Yes, it's total speculation and wishful thinking but it's speculation and wishful thinking that comes from Paul Lieberstein, executive producer of The Office and, therefore, a man in a position to make it happen.
With Steve Carell about to exit the hit show, and the show continuing without him, the big question is what sort of boss is going to replace Michael Scott. And if Lieberstein has his way it will be Harvey Keitel.
Lieberstein told EOnline that he thinks Keitel is the only one who can do the role justice and, while he hasn't made a formal offer yet, he has already mapped out a complete backstory for the character.
As long as we don't see his unit I'm all for this.

That's a long shot, Todd. In order for Keitel to be in the thick of it, he'd have to have hard commitment to such a comedy series, which I doubt he will be interested in. In any case, I'm not sure how well Keitel can portray a regular working stiff with no dangerous edges and lack of foul-mouthed ejaculations, given that his portrayals of such characters have almost universally struck me as flaccid in the past. Nonetheless, I admit that my head is more sufficiently engorged with morbid fascination to see Keitel give it his best shot in The Office. I'm quite certain he can peel back certain layers of the show to expose the deep innermost workings of some of the dysfunctional characters and thrust their relationship dynamics into the fore.
Five years ago I'd have agreed about him not wanting to make a commitment but given that he's just done TV (Life On Mars) I don't think that'd be a sticking point if he liked the material ...
