Does the world want a younger, prettier Robocop? Apparently MGM does as Twitch has learned that the Star Trek actor is the studio's top choice to take the lead in the upcoming reboot of the scifi franchise. There is no word as to whether director Jose Padilha agrees with the selection and the offer has not yet gone out but we're told Pine currently tops the MGM casting list.
If this pans out then it will represent a dramatic shift in the character. At the age of 30 Pine is a full decade younger than Peter Weller was when he first took on the role and much more a heart-throb movie star than Weller ever was. You put Pine into a movie when you want to attract a young female audience - an audience that Paul Verhoeven didn't give a rat's ass about in the 1987 original, which is part of what made the film great.
Am I reading into this? Yes, I am. But while Pine has shown that he is probably capable of more than the roles he has played so far have given him, this just feels like an odd direction to go. A pretty Robocop is a silly Robocop. It's a role that absolutely has to have some depth to it - and an actor who can carry all of that depth just through his face - if it is to work at all. I'm not a fan of this and would much rather see a different sort of actor in the part entirely. Someone a bit older. Someone with a history of delivering strong characters.
What about you? Who would you like to see as the new Robocop?

Apparently MGM has their Bad Idea Jeans on again.
They should totally be casting GUY PEARCE for this role. HUGO WEAVING as Clarence Boddicker and BRIAN BROWN as the head of OCP.
I demand an all aussie Robocop.
Taking this unnecessarily far, but:
Joel Edgerton as Bob Morden, Abbie Cornish as Anne Lewis, and Richard Roxborough as one of Boddickers Goons (Ray Wise or the guy who gets annihalted after the toxic-waste dip).
I'm done, until somebody gives me a job as casting director.
If this is indeed the way that MGM wants to go then I don't really see a Robocop with more than half his face covered with a mask. I'm guessing something more akin to Iron Man.
I'd have to agree with Guy Pearce as Robocop. He's a great actor and would do wonders as Alex J. Let's not turn it into an Aussie-fest and have Hugo Weaving in there, too. He can be Robocop in the sequel.
Hm i'll be damned, i can't disagree with Guy Pearce vs Hugo Weaving. Interesting. Kind of too obvious almost.
Chris Pine - not that bad, come on! Not one single problem with it do I have. I can't envision anyone but Weller, but I think the directing and script are bigger factors. With a ballsy script and director, Robocop starring Chris Pine would be awesome.
I do NOT want to see Robocop as a little kid.
What made Weller compelling was his soul. In story of Robocop OCP pick Murphy because of his character not his physical prowess.
With this in mind, why not really throw Robcop for a loop and open up a whole different set of ideas and issue to address and make Rococop a woman?
Who? that i'm still thinking about.
Sharlto Copley. Money.
Chris Pine all the way. He would make a great RoboCop I think :)
Chris Pine needs the chance to grab the attention of the male action fans. Star Trek was a good start and maybe the Jack Ryan character will help. I think he should be given the chance. I personally think that Karl Urban would be a better choice though. He is 40 and a good actor.
Come on, Robocop is a man in pain. Physically mutilated and castrated. there's no win for Alex J. You need some pretty hefty acting chops to carry that off behind a mask.
