UPDATE [Cover Art!]: SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD DVD/Blu-ray Up For Pre-Order!

by J Hurtado, September 23, 2010 4:30 PM

November 9th!  The big day!  I know there is a big divide among film critics and film-goers about this film, but I come down firmly in the pro- camp.  It seems like a love it or hate it kind of movie, and that was the way the critical response seemed to approach it as well, there were very few indifferent responses.  But, I guess that can be worn as a badge of honor.  It inspired a reaction in almost every single person who same it, and that is saying something.  Anyway, the date is set, pre-order links are ready, and the extras are accounted for.  By the way, the extras are appropriately massive.  Edgar Wright doesn't like skimpy home video editions, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were loaded, and the trend continues.  So much stuff!!!  Order away!  Use our links, every little bit helps.

People keep talking about the critic community being split down the middle on this film, there's a great divide and all that. It's at 81% on rotten tomatoes. Is that really such a great divide? If you look at the score for the RT community, it's at 87%. The imdb rating is at 8.1/10 out of over 17 000 votes. There is no divide. Most people loved this film, and a minority did not. I loved it. November can't arrive soon enough.

I wasn't really referring to the percentages, but the tones of the positive and negative reviews.

Scott Pilgrim is the worst film I've seen this year. If most people loved this film, why did it TANK super hard at the box office?
It tanked because it was sh*t.

user-pic

And all those people loving it are just saying so to annoy you. And it worked!

Scott Pilgrim "tanked" because it was a 60 mln usd film aimed at a 20 mln usd market niche, and hoped word of mouth would take care of the rest.
Which actually still might happen now that it gets released in the home-market, by the way...

Dammit, do I really have to break down and buy a Blu-ray player? the features on the DVD are almost pointless compared to the stuff packed on the blu-ray version.

Regardless of this release the answer is YES, you need to switch to BluRay! Now start saving for a decent HD-television...

Blu-ray is just about as awful as a format can get while still being a major upgrade from DVD. Those extra pixels are great. The high resolution audio is nice though studios are more ignorant than ever about the importance of original audio mixes. I grudgingly admit its technical superiority in those critical areas. But the format itself sucks fat hairy balls.

No unencrypted discs. Region coding. No mandatory DVD playback support (though all players SO FAR can play DVD, there are no guarantees for this, as there were with HD-DVD). No Mac or Linux playback support - I HATE having to download pirated copies of movies I legally own if I want to watch them on my laptop. (Or my desktop.) And other than the PS3, which has a small mainframe under the hood, it's sloooooow to boot and load a disc.

Pablo: The dvd does contain like four commentaries and stuff, which for me are probably the most interesting extras. And that list of blu-ray-exclusive extras looks a lot longer than it really is cos every list of BD extras apparently now lists all the generic features that all blu-ray discs have, like the PocketBlu app and stuff. I dunno what's up with that. But in any case I think there's gonna be a Blu-Ray/DVD 'combo' pack, which is what I'll pick up. According to some sources, anyway. Amazon doesn't seem to have that listed yet. Never bought one of those before - can anyone tell us whether that means they come with a seperate blu-ray disc and dvd disc, or if they're like double-sided with blu-ray one side and dvd the other, or..?

user-pic

sorry it does actually state in this post that those features are for the combo pack...but the Amazon link goes to a Page Is Missing page at the moment (as does the link to the dvd version apparently). Searching Amazon brings up a DVD release and a BD release and the cover on that BD page does say "Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Copy" but for some reason no BD-only release is listed (maybe there isn't one). I dunno, just a heads up for people to consider before pre-ordering, in case they might get the wrong one, but apologies if I'm missing something or have just confused the issue heh

Whoops! They must've changed the ASIN. Fixed.
