Taiwanese Film Composer Shih Jei-Yong Passes Away at 53

by Al Young, August 22, 2011 4:41 PM

The son of Taiwanese film composer Shih Jei-Yong 史擷詠 (aka Shut Git-Wing) has shared the disheartening news via Reddit of his fathers death this morning. When conducting an orchestra performance on Friday, Jei-Yong collapsed from a heart attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital but he never recovered.  His history of heart problems due to overworking and lack of sleep is a testament of his passion in music.

Shih Jei-Yong has scored for several films, TV series and commercials but hes probably best known for scoring the Hong Kong drama Red Dust, starring Brigitte Lin and Maggie Cheung, which earned him a Golden Horse award.  His other film works include The Anger, Girl with a Gun and Women Warriors of Kingsmen.

In honor of his legacy, I have embedded below his sweeping score from Red Dust, entitled "Until the End of the World".

RIP

By the way, the Reddit user who posted this is a girl, I'm pretty sure it was his "daughter" not his son.
