Dick Maas' SINT Sets Box Office Records

Up until last week the top grossing Dutch production of all time - with a 16+ rating, at least - was Paul Verhoeven's Black Book, a huge budget war epic from an internationally renowned director. This week? That title belongs to Dick Maas and his 80's style slasher Sint. Yup, Saint Nick hacking and slashing his way through the population of Amsterdam is setting box office records in his home country. This makes me happy. Check the trailer below.

This has everything to do with the pre-launch hype this film created. The poster started quite a debate that spread across the country in mere hours. The fact that children might see this poster in theatres (imagine them seeing an evil santa) got some people completely mad.

A scandal like that is priceless of course :)

Yes, you'd have to have lived under a rock for the past month not to have heard of this film if you were in The Netherlands. Was there a similar hype in Belgium?

Oh, and here is my review:

I was talking about The Netherlands :). Even though I live in Belgium I pick up more from the Dutch media than from local media (parents in law have a television, we don't).

From what I've heard though, word travelled well in Belgium too. Sinterklaas is still much bigger than Santa here, so an evil Sint is quite a big deal.

And with Rare Exports charging in as well it seems that Evil santa films are on the rise. Now why the hell can't I get my killer santa movie made?
