Are you ready for Rutger Hauer: Vampire Hunter? Dario Argento certainly is, with Italian media lighting up today with word that the iconic Dutch star has been cast as Van Helsing in Argento's upcoming Dracula 3D. Production is scheduled to begin in May.
Hauer is suddenly hot again, with a number of high profile indie roles in the pipeline. And good on him as the man has never lost an ounce of his on screen magnetism. that said, while I find the casting compelling I find latter day Argento significantly less so. Could this be a relationship that revitalizes the slumping Italian master? We'll know soon enough ...

exactly what we were waiting for. And sorry Todd i don't think any revitalization is going to take place, Argento has never been famous as a good actors' director.

Shoot it on location in NYC's East Harlem again, so what if Wulfgar got aired out at the end? Rutger can be his evil(er) twin or diabolical clone out for vengeance! Yes!

Sorry, I know my comment earlier may have seemed like I was coming off as sarcastic, Todd, but I kid. I would love to watch Mr. Hauer in anything he is cast in, he is one of my very favorite of unsung actors who, gratefully, never joined the ranks of Hollywood's elite and thereby remains beloved.

Argento has never been an actor's director, true, but that truly shows the difference once he has a good one in the lead. I thought David Hemmings in "Deep Red" was brilliant, managing to look believable despite the weirdest things happening around him. Even the dialog given to him didn't change this!
Here's hoping Rutger can give a similarly anchoring performance. We all know and love Argento for his stylistic trappings but it's nice if there is at least one person onscreen who is down-to-earth enough for us to identify with.
A vampire hunter though? Hm.
