One of the most notorious novels of the 20th century, Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master And Margarita has a thorny history, the book being in the middle of a fourth draft when Bulgakov died in 1940 and released only in a heavily censored version in 1967. When it finally made it out of the Soviet Union it was widely decried as heretical by right-leaning elements in the west.
A sprawling, time hopping satire of Soviet bureaucracy and religious history, Bulgakov's work is every bit as unique and potent now as it was when it was first written and suppressed. It has been adapted to film and television before and multiple versions appear to be in the works right now but it looks as though first out of the gate will be an animated adaptation out of Russia. The cat in the image above? That'd be Satan incarnate. I'll leave it to you to work out the rest, saying only that I'm very impressed by what they're doing here ...

wowowow
Wow, I've got to see it! Actually, the cat in the picture, Behemoth, isn't Satan himself, just his sidekick.
Meh. Although I find this to be a GREAT idea, it is waaay to poorly executed for my taste. Honestly : the "classical 2-D" drawings are cheaper than cheap, the animation obvisously lacks a few frames to run more smoothly, and the CGI inserts do not mix with the rest of the image. Nothing that blew my mind the way "Paths of Hate" did.
What the...I read these film sites all the time and I've missed hearing about this until NOW... DEAR GOD I LOVE THIS BOOK.
How fantastic!
First off, the cat is not satan, It's Beheemoth, part of Satan's entourage. That being said the animation looks ok, but in my opinion this book should be adapted in black in white and even better if it was in stop motion. It would look absolutly gorgeous in stop-motion animation. Of course, i will be cxhecking out this adaptation, it looks interesting.
