Last month Twitch broke word that The King's Speech star Colin Firth had been offered the villain role in Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Oldboy. Firth would confirm the offer in subsequent interviews while playing coy about his intended response but had he taken the role on it would have seen him playing Josh Brolin's tormentor in the story of a man kidnapped and imprisoned for years without explanation.
Well, they're going to need to find another kidnapper. Twitch has learned that Firth has now officially passed on the project meaning they need to find someone else to play opposite Brolin in what is being planned as an early 2012 shoot.

There are quite a few actors that I think would fit that role. Michael Fassbender would probably do a really good job, as would Christian Bale. Did anything come of that rumour?
Cillian Murphy would be a good pick.
They should get Sheldon from the big bang theory to play the lead Villain and have Penny play the lead actress, problem solved...
Do we know much about where/when this is filming? Any UK shooting?
I am guessing it's going to be Javier Bardem. I just know it.
If that falls through though for whatever reason, any of the following actors who actually have played pretty enigmatic dark characters before:
Colin Farrell
Brad Pitt
Tom Cruise
Bill Paxton
Jude Law
Jim Carrey
Russel Crowe
Sam Rockwell
Kevin Spacey
Some of these give me the shudders (and not in a good way) but each would give a pretty unique slant to this character. It all depends on what would fit the script best I guess...
As an afterthought: Choi Min-sik. You know you'd want to see that!
