Will He Or Won't He? Rumors Flying That Kitano's Next Will Be OUTRAGE II.

Anybody else remember when it was announced - absolutely and for certain - that Takeshi Kitano was going to make Zatoichi II? It made sense. The first film was his biggest financial success and apparently he'd even re-dyed his hair for the part. But it wasn't true and the film never happened.

And now the same thing seems to be happening with a supposed sequel to his gangster picture Outrage. Citing the decent box office numbers and Kitano's desire to expand upon the world of the film, numerous Japanese sources reported today that Kitano's next film would - absolutely and for certain - be Outrage II. Most - Yahoo and Sankei Sports among them - have since retracted, pulling the reports from their websites.

What does it mean? Who knows ... the story could be completely false and was pulled for that reason. Or it could be completely true and was pulled after the publicist threw a fit for it having leaked this early. Or it could be somewhere in between, the possibility of a sequel being something bandied about by those involved with no firm decisions made. But what do you think? Do you want to see Kitano continue in the gangster world or would you rather see something else from the iconic performer and director?

Outrage II huh ... who knows, I wonder when the West will deem it appropriate to release this film to us. The last three Kitano's never made it to the big screen here, the last two didn't even make it on DVD.

A sad state of affairs for one of Japan's biggest directors.

Still looking forward to this one, I'll reserve my judgement about a sequel until after I've seen the first :p

While I'm a little surprised that nobody took a chance on releasing Takeshis - which I find interesting and entertaining, though very self reflective - Glory To The Film Maker is just bad and Achilles And the Tortoise only marginally better. Anybody releasing any of them is guaranteeing themselves that they'll be taking a loss. Outrage already has a distributor locked up in the US, at least, not sure about other areas.

I'm pretty sure Takeshis didn't sell well here either. Very few Asian films do, be it arthouse or mainstream. There are a few labels specializing in Asian films, but their selection is either extremely shallow or just plain random (they did for example release Kei Fujiwara's Organ over here ... of all films).

That said, I really liked both Glory and Achilles and I'd rank Takeshis as Kitano's second best film of all. I'm just pissed at bad availability in general I guess :)

This is very surprising.
Outrage was really nothing special.
Entertaining, but very far behind of any Kitanos works.

I'd prefer Zatoichi II still, to be quite honest :(
