There are several ways to make Oscar night barely bearable, one of which is to actually watch it with friends and have everyone note in advance who is going to win, for EACH CATEGORY. You need to do things like that because Award ceremonies are inherently boring as hell unless you are at least somewhat invested with the outcome of every single award. And that way everyone also has a fair and equal chance to not end up at zero.
Although to be honest it would also be a big improvement if the bits inbetween the awards would be entertaining. Hence the use of a good host.
Due to certain circumstances I missed last year's Oscar Ceremony. Or rather: I do not seem to have missed anything. Never before have I seen the program's hosts so reviled as in March of this year. I think it was a safe bet we would not see James Franco and Anne Hathaway return on stage ever again (well, maybe just Anne if Hugh Jackman pulls her out of the audience once more...).
And indeed, one of the movie-related news items plastered all over the net today is the announcement that Eddie Murphy will host the upcoming Oscar Ceremony. Which can be cool. It's been a while since I've seen Eddie on stage, and the last time he presented a single Academy Award he was not afraid to curse (if mildly) or chide the Academy on racism (if mildly).
Which brings me to the following question: Eddie aside, who would you consider to be the perfect host for an Academy Awards Ceremony? Living, dead, or both (this is Hollywood after all)?

I'd be lying if I would not put Ricky Gervais here, just out of morbid curiosity.
Gervais would be great, so would Chris Rock.
Regardless, the oscars are pretty unwatchable, though either of those two guys when at least get me to watch the opening monologue at the very least.
Eddy Murphy hasn't been in the spotlight in a while, and his movie career, minus his voice acting work, has been in a downward spiral. This is an interesting choice. It can't get worse than Franco, and Hathaway last year. I only skimmed the awards show last year, but like you said, those two were universally panned.
I don't know about 'perfect' but I'd be interested to see Sam Rockwell as host.
Kermit the Frog. He's got plenty of experience as a host, has worked with all the big stars, and has a bunch of friends who can pop up when things are getting slow.
My vote is for Patton Oswalt. He's first off, a fan of real cinema. Second, he's a comedian who's very good at thinking on his feet which comes in handy when you have to riff off of whatever the hell comes out of drunk actors' mouths while they feign humility and gratitude. Then he could just close the show with 15 minutes of Robert Evans impressions.
