Sometime, in the not too distant future, Indomina Releasing is going to let us know what their plans are for the films they have been acquiring for the past few weeks. This is not sarcasm. Really, truly, they're gonna talk to us and let us know what they're going to do so we in turn can tell you. So keep your eyes peeled for that announcement soon.

In the meantime they have added another film to their slate, Tsui Hark's DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME. I know a number of folk who had grown disenchanted with the filmmaker's output of late who were very impressed with this film. So once I know how Indomina is going to let me see it I will be very keen to... see it. Press release after the break!

INDOMINA RELEASING ACQUIRES DETECTIVE DEE

LOS ANGELES, (Date) - Indomina Releasing, a new distributor of feature films, acquired all North American rights to the Hong Kong box office hit DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME from international sales agent, Huayi Brothers following the film's screening at AFM.  DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME, starring Andy Lau (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon, Warlords), Carina Lau (Curiosity Kills the Cat, 2046) and Bingbing Li (The Forbidden Kingdom, The Message), was directed by Hark Tsui, written by Chen Kuofu and Chang Chialu and produced by Wang Zhongjun, Wang Zhonglei, Chen Kuofu, Shi Nansun and Tsui Hark. Indomina Releasing's Vice President of Acquisitions Rob Williams and Huayi Brothers' Senior Manager of International Sales and Distribution Leslie Chen negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. The deal was announced today by Jasbinder Singh Mann, C.E.O. of Indomina Group, overseeing global operations.

"Hark Tsui's DETECTIVE DEE redefines the martial arts genre," said Singh Mann.  "The film is a true representation of the Indomina brand, and we are thrilled to continue to acquire innovative, high quality genre-based films."

In the eve of the Empress' (Carina Lau) coronation, a series of unexplainable deaths takes place in the Imperial Palace.  The infamous Detective Dee (Andy Lau) is summoned to investigate the crimes.  As he unveils the truth, he is confronted with a series of dangerous, bazaar events, interfering with his efforts.  Will Detective Dee solve the mystery and save the Empress' inauguration?

DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME opened in theatres in China with great success, grossing $40 million USD to date.  The film was also a selection at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Indomina Releasing also recently acquired Griff the Invisible (Ryan Kwanten, Maeve Dermody), Wasted on the Young (Oliver Ackland, Alelaide Clemens, Alex Russell), Bodyguards and Assassins (Donnie Yen, Leon Lai), True Legend (Vincent Zhao, Zhou Xun, Michelle Yeoh, David Carradine), Fire of Conscience (Leon Lai, Richie Ren), The Pack (Yolande Moreau, Emilie Dequenne) and Outcast (James Nesbitt, Kate Dickie, Niall Bruton).

Watch, Indomina are going to make these movies all iPhone exclusives or some such crap.

They have a long-term strategy, they'll be taking them direct to holographic disc

user-pic

Maybe the plan is to shelve all the films permanently and then sue the shit out of as many Americans illegally downloading the films via BitTorrent as possible, offering the option of settling out of court for a few thousand dollars.

This would be a very convenient time for someone at Indomina to explain why I shouldn't just import this Blu-ray.

user-pic

Well, I won't be importing the BluRay.
Not because I'm against parallel importing (I'm NOT) but because it's region-A locked, boo-hoo-hoo!

user-pic

Don't worry, I'm sure a perfectly good Region B release will be out well before Indomina even announces their super-secret master strategy of dubbing all their films in Spanish to send to the Telefutura network before burying them forever. Wait, my bad, that''s Warner Bros and Miramax's super-secret master strategy, sorry. Indomina's super-secret master strategy is adapted from the proven business model pioneered by the Underpants Gnomes:

Phase One: Collect Films

Phase Two: ???

Phase Three: Profit!

user-pic

Is there any truth to the rumors that Indomina picked up the adaptation rights to DUKE NUKEM FOREVER, with Wong Kar-wai producing and Alejandro Jodorowsky directing from his own script?

user-pic

I would pay to see that movie.

As would I, if old age hadn't taken my eyesight by the time the stars aligned in such a manner as to allow its completion and release.
