2012 looks to be a dream year for big, splashy, genre event-releases. I mean that in a really good way too. Peter Jackson is toiling down in Middle Earth, Joss Whedon is keeping it between the lines over at the Avengers' headquarters, but maybe best of all? Ridley Scott is back on that lonely little rock in space, LV-426, battling an Alien menace in a harsh planetary environment, to bring us the story of how it all began, with the long awaited Prometheus.
The concept of the Greek god Prometheus figures metaphorically throughout the film. It is also the name of the ship the humans arrive on, and it speaks conceptually to the story itself, which is about the possible discovery of the extraterrestrial origins of Man...and, the profound revelation that there are indeed other life-forms out there, some of which are extremely lethal.
The cast, which is just flat out kick-ass, includes Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Patrick Wilson, and Noomi Rapace, promises to help director Scott deliver one class-act of a sci-fi action thriller. Even with the magic revving up in the Shire right now, my cinematic gaze is still drawn to the barren wastes of LV-426. Opening day, June 8, 2012 simply cannot come fast enough. In the meantime, here is the trailer, which is short, but damn is it sweet. The shot of the classic derelict spacecraft...just sayin'...woah.
So far no true official HD version has dropped, when it does, the clip below will be updated. Until then, check it out - and prepare for 100% bad ass.

This trailer is exactly what I expected - no more, no less - which leaves me a little disappointed and worried about the final product.
The Alien film series has been one of the most interesting of the past few decades, with each film reinventing and exploring different ideas in sci fi/horror, political and social commentary (and that included the weak link of the third film.) Hopefully this film will add another dimension.
I love love that the titles animate in just like the original ALIEN title, just in case nerds don't get it.
It looks very good. Of course any trailer should look good but I have high hopes.
This is just a teaser of a trailer, there will be more in the coming months, but Scott and 20thC Fox have been particularly tight lipped and closed set with this movie, of course they aren't going to give much away.
Shelagh M. Rowan-Legg, I've recently rewatched the blu-rays, and found Alien3 to be a very strong and unique entry in the series, it certainly surprised me watching the extended/directors cut how good it looked, if anything, the biggest let down was Aliens, which has dated very badly, great popcorn movie, but Alien 3 treated the creature with similar reverence that Alien did.
If there's anyone who should be able to give us a decent sci-fi, it's Ridley, he's certainly mining similar visual tropes as Alien, the title glyphs, the cut and sounds used in the trailer, Giger on board etc...
Just to be able to take my brain into the theatre with me, will be a novel concept, Ridley Scott, Alien universe, sci-fi.... no brainer, I'm there slready.
Well said nikcj1.
Good god I can't wait! My most anticipated movie of 2012. Forget super heroes in tights (unless it's Webb's Spider-Man), forget midgets singing a cappella, forget the goofiness of Bane, forget a board game movie, THIS is the one to see!
I really didn't want to watch the trailer but I couldn't resist.
My only quibble are the spacesuits...much prefer the Moebius style in the first film.
If the film is half as good as the teaser, I'll be happy. Of course, very rarely does a film live up to (or at least maintain the intensity/tone of) a unique trailer such as this. Dragon Tattoo, I'm looking at you. Same for A Serious Man, although that has gone on to become one of my favorite Coen Bros. films.
