The story takes place in an ancient mountain village. There were spirits and tree monsters living on Black Mountain and these demons were always engaged in slaughter and bloodshed. The villagers all fear to enter the mountain and the Lan Ruo temple within the mountain.Need any more convincing to determine whether Wilson Yip's romantic supernatural film A Chinese Ghost Story (or A Chinese Fairy Tale depending which Asian territory its playing in) is well-worth your while? The promotional team has unveiled seven and a half minutes of footage to the Chinese media outlet for further persuasion. Based on the video, here are some of my random thoughts or observation:
When Yan Chi Xia was still young, he chose Black Mountain to practice and realize his dreams of becoming a good Demon Hunter. He experienced many dangerous battles with demons in Black Mountain. His sword became more fearful, and he gets more powerful and confident as he overcomes all the spirits and monsters until the day he met her and their sad story begins.
Many years later, when the river at the base of Black Mountain dried up, the villagers made the decision to search for a water source on the mountain. Humans, ancient spirits and tree monsters enter into conflict. From there, another romantic legend emerges...
1.) Louis Koo plays the Taoist master and he's packing heavy artillery. Sort of like the Chinese version of Blade.
2.) Liu Yifei (aka Crystal Liu) is an excellent successor to Joey Wong as the beautiful young maiden ghost. How can anyone not fall under her alluring charm?
3.) In addition to a new soundtrack (see music video embedded below), the classic theme song, performed by the late Leslie Cheung is also present.
4.) Elvis Tsui who previously appeared in the 1987's A Chinese Ghost Story is back as a different character. He's that bald guy in many of the Category III films.
5.) Kara Hui as the demon witch/tree demon is wickedly divine. Kudos to the costume department.
6.) Two words: Skateboard sword.
The theatrical release date in China is on April 22nd. You'll find the seven-minute footage (No English subtitles with Mandarin dialogue) via Sina and Mtime embedded below.

Beautiful
I grew up with chinese ghost story 1-3, they were my most beloved movies and start for my love for asian cinema. Seeing the quality of work and similar tone in that preview gives me joy. The old movies had some very good stopmotion/puppeteering for the monster scenes, I hope they keep those techniques since modern CGI, especially in asian movies, is very bad and not suited for those movies imo.
My random thoughts on the 7 minutes
Lois Koo has really Big Ears :)
The female Lead is a look-a-like of Joey Wong, good choice, but
No one can beat the beauty of Joey Wong in „A Chinese Ghost Story“ ( IMO)
Unfortunatelly the new music can not hold up to the classics James Wong and Romeo Diaz
composed fort he Original, but luckily the original music was integrated into the new movie.
The Action and Special Effect are gorgeous here.
Surprisingly many ideas from the origial are still there and so the movie is recognizable as A Chinese Ghost Story.
I am really suprised by the footage presented here and since „A Chinese Ghost Story“ acompanied my youth, I always wished to see more of original Chinese Ghost Story then a cheap tv soap.
It seems somebody (Wilson Yip in that case) really understood the Original work.

It is present in the promo but I doubt it will be part of the movie itself. But maybe they kept it for the closing credits, which would be nice. Regardless, very much looking forward to this.
Nice to see Elvis Tsui again. He looks the same as 20 years ago!
By the way, why are Chinese promo's and trailers always presented in such low video quality? Don't they have decent internet connections over there? Why can't they upload this stuff in HD?
