrong note in my book. I do not like the Bane mask. At all. I don't like how much it blocks Hardy's face, I don't think the design works with the real-world aesthetic Nolan has been working with here and I very much do not like how it muffles Hardy's voice. Not sharing a design sensibility is one thing but this mask could very seriously damage Hardy's performance because people simply won't be able to hear him very well when he's got it on and that's a big problem. Check the trailer below.

I hate to admit it, but I couldn't understand what he said, either.

Nice. But the question is, will this be listed as the best film ever made on imdb?

user-pic

third movie or trilogies always suck...it's always a shame.

but Chris Nolan always make good movies, so I don't think this movie would suck....then again Sam Raimi made good movies too, so did Bret Ranter, and also David S. Goyer etc
the list goes on.

I'm not a big batman fan so I really don't care if this wins or sucks.

When did Brett Ratner and David Goyer make good movies?

I think the trailer looks great.

And while I did understand what Hardy said, I hope the mask comes off when he has several lines.

Also, what's the purpose of the thing? Is it a 'Blue Velvet' sorta thing?

Once Bane doesn't start shouting "baby wants to f*ck" it should be ok.

user-pic

yeah too bad we can't hear what Mini-Bane says in his Scorpion/SubZero mask..

More than the mask, what's with the accent, Bane? To say it's a little bizarre is being nice. While I'm with Todd on this and have every faith that Nolan will deliver an exciting and epically stage finale for Bats I think the reception to Bane's vocal limitations has already been so large and unanimous I suspect will see him given all kinds of ADR help before the film is released. At least I hope so, because it really really needs it.

i agree with todd totally. from the very first stills of bane i thought the mask looked stupid..to much gasmask/rubber like...the design is not cool at all..and yeah you cant really hear what he says...i had such hugh hopes for hardy as bane, but must admit im rather dissapointed looking at the trailer....

What I find odd is that, with Nolan's 'real world' aesthetic, why they didn't just give him a stylized Lucha mask. Whatever. I'm sure it will be entertaining.

How come people are having trouble understanding Hardy. Came through loud and clear at my end. The mask serves a purpose, it's not just a mask, it's part of a device that he has to wear. I just hope he doesn't come across as an action figure like the Green Goblin did in Spiderman.

IT's fine in this trailer. It's a lot harder to get every word in the IMAX Prologue though, I've seen it twice, and optimistically, I catch 50% of what he says there.

I thought for sure it was an exaggeration but, honestly, I had to back and listen to it again because I just wasn't sure of what he said.

I am afraid that Nolan is going to have a Huge uphill battle on this one and NOT because of Hardy's voice. You can see it already in the posts.

Look, TDK had the massive commercial fanbase that it does because it is the Least comic book style Batman film. There is a Huge segment of fans who Loved TDK only as a HEAT style crime drama and because of Heath Ledger's Joker performance which they worship.
I know a lot of guys who talk about TDK endlessly and NEVER mention Bale or anything to do with the Batman franchise.

It looks as if Nolan is taking the films back into the Comic Book world somewhat in this new film and and have NO problem with it as a Batman comic book fan.

However, let's be honest, he will lose a good portion of the commercial TDK "crossover" fans who aren't into comics and only looked at TDK as a straight up crime movie and who worshipped Ledger as the joker.
Those people are NEVER going to accept Hardy's Bane and this film as whole if it actually does carry the vibe of the trailer.

I am personally behind Nolan 100% on this film. People have to remember this IS Batman and it IS based off a comic book. Deal with it!

This trailer somehow lowered my expectations. I can't quite put my finger on it. Not because of the Bane design. Maybe all the daytime shots. I don't get this Batman feeling... Or because the scenes shown seem random. I mean, if you don't know the previous Batman films, this trailer will be confusing at best.
But who cares if the trailer isn't great when the film is? I'll be waiting.

I firmly believe in Nolan. None of his movies have ever given me a negative vibe, and there's always a high note in there, a bar he raises, and a memorable scene strewn in.

Bane is an amazing character - One you can get so much from with little effort. Most people seem to think he's some sort of henchman or secondary character - he's nothing of the sort. If there was any story that should be brought to the big screen, it's the Knightfall story arc, which this looks like it's borrowing from. Sure, Bane looks all cookie-cutter merc, but I'm sure that's minor in comparison to the character overall.

I heard him just fine in the IMAX prologue. Sure, I hate the sound the mask makes, but that, according to Nolan in Empire magazine, is on purpose. It makes Bane sound like a gorilla. I guess it works...

I have no expectations when it comes to films anymore - it adds to the excitement of actually watching it happen in realtime, rather than making up your own ideas of how the movie's going to go, and totally frustrating you in the end.
