GAMERA Going 3D!

If ever any particular genre of film was well suited for 3D technology then surely that genre is the old school, man in suit style Japanese kaiju - or giant monster - film. Grown men dressed up in latex monster suits wrestling and stomping their way through scale models of Tokyo made of cardboard and doing it in 3D? Hell yes. And it looks like that's exactly what is coming to a theater near you soon, provided that Japan happens to be near you.

Riding on the back of the publicity wave expected to accompany the new Hollywood spin on Godzilla - also planned for 3D - Japan's Advanced Audiovisual Productions (owned and operated by Godzilla Versus The Smog Monster director Yoshimitsu Banno), with the backing of Kadokawa Pictures are preparing Gamera 3D.

The flying, fire breathing giant turtle is arguably second only to Godzilla in the overall kaiju pantheon and Banno plans to feature the beast in a forty minute short shot in 70mm and 3D for exhibition in IMAX and regular theaters around the country. With roughly one third of the budget already raised the producers are hoping to raise the remainder and complete production for April of 2012. Which, conveniently, is right on time to line up with the Hollywood Godzilla release, so take a guess what they're going to try and match up their screenings with.

Best news this week! Seriously, I could do without the 3D, but men in rubbersuits, stomping on cardboard cities is pure blissful nostalgia. Let's just hope Banno doesn't run into the same roadblocks he had in his attempt at the Godzilla / (Death) Hedorah sequel (so to speak).
