Hollywood Gets A Remake Right, Puts GODZILLA Into The Best Possible Hands.

Legendary Pictures, I tip my hat to you for you have just made the absolute best possible decision as to who should sit in the director's chair for your upcoming Godzilla film.

And taking that honor will be? Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards. Oh, hell yes. Edwards, bluntly, is brilliant with effects without being in love with them and able to generate spectacle without losing his characters in it. If the producers have the good sense to let Edwards do his thing with this they've just guaranteed themselves a film that will both kick ass and have heart. I can't imagine a better choice.

MONSTERS was good, but Edwards' one film doesn't have me convinced. Nor am I sure a film of this magnitude should even be put in the hands of a fledgling director. Also, it seems kind of a lazy choice to me. "Hey this guy just did a giant monster movie, he must be the giant monster movie guy!" Lucky we get someone other than some Michael Bay wannabe for sure, and I am grateful for that. We'll see...

Know who I wish was doing it? Nicholas Winding Refn. Why? Hell, I dunno, I just reallllly like Refn's films. :)

First of all, Monster's was garbage!Very boring, not much going on, and I wasnt' too impressed with the creatures either..now I can understand the studio's wanting to go cheap with an unproven director, but I seriously doubt Gareth should have been considered this project as his next directing gig, this movie will be massive and I'd personally like to have seen someone like Howard McCain who did a marvelous job and a pretty good Viking versus Creature movie called Outlander a couple of years ago..so I agree with you Sean the Butcher, it seems like a lazy choice, it may just be outta his hands! And another thing Todd, what makes you so excited for this Gareth Edwards guy gettin this massive Godzilla project, but yet every chance you get you dismiss, and diss the RZA for his Man with the Iron Fist movie? It's like what do you have against the guy?He could tell a thousand stories of kung fu and still be entertaining than Monsters! I sware you really have your favorites don't you?

The obvious differences? Not race, though you'd like that.

Edwards had an established TV career before making Monsters and had a broad range of experience from that. He then went and made Monsters for less than a million dollars and turned out a film that looks like something you'd see from a 10 - 15 million dollar budget, proving that he has an excellent grasp of the technical side of film making and a FANTASTIC gift for post production and special effects. When someone can take a mil and make it look like ten, you give them more and see what they can do.

And Godzilla is probably not his next film, by the way. He's already signed to direct another, as yet untitled, science fiction / action movie with Timur Bekmambatov (the director of Wanted and Night Watch) producing.

Edwards is, after Neill Blomkamp, arguably the most in-demand scifi director in the world right now. It's not just me who thinks highly of him.

I agree Todd, and no didn't wanna throw the race card in there, but you came of like a bigot in your previous comments concerning this particular project. But I wish G.Edwards the best on Godzilla, and regardless of what he's working on, hopefully it gets pushed back, so he can work on Godzilla since from what I've read before is that Warners/Legendary wants this out late 2012.

Todd, you should go back to your own article when you first reported about the Man with the Iron Fist. I can see nothing but hate when I read it, and to make it worse you had to throw in "what about RZA screams chinese to you?", until another poster had to inform you of your own historical ignorance that blacks were in ancient China. I pretty sure once this movie opens you'll find a reason not to like it and it's fine by kung fu enthusiasts like myself, but you'll have your Scott Pilgrim to watch!

Ah, you're crossing threads. What I said was "Because RZA screams feudal China to me." Key word there being 'feudal', as explained farther down in that thread. To me there are certain performers who just don't work in period for different (and often surprising) reasons that have nothing to do with overall talent. I could not imagine myself ever being enthusiastic about Sigourney Weaver in a period film, for example. Or John Cusack. The verdict is still out but I don't think I'd like Tom Hardy in period. On the hip hop front, though, I think Andre Benjamin is GREAT in period. It's mostly a style thing, I guess. The image RZA brings with him does not seem to fit that setting to me.

Haven't seen Monsters, though I've heard good things, obviously. It hasn't played anywhere near I live. He seems like he's a good choice, though. Just felt compelled to chime in on the whole race thing. As a black kid, I understand that certain buttons are pressed when we hear certain things. It's natural. We can't help it. But I've never, EVER read anything said by Todd that comes even close to pushing that button. I could tell from the Iron Fist article that this is where the whole thing was headed, but honestly, it's just really fucking silly. Save the accusations, folks. Please.

As for what Sean said, I could go for Refn directing just about ANYTHING right now. He's an out-there choice for a Gozilla flick, but sure. I'd pay to see that. I was disappointed with Valhalla, but he's been awesome otherwise.

Thanks, Tory, I appreciate that.

For you info Tory, I'm not african american, but I am a minority! And I could care less of what preference of an artists skin tone is and I don't think Todd sees it that way either, I just wanted to point out the fact that I haven't read an article where he has dismissed it as rubbish before it's even been shot or we've seen any stills, or footage from it. That's all I'm saying about the the matter. I do hope Gareth knocks it out the park with Godzilla, we need a good giant american monster movie unlike Cloverfield, that's mainly about the monster and how intimidating he can be.

user-pic

See, you're not reading what I actually wrote. I've never dismissed the film as 'rubbish'. I've made no value judgement about the film at all. I can't because it doesn't exist yet. What I HAVE said is that giving twenty million dollars to a man to write / direct / produce and star in a film when he has never done ANY of those things on a professional level is a Bad Idea. Again, if you want me to start thinking otherwise you need to give me a more tangible reason to do so other than "I like RZA, stop hating." I've given you tangible, factual, quantifiable reasons for my opinion. You've returned with nothing.

user-pic

Monsters was boring, not excited about this. I guess it could be worse. I hope he doesn't write it, the story, and characters, in Monsters were tedious to watch.
