If the first teaser for Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmasters is anything to judge by then the film will be featuring some lovely calligraphy and not much else. I kid, but just a little bit, because there aint nothing in this but text and no footage at all.

The positive sign, though, is that the teaser for WKW's Ip Man bio-pic exists at all, a positive sign that the film is on track for a first-half 2011 release. Given WKW's preference for working without set scripts and his obsessive editing techniques he's had more than one film bog down in super lengthy post production processes but that does not appear to be the case here. The betting man would look for this to premiere in Cannes.

Check the teaser below.

Ashes of Time Redux is one of the best kung fu movies in history, although it would be better if all the action was not shot with a slow shutter. WKW makes movies in what, a matter of weeks? A couple months? But he spends far longer on his action films, which just goes to show how much more work they are to complete -even though they are not as respected critically.

A lot of folks talk about Chungking Express' quick turnaround, but even that (two months from pre-production to post) wasn't especially rapid by HK standards at the time, and that's an outlier in Wong's career. Shooting for Happy Together dragged on for nearly half a year (see the documentary Buenos Aires Zero Degree for more on that, plus excerpts from the mountains of unused footage and subplots), In the Mood for Love took 15 months (in part because he was already prepping 2046), and principal photography for 2046 itself lasted a year and a half, plus a certain amount of off-and-on shooting in the previous three years. Days of Being Wild was also over-schedule and over-budget, though I'm sure Ashes overshadowed it.

Pointless trailer, its not to say i'm not looking forward to the film but thats the worst teaser ever....

Agreed, lousy "teaser". This teaser shows no footage from the film, just some text.It wouldn`t have hurt them to showed some action scenes.

I agree that the teaser is nothig particular but still I think that THE GRANDMASTERS will be one not to miss in 2011

They've been working on this one forever. I remember back in 2009 Tony Leung broke his arm while training in wing chun for the fight scenes. This dude is hardcore and serious about the role.

I am glad that it's still going to be released - I was wondering for a long time if this film was even being worked on. One of those mystery under-the-wraps projects.
