Andre Ovredal's Troll Hunter has been the darling of the festival circuit over the past year and has won raves on its limited US release but Ovredal may have just been out done by one of his visual effects artists.
You see, Rune Spaans is a man with an enormous amount of talent, access to all of the Troll Hunter raw materials and a deep and abiding love for Star Wars. And when you put those things together what you get is The Troll Hunter Strikes Back, an absolutely astounding fusion featuring Troll Hunter characters dropped into the finest moment of the Original Trilogy. Spaans describes it like this:
Watch it and be amazed below. One of the creatures in The Troll Hunter is missing an arm. When I first saw that, I knew I had to make this Empire tribute! What I've done is to take the scene from Empire Strikes Back, erase the existing characters, and then animate and re-composite the characters from Troll Hunter into the Empire footage. It's a pretty complex animation job, which took me around three weeks to do.

I hope you don't mind me coming with a little correction. This is not a mashup, which is the editing of two sources into one. It's a fairly complex animation and effects job, where the original characters have been erased from Empire Strikes Back, and the Troll Hunter characters are animated and inserted into the old footage. Think of it as Forrest Gump with laser swords.
Read a bit more about it on the youtube page for the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGCHYw9n02s
That's just spectacular. Great work.
My favorite part, comedically speaking, is the troll falling down the air shaft. I laughed pretty hard on that part.
Kudos to Rune for using the original SW soundtrack and not the one where Luke screams like a little girl as he falls down the shaft.
Great animation and effects Rune!
