detective_dee_05.jpgIndomnia will be releasing Tsui Hark's DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME in the US this fall. It is great news because this action spectacle, starring Andy Lau and Carina Lau, is the best film director Tsui has made in recent years.

Official synopsis: A bizarre murder mystery brings together the most powerful woman in China, the soon-to-be-Empress Wu Zetian (Carina Lau, Curiosity Kills the Cat), and a formerly exiled detective, Dee Renjie (Andy Lau, Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon), at the infamous Imperial Palace. Hoping that he will solve the crime before her coronation, Wu appoints Dee Chief Judge of the Empire and implores him to combine his indisputable wisdom with his unparalleled martial arts skills to save the future of her dynasty. Director Hark Tsui (Seven Swords) teams with stunt director Sammo Hung in this heart-pounding, epic thriller inspired by the incredible true story of one of the Tang Dynasty's most celebrated officials.

Embedded is the US trailer.

Amazingly, this company seems to have actually remembered they bought the rights to this film... sometime in the week between when I ordered this Blu-ray from Amazon.uk and when it arrived in my mailbox in the US. Since a Blu-ray release is hardly a given from this company (and I wouldn't be interested buying a DVD release of this film), and a theatrical release in my town is a given NOT to happen... oh well, maybe next time, Indominia.

Also, who's Sammo Huang?

The long lost brother of Bruce Li.

I've actually seen his name spelled that way. I could be wrong, but "Hung" and "Huang" are romanized versions of the same surname.

Thrilled that this is getting a U.S. theatrical release. I had to miss the Asian Film Festival in New York, so I figured I was stuck with DVD.
