Video Home Invasion: Arrow Video and the Battle Royale Blu-ray!

by J Hurtado, October 14, 2010 2:30 PM

I promised you news, and I've got it!

A couple of months back, Ard posted some great news about Kinji Fukasaku's final masterpiece Battle Royale coming to Blu-ray from our friends at Arrow Video.  It was all true, but what hasn't been confirmed are any kind of details at all about the release.  Well, I've been pushing on Fran over at Arrow to give me something juicy exclusively for Twitch readers and I managed to get an exclusive for you!

Arrow Video will be releasing BOTH CUTS of Battle Royale in high definition from brand new  restorations of their own on November 29th!  This will be the very first Blu-ray release of either edition!  It is sure to blow away the available editions as far as picture and sound quality go, as well as the fact that the UK had previously only had access to a less than stellar NTSC-PAL conversion of the director's cut, which is the one I own.  To get both cuts, each on their own Blu-ray disc is great news!  Oh, but it doesn't end there!

Fran has also told us that Battle Royale will be available in a limited pressing of 5000 individually numbered units!  Arrow Video will also be including some nifty limited edition exclusive extras which I cannot yet divulge, but trust me, it will be well worth your money!  Fran tells me that this is no cash grab fakey limited edition, once the 5000 are gone, there will be no more printed, so get your orders in now!!!  I've added the purchasing link below, please order through us and help Twitch to keep bringing the great news, and maybe I can talk Fran out of some more info when the time comes...

Do you know if the Blu-ray will be region code B or region free? Not sure if Arrow has been coding their discs or not.

No official word on region coding yet, I know this is the question on everyone's mind. So far, all of Arrow Video's releases have been region free, but that isn't necessarily written in stone. I will say that if you are interested, you should place your order now through Amazon. They don't charge until the item ships and canceling orders is very, very simple.

Never preordered a movie before now. Thank God I've been waiting for this.

On your advice, Josh, my man, I'm ordering.

The best decision you'll make all day!

I put in an order too! Thanks J! Though, is it wise to make this purchase if I'm in the States, whether on not it's Region B. Is there a PAL / NTSC issue I should be aware of?

user-pic

There will most likely be PAL content in the extra material on the DVD which is a third disc, this is my guess based upon Arrow Video's previous releases. The region B issue is probably more pressing, although, as I mentioned above, Amazon is really easy to cancel if the news appears before orders ship, which is the case 99% of the time. I'll keep you all updated.

Pre-ordered and marking the release date on my calendar!

Wait, so is there a less-special edition of the Blu-ray that won't be limited to 5000 copies, or are there only going to be 5000 Blu-rays of BATTLE ROYALE? Because in the case of the latter, that's a pretty massive dick move considering the demand.

user-pic

The former. In retrospect I realize my article could be read either way. There will be a limited run of 5,000 Battle Royale Blu-rays with special extras. When that runs out, there will be additional copies made that are "less-special".

user-pic

Will the DVD also carry these set "Extras" and be among the 5000, or is it the lesser-special version? I have the Tartan Asia Extreme "Special Edition" 2-Disk version and hopefully there's reason enough to warrant antoher purchase, since this one hasn't failed me yet...

There will be a limited edition run of the DVD as well. 5,000 on Blu, 5,000 on DVD, there will be special packaging for the limited editions of both, as far as I know. Again, I would recommend placing your pre-order with Amazon soon to ensure that you are at least in the queue. When further specs are announced, if they aren't worthwhile to you, you can easily cancel the order.

I'm sure the BD release will be Region Free based on Arrow's track record but what concerns me is that the special features will all be in standard definition and thus, PAL encoded, which will black out those with Region A players. That would then make buying the Limited Edition quite pointless for Region A owners. I guess we'll all have to wait for upcoming news.

I'm less concerned about Arrow's track record with region coding than I am about what conditions Toei lawyers might have insisted on. I would expect that they felt pretty burned by Tartan's sleazy move putting out that NTSC R0 "UK" release, seeing as how they militantly guarded the US rights to the film over the years, only to see the value of those rights undermined by their UK licensee. They may not be eager for a repeat of that.

This is certainly a concern. Arrow Video has just tweeted that they will reveal the answer to the question on the Cult Labs forum (see the link in my article). The Cult Lab forum is really great for keeping up with these titles, though, and even if they weren't the gatekeepers for this info, I would still recommend checking them out. I don't know when the announcement will be made, but certainly it is worthwhile to check.

I take it, Mr. Hurtado, that you weren't responding to my concern, right? I wasn't sure who you were referring to? If not mine, then would you humor me, please?

user-pic

You're probably right about the PAL extras.

Well, thank goodness for my region-free Oppo blu ray player which can also convert PAL/NTSC for playback in US televisions.
