THE RAID Trailer Will Punch You In The Face!

Thumbnail image for TheRaidSalesArt.jpgMerantau writer and star duo Gareth Huw Evans and Iko Uwais debuted their second feature together last night at the Toronto International Film Festival. Titled The Raid it's a bad ass fusion of Die Hard and Assault On Precinct 13 with a body count that would make John Woo blush as the bullets, blades, sticks, elbows and feet get flying early and never let up. The audience response was, to put it mildly, enthusiastic.

And today, to put a bit of an exclamation point on the whole affair US distributors Sony have released the first red-band teaser for the film coupled with the announcement that Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda is currently hard at work creating a score for the picture's US release. Here's their official announcement:

Culver City, CA (September 9, 2011) - Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) has teamed-up with LINKIN PARK's Mike Shinoda to create an entirely new musical score for the ultra-intense action picture
THE RAID, starring break-out martial arts sensation Iko Uwais (Merantau) and Joe Taslim (Rasa).

This collaboration will mark Shinoda's first feature score.

"This film is wall-to-wall action, and one of the most exciting pictures of the year.  Dropping a brand new score by Mike Shinoda on it will be like adding a whole new main character to a picture that's already cranked to 11!," said Dan Primozic, who negotiated the agreement on behalf of SPWA.

Adds Shinoda, "The intense visuals and compelling story of THE RAID have made this an exciting first venture into scoring for me.  I'm thrilled for Linkin Park fans to see--and hear--this film."

The high-adrenaline film produced by PT. Merantau Films and XYZ Films and directed by Gareth Evans (Merantau) enjoyed its North American debut last night at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival's "Midnight Madness" screening, but included the original score as yet untouched by Shinoda's sonic stylings.

Director Gareth Evans said, "It's an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to collaborate with such talent on the score for the film.  I can't wait to see what new angle they will take to enhance the impact of the film."

Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films commented, "Working with a talented musician like Mike Shinoda is a dream scenario because his vision and sound are a perfect compliment to the intense energy and emotion of THE RAID. Gareth and our collective teams are thrilled to be able to fuse these extraordinary elements together."

SPWA has U.S. rights and Celluloid Nightmares is the worldwide sales agent for the film.
MTV had the US debut of the trailer earlier today, but for those unable to view the MTV feed thanks to their physical location Twitch is proud to present the trailer to the rest of the world. Strap in and take a look below.

Looking pretty sick. Looks like they finally matched the ferocity and intensity of HK-style action, especially that fall at the end. YIKES! Not sure about Sony execs meddling with the soundtrack, but it doesn't sound laughably out of place as previous efforts.

This look even more awesome than Merantau. If it's true Berandal is going to be the sequel after this, I would really like to see how they're going to top The Raid.

Too bad about replacing the music. But, if SONY thinks that's going to help sell tickets, put bums in seats, and in turn help Gareth get future funding for other projects then I might be okay with that... in a while... maybe a few days to mull it over. I liked the soundtrack last night.

I'm so jealous to those who managed to watch it at TIFF.

Now I desperately want to see this before they louse up the score. M-M-M-Myke Shinoda is no Trent Reznor. Does Linkin Park even still have fans?

Not after the last 2 albums.

35 million people on Facebook disagree. The stuff Mike has turned in so far is really good.

"35 million people on Facebook disagree"

Same amount as Justin Bieber.
By your logic, his music would also be a good choice.

user-pic

No, by my logic the people who said Shinoda has no fans are wrong.

Never equated popularity with quality. What I said is that the stuff Mike has turned in for the film so far - including the music on this trailer - is good.

You're going to have to work harder than that - and develop a better grasp of logic - to spin my words to your own agenda.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

This trailer has sold it to me BIG TIME, that was fucking sweet...

Looks great although a bit of the shaky cam during some of the action and fights was annoying.

This trailer has me sold so hard. I thought Merantau was solid, but this looks way better. I cannot wait. I hope they include the original soundtrack on the inevitable bluray release. Even if it's just regular stereo I'd like to have it.

man that is incredible!

when is this coming out?

Wow, way more violent than expected. This looks awesome. I can't wait. Iko Uwais is going to become big.

What are the chances of Hallway scene from OLDBOY getting recreated in this movie?

That fall in the end is good enough to for us all to go see this movie.

I happen to be visiting a friend in S.Korea during the Busan film festival next month. The trailer won't load for me (slow internet), but I got as far as seeing a logo for BUSAN.

Will this be showing there? This would be my first film fest, but I get confused between Pusan/Busan/International Film Festival/Pucheon (is that even the same?) Fantastic Film Fest.

I was a huge supporter of Merantau, having trained Pencak Silat for a few years. Can't wait to see how it's been used in The Raid. If only the internet would hurry up.

Mike Shinoda score in this trailer is pretty badass!!!!

Probably the only time I've been really hooked by a non-Hong Kong action movie. Will keep an eye on this one.

Holy cow, this is kick ass! Want now!

I always wondered why foreign film makers don't shoot horror movies in Indonesia. That place is so rich in supernatural stuff. Maybe it's a start.

user-pic

Holy shit. It's like the corridor scene from old boy, but 30 of them!!!! Frickin insane. Can't wait for this to be shown in the UK.

I heard that the original score is quite good just like in Merantau, I hope the new score won't make it a lesser film. Even when the music so damn good, it could create distraction. Can't wait to see this in Indonesian Cinema - with the original score. Oh it's still some months away....

I saw this last thursday at TIFF and it was one of the Best Films I've seen at TIFF in a long time. Most Violence I've ever seen on film! It was Amazing! I left the theater wanting to watch it again!

Sounds like a pretty sweet alternate soundtrack. I'll want to hear both, as I'm sure I'll be watching this insane looking hk throwback more than a few times.
