No CGI. No Green Screen. Just Talent, Imagination And Craftsmanship. Astounding Trailer For SciFi Short C

Derek Van Gorder, I tip my hat to you.

Working on a shoestring budget while teaching himself practical effects techniques that have now been largely abandoned by the industry, the New York based Van Gorder is currently in post production on his short film C. What makes this film so astounding is that Van Gorder is executing it entirely without the use of digital effects and green screen. Everything you see has been built and shot by hand.

Set in the distant future, "c (299,792 km/s)" tells the story of First Lieutenant Malleck and her radical attempt to salvage reason in the midst of an interplanetary cold war.
This project essentially flips the middle finger at anybody who has ever said CGI effects are necessary to execute large ideas on a small budget. You don't need CGI, you need talent and pride in your craftsmanship. Van Gorder is proof of that and his film looks better on screen than virtually any CGI based big budget Hollywood science fiction spectacular of recent years. It'll age better, too. Check the trailer below.

[UPDATE]

According to Van Gorder this may end up being more than a short film. Or, at least, more short film than originally intended. This trailer was cut from footage shot for the original short and the response has been so strong that he is now exploring expanding the film either into a longer short or a full feature, depending on what sort of investment he can raise based on this footage.

Yep!

You have to appreciate the tactile benefits of old school techniques on film.
