HANNIBAL on BluRay

by Canfield, October 19, 2011 1:18 PM

Hannibal (2001) is one of the great modern monster movies. The film manages to trade on, and ramp up, the character of Lecter as an iconic bogeyman while at the same time trumping him as a grotesque by the creation of the brilliantly realized villain, Mason Verger. Will someone please explain to me the logic of barebones BluRay releases of films that have great SE DVD editions out there. Or better yet explain the logic to MGM which has been doing this alot lately. The picture qualiity here is solid, a definite upgrade from the DVD but gone is the Ridley Scott commentary, and solid package of extras that would have made this a stellar pick of the week. Anybody who purchases this for the upgrade will have to hold on to both versions. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I much prefer getting rid of my old DVDs as the BR versions come in. Still if you don't already have it or can't wait for the inevitable BR SE this is as mentioned a solid upgrade in picture.

And Buy some Mentos or Dr. Lecter will eat you.

Hm, I already have this in blu-ray in a boxset from perhaps a year ago. I have not checked the image on the br-version, but it has all the extras you describe. http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/16095964/Hannibal-Lecter-Trilogy/Product.html?searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&searchstring=hannibal&urlrefer=search

Hi Fetch Fox,

I'm not sure of other US releases but this one doesn't have those extras. The link you provided goes to the UK release Box Set.

The UK boxset might be relevant to some here on twitch. I wish I could say that it's region free, but beyond Silence of the Lambs (which is A, B, and C), none of the boxes say.

The separate titles of this set are listed on amazon.co.uk as regionfree. And the regionfree UK "Hannibal" Bluray by Universal has all the extras Dave mentions above as missing on the MGM disc.

It must revolve around money, there is no other explanation really.

Oh and nice to see that UK box set. Have to pick it up since I have none of these on Blu.

This is oe of the very few films I've fallen asleep watching,
Maybe I should try to rewatch it, but as good as it looked, something just didn't connect with me, whether it was Julianne Moore stepping into Jodie Fosters shoes, I don't know.
