The Director Of RAZORBACK Fills A Supermarket With Sharks. Trailer For Russell Mulcahy's BAIT.

Before he rose to widespread international fame as the director of the original Highlander director Russell Mulcahy was already something of a cult item for his debut feature, Razorback. That early effort was a highlight of the initial wave of Australian exploitation pictures, the stylish story of a giant pig wreaking havoc. So it seems only fitting that Mulcahy is returning to the familiar waters of the creature feature with Bait.

Initially announced well before the arrival of Piranha 3D and the coming of David Ellis' Shark Night, Mulcahy's effort takes giant hungry sharks and drops them into a most unlikely location: A flooded supermarket.

In a sleepy beach community shoppers at an underground supermarket are terrorized by a crazed bandit when the unimaginable occurs: A monstrous freak tsunami swallows the town.

Now trapped, with rushing water threatening to entomb them in a watery grave the survivors discover they are not alone. The tsunami has brought unwanted visitors from the depths. Not only must they overcome the threat of drowning and the predator within their midst, but a threat far more deadly and far more bloodthirsty - hungry great white sharks.
Part of the delay on getting this one ready has been a bit of back and forth on who was actually going to direct. Mulcahy, who also wrote the film, was originally attached but stepped away at one point to take on a different job and was replaced by Kimble Rendall. But Mulcahy retains the lead credit on the film, which leads me to believe that he returned to the project at some point and it certainly seems to show his sense of style. Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck) and Xavier Samuel (The Loved Ones) anchor the cast.

the lads at JoBlo have turned up a trailer for this but given that it is watermarked it would appear that this is a leaked version and will most likely disappear soon.

Well, that's bizarre. This would make a good double bill with Burning Bright.

I don't think this is a Russell Mulcahy film anymore. Kimble Rendall came in at the last minute to take over.

Sorry, meant to say, I don't think Mulcahy RETURNED to finish, at least that's what I heard.

Correct, Kimble came in before production began, so if that's how things remained Mulcahy should only have a writing credit. But he is clearly listed as a co-director as well, so something changed somewhere along the line.

The biggest problem I have with Mulachy (short of the classic STYLE versus SUBSTANCE debate) is that his films seem stacked to the gills with filler. Lets hope this won't be the case.
