Magnet Releasing Picks Up I SAW THE DEVIL For US Distribution!

by J Hurtado, September 15, 2010 8:16 PM

Magnet Releasing, how do I love thee?  Ravenously right at this moment!  No sooner do I make it home from the local DVD shop with my very own copy of Bronson on Blu-ray than do I see some remarkable news:  Magnet Releasing, who just yesterday announced their acquisition of the Korean giant killer pig epic, Chaw(z), today announced that they've got the US rights to KIM Ji-woon's much anticipated I Saw The Devil

This film has been under some scrutiny in Korea for having scenes of intense brutality, so intense, that it was initially banned, for all practical purposes, in its home country.  It took chopping about a minute and a half to get general release in Korea.  Now the questions:  Which version will we get?  Will I Saw The Devil get a theatrical release here?  Will we get different versions in the theater and on home video?  I don't think we have the answers for these questions yet, but either way, I think we're in for a treat.

The dream team of KIM Ji-woon, LEE Byung-hun, and CHOI Min-sik is a Korean film fanboy's (or girl's) wet dream, and I am just such a fanboy.  I'll not bore you with details about the film as there are many articles in the archive that are far more articulate than I could be, however, I will bring you the exciting news as I find it.

This is great, great news. Magnet's been a great middle-man for getting some awesome movies from overseas. But if IStD somehow makes it to DVD in Korea before Christmas, I'm afraid I'll be going with that one.

It is a definite possibility for me as well, just to be able to see it. However, if Magnet gets this to theaters, that will scratch the itch until a US Blu-ray.

This can't come soon enough.

I saw the movie in Korea last August and it was pretty good. Not a masterpiece or one of the best movies Kim Jiwoon made, but the acting from Choi Minsik is awesome!
The character he embodies is a real psycho.

Glad to read that a company that truly cares for foreign movies is taken this one.

Yeah, I'll just wait and see about how much they care, and what their caring translates to in terms of the product we're given.
