He's a cagey one, is Lars Von Trier, so bear that in mind when you read his recent comments about his now in production science fiction thriller Melancholia. Because they might all be false. But here's what he says of his film in a new book excerpted at Denmark's Politiken:
In 'Melancholia' I start with the end. Because what is interesting is not what happens but how it happens! So we begin by seeing the world being crushed, then we can tell the story afterwards.
So there we have it. Total planetary destruction as the starting point. He actually goes on to say a fair bit more about his cast of characters and the origins of the story - based, not surprisingly, on his own childhood fears as has been the case with much of his work - but as I'm trying to avoid finding and spreading spoilers on this one as much as possible I'll leave those for you to head over and check out for yourself.
