Screen Gems Takes Remake Rights To Gareth Evans' THE RAID

by Todd Brown, November 9, 2011 6:48 PM

Following lengthy negotiations American remake rights for Toronto International Film Festival hit The Raid have gone to Screen Gems. Writer-director Gareth Evans will serve as an executive producer on the remake, though he'll be too busy writing and directing the Indonesian sequel to the original film to be involved as writer or director on this one. XYZ Films - executive producers on the original Indonesian version - will be serving as producers on the English version.

To any concerned that the planned remake may delay the North American release of the original, fear not. That's not going to happen. Expect an announcement about release plans soon.

And, putting my producer hat on for a moment as I'm part of XYZ, fight fans speak up now: What English speaking fighters would you like to see in the remake? We're hoping to showcase a fistful of them, so speak up now.

Jason MotherF'n Statham. He needs to be in the American remake, only way I will watch a remake.

user-pic

Gina Carano, Randy Couture, The Rock, Vin Desel, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White and Abe Vigoda

Gina Carano would be perfect for the main lead, especially after the rave reviews of her movie "Haywire", it'll be the one-two punch she needs to be a great action star. The rest mentioned by kungfueurotrash could be opponents or teammates.

Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White

It would definitely have to feature Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins. It could also feature appearances and/or choreography by guys like Larnell Stovall, Damien Walters, and Chyna McCoy.

user-pic

While Michael Jai White and Jason Statham have decent martial arts skills, they are far from being impressive. Besides, you want someone who can stand a chance when compared to Iko Uwais. Scott Adkins is a great choice.....he just needs someone to help him amp up his charisma level. If the lead doesn't have to be Caucasian, Johnny Ngyuen is another good one. Maybe squeeze in Lateef Crowder somewhere in the movie as a villain or a sidekick.

Joe in the box has some excellent suggestions unlike all of the Hollywood "action" stars from other people. For fucks sake someone even said Jake Gyllenhall. If you're going for somebody you have to go for martial arts talent, someone who can perform up to Iko Uwais' level. I can't remember who mentioned Drive, good call, but I would definitely get the Alpha Stunt team involved in the project (who did the action for Drive & the amazing Broken Path).

I also wouldn't go with ageing martial arts stars like Donnie Yen or Jet Li, if you're going to blow so much of the budget on big stars you're not going to have the required time to give the film the level of action needed.

any of these guys would be great… In no particular order of preference…

Scott Adkins
Marko Zaror
Cyril Raffaelli
Mark Dacascos
Johnny Nguyen
Johnny Yong Bosch
Erik Jacobus
Wu Jing– not sure he speaks English but he would make an excellent villain.
Dan Southworth
Daniel O'Neill

I forgot Latif Crowder, he would make a superb fighter for the hero to face.

user-pic

time for us to cry out loud!

"WTF is this sh*!?"
another remake!? first Akira and now this?

user-pic

Nah, already tried to bait Todd but he laughed in my face...

user-pic

I'm all for the remake because it means that Gareth gets the funding/budget to get the sequel Berandal going. And that is going to be a very, very, very good thing.

The more you think about it, Gina Carano is the only choice. Iko left some giant shoes to fill, and Carano would make the remake work.

user-pic

If either this remake or the sequel to the original features an army of ho's, I want a "based on a concept by..." credit!

user-pic

From a purely commercial value and star power and who has proven himself to be a pretty awesome action star, Matt Damon. If not, then Statham.

And Michael Wincott as the crimelord. That dude needs more roles, he's such a bad ass.

user-pic

Amen to Michael Wincott!
As for the lead, no matter how much you will fight it, it will turn out to be Jake Gyllenhaal.

user-pic

Todd. THR is reporting that Iko and Yayan will choreograph the remake.

There are scheduling issues to work out because both will be needed on Berandal before the end of 2012, plus language issues, but yes. The intention is for both to be involved.

Wow some terrible suggestions so far. Are people really thinking that the likes of Statham, Jai White, The Rock and Vin Diesel are the best fighters to showcase? Half these people aren't worth their salt when it comes to showing off actual fighting talent. Like people have suggested someone like Gina Carano, pick them for the fighting talents foremost and give them a scene to showcase their talents, this is a perfect film for it.

Saying that I don't follow any of the fighting scenes like MMA etc so I have none to suggest myself but I think people are coming at it from the wrong angle!

user-pic

Scott Adkins, has to be. The man needs higher profile leading roles. For the crime lord, Mark Dacascos, would love to see him unleash some nastiness. Hell, why not go the whole Drive reunion route, get Steve Wang in to direct with Koichi Sakamoto on action duties.

user-pic

One of the things that made the first "Die Hard" film work so well was that Bruce Willis was a tv-comedian, not an established action hero. We rooted for him but as he wasn't Rambo (yet) it was thrilling to see whether he actually would die or not. The poster didn't show him kicking ass, it showed him scared and desperate.

Now with Iko in "The raid", we know from the outset that he can kick ass but he looks so diminutive, and the situation escalates so far beyond his control that the audience can never safely relax and figure that Iko will win.

