We have not been shy about our love for David Michod's Animal Kingdom in these pages, the Sundance winning Australian crime drama that netted Jacki Weaver an Oscar nomination. Based on a real life Melbourne based crime family, Animal Kingdom is quite simply one of the finest debut films that I have ever come across. And soon it may be coming to television.
Word broke on Friday afternoon that Showtime are developing a television series based on the film with John Wells supervising with the original writer-director (Michod) and producer Liz Watts also on board.
With a large cast of complex characters Animal Kingdom is prime material to develop for television, where the longer format will allow for a deeper treatment of many characters who remain on the sidelines of the feature. This could be rather good.

I indeed liked this film. That said, I could not shake the similarities (vast ones at that) to the old Christopher Walken/Sean penn film AT CLOSE RANGE.
Granted, it is a basic story, and one I've even seen people I know live through in their own way, but as a film...yeah... ANIMAL KINGDOM seems a little more than influenced by AT CLOSE RANGE.
