Indian Blockbuster ENTHIRAN (ROBOT) Now Available To Order On DVD!!

by J Hurtado, January 26, 2011 10:30 AM

Finally!  The biggest grossing, most popular, most insane, bestest, most awesome Indian film I've ever seen, Enthiran, is available to order on DVD!  Typically Indian DVDs are available within about 4 to 6 weeks of opening in a theater, however because of the magnitude of this film's success, and the fact that it is still playing in at least a couple of cinemas in Tamilnadu, it has taken a while for a proper release.

In case you need reminding as to why this is worth your money, I implore you to read my review below and check out the trailer again.  This film represents the confluence of many of the finest talents in India pooling their efforts into three hours of pure gonzo entertainment.  Rajnikanth, the most popular star in Indian film and a man who knows no age, plays a man probably half his age and does it pretty convincingly.  He is reason enough for me to pick this one up ASAP!

As far as a high definition release goes, there is no movement on that at the moment.  The production company has been ridiculously stubborn with the licensing rights for Blu-ray, and they haven't managed to get it licensed in the original Tamil because they are asking an inordinate amount.  However, if you are desperate to wait, there will probably be a Telugu dubbed Blu-ray by the end of February.  I'm getting the Tamil DVD for now, because I want Superstar Rajni's voice.  I can wait for the Tamil Blu-ray.

Go, order now!

I really don't understand the cover though. I know it was the first concept image they ever released for the film but it never appears in the finished film, so why not go with something else?

Didn't you say HBO was involved in some capacity with this? Do they hold any US home video rights?

That was reported at one point, but I don't think the deal ever went through. At this point the home video rights are very, very messy. The production company decided to release the film in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu languages, and sell separate rights for SD and HD home video presentations. The only things that are certain right now are that Ayngaran is the rights holder for the Tamil version of the film on DVD (not BD), and that Sri Balaji has the rights for the Telugu version on DVD/BD, but possibly only within India. No company has the rights to DVD or BD for the Hindi version, and Sun Pictures have made the BD rights for the Tamil version so expensive that no one has bought them yet. It is REALLY ugly, and it is actually playing out on a couple of internet forums right now threats of legal action being thrown around in public. I hope it gets settled soon.
