Bong Joon-ho's The Host is back, and this time the monster is coming at you in three dimensions.
Bong's South Korean creature feature was a massive hit at home and abroad, shattering local box office records while earning a loyal following around the globe. And yesterday a new version of the film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival, one converted to 3D. Says Bong about the process:
It was interesting to watch something that I directed in a different format. I had wanted to reinterpret the Han River, a familiar space for Koreans, in an exotic way, and the 3D effects do highlight the sense of space that I had wanted to capture. The visuals also brought back memories of what I felt myself while shooting by the river.
Does this tinkering with the original mean that the long talked about sequel - either of them, at one point multiple parallel sequels were planned, one set in China and one in Korea - is getting any closer? Maybe. Executives at the Korean production house say they are currently aiming for a 2013 release, though that date has shifted so many times that, at this point, I'll believe it once it's actually on screen. Regardless of when it arrives, though, it won't be Bong directing. He's currently at work planning an English language feature as well as his long talked about collaboration with Park Chan-wook, a big budget adaptation of French graphic novel The Snow Piercer.
