I can almost guarantee that regardless of how many Indian films you have seen, you have not seen one like Gandu. From a director who calls himself simply Q, Gandu falls very much in the gritty, indie, social realist side of the spectrum with its story of explicit sex, petty crime and angry rap music among disaffected youth. Soon to have its world premiere as part of the South Asian International Film Festival in New York, we've got your first look at the trailer below. And let the age-gate be your warning: This is not safe for workplace viewing.

This is not gettng shown in India right? I can already see the burned theaters in the news for daring to show a movie over there with this kind of material.

They all wear grass skirts, too.

Very interesting. Want to see more.

This movie is from Culcatta. It's more Bengali cinema than Indian cinema.

Indian cinema is a collective term. Definitely not Bollywood. This is the real cinema !

Cinema by nature should move and provoke. This does all that. That Indian Cinema should be represented by Bollywood only is perhaps a tad unfair. Love the feel of this. Best of luck to Q! and to Gandu!

love the feel of this as well, and happy that kolkata still remains as an unpredictable yet explosive location for highly progressive artistic endeavours. waytogo Q.

Agree with minhaj.hossain and basu.rajarshi: "Bollywood" implies Hindi-language cinema that's produced mainly in Bombay/Mumbai. All Indian cinema is not Bollywood.

This is Bengali-language cinema. Really surprised Twitch doesn't get the distinction.

The headline pointed out exactly this: that it's from India but not at all Bollywood. Beyond that, you may be surprised how few people who don't speak the languages can tell the difference between Hindu / Tamil / Bengali etc by hearing them ...

very interesting.. never managed to get my hands on other films by Q. would love to see this one for sure, although I think in India it will only be shared privately or through online purchases.
Cinema here has come a long way, and I'm glad there are people who are bold and honest enough to show the not-so-rosy and sugarcoated picture of urban youth in India. way to go!

Great, very smart, quite bold.Enjoyed it. How can I see the whole movie? This trailer is not enough, want to enjoy the full length thing...

Saibal Das, Chandannagore.

wow. I saw the trailer, and i was pretty sure it wasn't Hindi they were speaking (I speak Tamil :), and can only spot a one or two of the Indian languages ;-p)

Movie does look edgy, and as Damayanti says above, this will never be released in India.

probably might be a hit with the indie scene OUTSIDE of India though.

Whats the big deal if a bengali explore the dark side of the society? do we all have to copy bloddy american movies with impossible and ridiculous sci-fi nuts? why cant a bengali get appreciation for his work? there is love and there is hatred too.. we have cared the love till now now its time to turn the coin..
If u dnt agree.. yes u are the real GANDU..
