Donnie Yen Talks IP MAN 3!

by Hugo Ozman, October 21, 2011 8:07 AM

Donnie Yen Picture.jpgIp Man is action superstar Donnie Yen's signature role, and both of his IP MAN films became phenomenally popular internationally. Early last year, to the disappointment of many fans, Donnie Yen ruled out the possibility of appearing in another IP MAN film.

However, in a recent CNN interview, Yen actually discussed the possibility of making IP MAN 3. He stated that his work schedule is filled up till the end of next year; and during this period, he would like to explore and utilize every acting opportunity to try playing different kinds of characters. After that, he 'may consider shooting IP MAN 3'.

This is great news indeed, and there is certainly enough material for a third Donnie Yen IP MAN film to be made, especially with the introduction of Bruce Lee's character at the end of IP MAN 2. One can anticipate that the third film will focus a lot on the relationship between Ip Man and his most famous pupil.

Of course! One week after I bought the boxset...

I hope by then he'll have reconciled with Wilson Yip ; I seem to remember they are not in good terms anymore.

I don't believe they are in feud or something, just that they are too busy with their own projects. Reports of Donnie telling reporters during Cannes that Peter Chan is a better director than Wilson Yip only got out with HK media and they often have the tendency to publicize unfaithful stuff. They even went as far as reporting, due to a misunderstanding of an interviewer, that Donnie disrespected wing chun and said he himself made it famous after Ip Man 2 came out. I mean, why act in the films when you don't even like doing films about wing chun or traditional Chinese styles in general?

Anyway, I can see why they want to continue with the franchise but I'm honestly don't find any spark with a third film. Probably unless the film takes off right after Part 2 where Yip takes Bruce as his disciple during a brief time of period and at the same time still has to deal with struggles (new masters?) in Hong Kong while founding his school or something.

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying that.
Actually, I think a third film focusing on the ageing Ip Man would be a great way to close a superb trilogy. But than they'd have to wait for Donnie to get noticeably older...

Um...you mean IP MAN 4 right? Cuz i have Ip man 3 in my kung fu movie shelf.

I think the Ip Man 3 you have is IP MAN THE LEGEND IS BORN, a prequel that is not from the makers of Donnie Yen's Ip Man two-fer.

That one is actually in my IP MAN boxset as IP MAN 0...

please don't bother, his movies are not very boring!
Flash Point, SLP type of movies will never be made again.

Ip Man 2 was not that good and movie was full of itself. Legend is Born IP, was an AMAZING movie! I'll be looking forward to Legend is Born IP 2 rather than Ip Man 3.