Now I'm not saying that a remake of "The Raid" should be exactly the same as "Die Hard", but I do say that the film will probably be more thrilling with a central figure who looks unlikely to survive. Someone who rises to the occasion with skill and strength despite initial audience expectations (be it because he is small, pudgy, funny, old or whatever). And this is why I'm not automatically going with Scott Adkins as a choice for the lead although he would make a good team member.

user-pic

You mean like Mall Cop? :) I'm not sure if I agree with taking that direction. Yes, it is more suspenseful when the protagonist is not some hulking figure who looks like he can crush everybody in his path - e.g. Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, etc. However, in order to clear multiple floors of a building populated with armed-to-the-teeth ruthless thugs, you need someone with fantastic hand-to-hand combat skills who can throwdown without having to over-edit and over-cut every fight scene to make it look convincing. Die Hard worked because it was mostly about outwitting the villains to defeat them with little carnage involved. Judging from The Raid's trailer, I'm guessing it will be mostly about kicking ass with a very high body count.

user-pic

Those are very good points Ard, and i completly agree. If you take it to it's logical conclusion then the idea would be to go with an unknown actor who has a background in martial arts (or at least the required physical skills), but looks to be an typical everyman.
Could even be a chance to uncover the next great western action star.

user-pic

Fuck it. Jack Black and Will Farrell, with Charles Durning as the crime lord.

user-pic

I hope it doesn't involve "a damsel in distress". I don't wanna see michele rodriguez or any hollywood hottie as a hostage.

user-pic

I'm as mad as I've ever been - and I haven't even seen THE RAID! ;}

user-pic

-Scott Adkins
-Marko Zaror
-Jet Li
-Michael Jai White
-Donnie Yen
-Cyril Raffaelli
-Benny Urquidez
-Richard Norton
-Mark Dacascos
-Johnny Nguyen
-Ernie Reyes Jr.
-Ray Park
-Collin Chou

user-pic

I have not seen The Raid yet, but my picks for a remake would be...Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, Jet Li, Micahel Jai White, Mark Dacascos and Wu Jing.

user-pic

My picks, with exclamation marks added for emphasis...

-Scott Adkins!
-Marko Zaror
-Michael Jai White
-Donnie Yen
-Mark Dacascos
-Lateef Crowder!
-Johnny Nguyen
-Wu Jing
-Johnny Yong Bosch!
-Nathan Jones (If there's a role for a huge dude)
-Cung Le
-One of the Kosugis

user-pic

No Jason Statham please!! Although I'm certain he's capable of taking on a large gang of thugs by boring them to death with his monotone dialog delivery and lacklustre martial arts skills.

user-pic

I have not seen The Raid yet, but my picks for a remake would be...Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, Jet Li, Micahel Jai White, Mark Dacascos and Wu Jing.

user-pic

Skills-wise Wu Jing is very impressive. I doubt he has enough command of the English language to qualify him as a lead.

As for Mark Dacascos.....I don't know....his voice - too soft/effeminate? - diminishes his on-screen presence.

user-pic

All of these language problems make my head spin. However, if that weren't a barrier, I'd want Wu Jing, Johnny Nguyen, Jet Li, & Won Bin. The problem with guys like Michael Jai White and Adkins is that they LOOK like fighters, The Raid employs a lot of fighters who LOOK like regular guys, that is one of the reasons their action is so impressive.

user-pic

Sorry J Hurtado.....but it's an insult to the other three folks you mentioned when you include Won Bin with them ;) The guy has only one decent action film on his resume and most the action was most likely performed by a body double. He is nowhere in the same league as the Wu Jing and Jet Li & Johnny Ngyuen.

Well, considering big names will be hard to get, here is my list of great fighters.

-Scott Adkins
-Michael Jai White
-Marc Dacascos
-Larnell Stovall
-Darren Shahlavi
-Matt Mullins
-Lateef Crowder
-Eric Jacobus (Rise and Fail)
-Shawn Bernal & Emmanuel Manzanares (Yo Soy Un Hombre Loco)

-Donald Mills & Brendon Huor (Naruto Shippuden: Dreamers Fight)

Iko Uwais would be a good choice for high profile bad guy. Silent type henchman with deadly combat technique. No need for serious dialogue, just few crazy stares should be enough. I want to see him killing the likes of M. J White, Statham...ahh... for fuck sake, even Gina Carano with hundreds of brutal stabbing in the neck

The one who plays Iko should be a young actor whom audience can quickly rooted but he can transform into a monster when cornered. I choose Sean Faris or Cam Gigandet (both from Never Back Down) or a bit older guy : Gary Daniels, with Cam as my preferred one since he has a 'farmer boy' looks, good act (Twilight/New Moon, Pandorum, Burlesque, Priest) and he holds black-belt in Krav Maga.

The villains, Gary Daniels can plays Donny Alamsyah's role since he has resemblance with Cam, while Mad Dog could be played by Jai White, Lateef Crowder or Oleg Taktarov . Jaka played by The Rock or other big guy which will make the Jaka vs Mad Dog duel impressive.

I think a good mix of Silat, MMA, Krav Maga will be quite interesting, no triple turning or flying kick, no fancy moves and most of all, should be filmed with no shaky cam :)

I prefer an actor with fragile look, like Shia Leabouf, Jake Gylenhall or even Robert Pattinson for the main lead, typical of everyman :)

user-pic

This is a hardcore action movie, not Brokeback Mountain 2 :)

The character played by Iko was a family-man. An Afro-american actor usually good at this so I chose Michael Jai White.

However, change the gender would also be a good idea, so having Gina Carano will also be a good idea.

The character of the team leader (played by Joe Taslim) should be played by a typical, muscular build, male-caucasian actor. So you can put any big names here.

user-pic

Why does Gina Carano's name keep coming up? Is it all based on a few early reviews of Haywire?! As far as I'm concerned, she's an unknown entity and the verdict it out on her until January 2012.

user-pic

Has Sony decided upon a release date for The Raid and it just can't be announced yet? On Twitter, Gareth Evans has mentioned that the Indonesian release will be now pushed back later than January. Will the US release be affected or postponed by this?

user-pic

Yes, yes and no in that order. We're trying to take it out day and date around the world and there are a LOT of different distributors in different territories, so it's requiring a lot of coordination and materials preparation. You don't have too long to wait, though.

user-pic

Great news, thank you so much Todd!
