Real? Fake? You make the call ...
A piece of concept art has appeared online that many believe may be a drawing of the alien creature from JJ Abram's upcoming collaboration with Steven Spielberg, Super 8.
It could be, I suppose, though Abrams is an absolute master of redirection when it comes to online marketing. The man loves to cloud his work in secrecy and tease rather than dishing out straight information so I'd be quite surprised if he would release something this dramatic this far in advance. Still, it's an impressive little beastie.
* UPDATE *
Drew from Hitfix has weighed in behind the scenes saying he does not believe this is from Super 8, which raises the question: If not Super 8, then what could it be? A look over Paramount's upcoming release slate yields the following three science fiction possibilities, two of which also involve Abrams:
Steven Sommers' When Worlds Collide. Unlikely because while scifi not particularly alien oriented.
JJ Abrams' Star Trek 2. Trek has never been particular creature focused but Abrams threw a big one into the first one, so who knows.
Matt Reeves' Cloverfield sequel. An Abrams production, this seems the most likely if it isn't Super 8. I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to find an image of the creature from the first Cloverfield to compare this to but the design aesthetic feels quite similar to me. Similar enough that this could easily be a younger / smaller alien from the same species, I think.
This four films are the only possibilities in the Paramount slate between now and 2013 so unless it's from something in longer term development this beast is from one of these four pictures. Which do you think?

An alien with 6 limbs (4 arms). My first thought was Jon Carter of Mars bu that's a Disney production.
I keep forgetting about this movie, which is pretty much the only one I'm really jazzed about. As for the creature being a younger version of the Cloverfield monster, I'm pretty sure the creature in Cloverfield was supposed to be a newborn. If anything, I'd go the other way and say it would potentially be an adult. Either way, this is ONE CONCEPT SKETCH. Open up any given "Art of" book and see how many different development sketches there are for any one character.
I preferred the whale-monster that was leaked and supposed to be the CLOVERFIELD creature to what appeared in the film. Hopefully lightening doesn't strike twice in that way concerning SUPER 8.
I like the design. Bring on a bad ass Saturday matinee monster movie with kids-as-heroes. It's time! :)
