Is The Hunt Over? MANHUNTER on BluRay

by Canfield, October 21, 2011 3:43 PM

It has been widely remarked on that there are many versions of Manhunter floating around. Without getting into all of them it is worth mentioning that this is the 120 minute version. Is it theatrical? An extended cut? A director's cut? The trustworthy DVDtalk has it listed as the theatrical, other sites dispute that and I wasn't able to dig out my other two versions of the film to compare notes. Such relatively minor annoyances aside it was a relief to find that the film looked better. Of course Manhunter is a dynamite film with one of the best performances of underused actor Tom Noonan. Nice to have it on Blu. There are no extras listed here which is a shame.

For what it's worth, imdb lists the theatrical as 119 minutes and the director's cut as 124, so I'd guess this is the theatrical.

This is the same disc that was released in the "Hannibal Lecter Anthology (alongside Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal) a couple of years back -- so it's the theatrical cut and has no extra features at all. On the upside it's a fantastic transfer and ironically looks leagues better than both the Silence and Hannibal BDs. There's a recent UK release that includes the director's cut and some extras (Mann commentary, interviews and featurettes), but the DC is in standard-def (some of it exists only on analog tape, but even the portions carried over from the theatrical cut look like crap) and the transfer of the theatrical cut is inferior to the U.S. disc. So kind of a tough choice.
