Like the headline says:

Los Angeles, CA (August 27, 2010) -- 24 frames, LLC has announced that it has acquired all North-American rights to the Mexican science fiction box office sensation "SERES: GENESIS" from Huma Films. This action-packed alien invasion thriller will open nationwide in Mexico on September 17, followed shortly thereafter by US theaters. The film was produced, directed and written by Angel Mario Huerta ("Inspiración") and stars Alejandra Barros ("Sultanes Del Sur," "Amar," "Matando Cabos"), Liz Gallardo ("Máncora," "Sangre de familia," "La última y nos vamos"), Humberto Busto ("Depositarios," "Niñas Mal," "Amores Perros"), Manuel Balbi ("Deseo Prohibido," "La viuda de Blanco"), Arturo Delgado ("Entre Canibales," "María José") and veteran actor Gonzalo  Vega ("A través del Silencio," "Tengo Todo").

When a young girl is found amid the wreckage of an accident caused by an alien craft, Mariel (Alejandra Barros), head of a secretive task force investigating the paranormal, must solve the riddle of a frightening message the girl delivers which suggests humanity is on the verge of extermination by a hostile alien force.

This is the first part of a trilogy. SERES: GÉNESIS is the beginning, SERES: EVOLUTION predicts the future of mankind and SERES: EXTINCTION will reveal the secrets of our destiny.

"SERES: GENESIS" is based on the wildly successful Mexican graphic novel published by Huma Comics. The novel is part of the Seres Universe series covering the three films and continues on in "Seres Chronicles". The first graphic novel in the series will be available in the US in an English language version starting in October.

""SERES: GENESIS" is another shining example of the tremendous new talent in film making in Mexico. This alien invasion picture is a first from Mexico. The special effects and its unique story are simply amazing", says Ludo Cremers, President of 24 frames. "Audiences in Mexico and the US will be thrilled by the rich universe brought to science fiction fans by this breathtaking movie trilogy and the Seres Chronicles graphic novels. We are honored to work with Huma Films and distribute "SERES" in North-America."

"I am happy to see the evolution from the graphic novel to the screen." Says Angel Mario Huerta, who directed, produced and wrote SERES: GENESIS. "I really had a blast working with the actors and bringing this novel to life. The Visual Effects will surprise a lot of people. I'm convinced this is the beginning of something really BIG."

"It was an amazing adventure working on this film and the adventure surely will be felt by the audience," says Alejandra Barros, who plays Mariel in the film. "They will feel what we felt, and this is a passion for the paranormal and the need to know what´s in store for human kind in this world."

"While the action sequences in SERES: GENESIS are exhilarating, it is the stellar performance by telenovela superstar Alejandra Barros that makes the story so chilling," says Jesús di Sica, 24 frames' Director of Development and Acquisitions. "Her scene with Luisa Guerrero, who plays Fernanda, the little girl possessed by aliens, is one of the creepiest and most memorable moments in recent sci-fi movie history.

Todd, I'm from Mexico and everything about this project spells SHIT. Soap opera actors directed by a talentless asshole. I'm all for genre films being made in my country, the problem is that, except for a few (Somos lo que hay), everything else is done like a Telenovela with Aliens/Ghosts/Monsters.

user-pic

very interesting what you said being there in Mexico.
the trailer or promo looks pretty bad actually and spfx as well.

I liked Sleep dealer, i believe it's a US/Mexico coprod.

eager to watch the one you mentioned

Wow dude... Calling the director a talentless asshole? Is that because you know him? or envy him? How can you say that when you haven't seen the film???

Another thing, I saw the trailer for "Somos lo que hay" and In no way compares to this one, it was actually one of the worst trailers i´ve ever seen and in no way reflects it is a horror film. I can´t say anything about the movie, but the trailer, sucks big time. Let´s see which one does best at the Mexican Box Office.

For your information, Seres Génesis is actually a very expected movie in Mexico and "Somos lo que hay is not". Not even the directors mother knows about that shit. But, Its true when you say your´e mexican, because mexicans are known for being like you, pieces of shit that only talk bad about the people that are successful.

I do apologize for the rough language, and indeed I haven't seen the film, but Envy??? Really??? Watch "Inspiración" and then defend the director of the movie in which you obviously worked on some level (or are friends or related to the director). But yeah, I might have been a little tough by calling him a talentless asshole, he's just a talentless nice guy.
I've seen "Somos Lo Que Hay", and, while not perfect, is far and above anything Angel Mario Huerta has proven so far he can do.
And as far as Box Office goes, according to your statement, Transformers 2 is one of the best movies ever made, and the Twightlight Saga, shines as a masterpiece of modern filmaking, I mean, they all earned a shit load of cash, so yeah you are right, this derivative and unoriginal SciFi Telenovela is sooo much better than a movie which has, and still is, making successfully the Festival rounds (Guadalajara, Cannes, Morbido, Fantastic Fest)
And yeah, I'm Mexican, and that has nothing to do with me criticizing "your" movie. What makes me call it a piece of shit, is how cheap, unoriginal, and badly acted the trailer makes it seem (and people involved production have said it is), and how no one, not even the directors mom, is talking about it here. Trash is trash, no matter where you are from and what language you speak. Being mexican will never make support bad films from my country just because it was made by my fellow countrymen.
Is it tough to make a movie in my country? Yes, but that is no excuse to support films that look, sound and feel like bad tv shows.
If it makes you feel better, if this movie had been made in the USA/Korea/France, I'd still would call it crap.

So now we have like what, 3 or 4 alien movies coming out soon?

user-pic

Sorry for the double post guys

So, you are basing your comments on what you saw of the director in Inspiración. Well, let me give you a nice fact. The director was 21 Years old when he made Inspiración. Do you know many 21 year old directors that can write and direct a movie that is then distributed by 20th century fox in Mexico and then Lions Gate Films in the USA??? and was one of the top grossing films that year???

I think at 21 years old, it was an amazing achievement, one you will never ever make, nor the "somos lo que hay" director. I can guess that the director has made an improvement since inspiración and it will show when you see Seres: Génesis.

Is that talentless for you???

So basically, making money means you have a good product? Really? Popularity doesn't mean quality.

Basically, making money means that people liked it. That means you have a good enough product that satisfies costumers. You tell me then, if its good or not?. Good enough for wannabe directors that critic everything that has success???... well no, but good enough for people that pay to go to the movies and entertain themselves? YES, definelty.

Sorry, but that´s the way it works.

user-pic

People liking something doesn't mean the product is good. A lot of people love heroin, that doesn't mean is a good product for you. Also, i love how defensive you are, friend of the director? Eres su compadre quizas? Cuñado? One of the actors? Your attitude is silly and juvenile, no wonder mexican cinema is a fucking mess. Stop acting like the douchebag elite of untouchable gods that you think you are. Criticism is perfectly valid, now go cry a river somewhere else, cuz this looks like X-Files a la mexicana.

Your example is one of the dumbest things i´ve ever heard. A movie is not like heroin you dumb pocho. Are you half mexican half gringo wannabe? maaan, get a life, actually, get a nationality. Criticism is perfectly valid YES, but one you´ve seen the film you nitwit, not before, if you do it before it only reflects envy or stupidity. It may look like x files a la mexicana to you, but you will never, ever ever do anything better that that and will always be the douche bag that can ONLY talk crap.

Not friend of the director nor family nor compadre, but a Mexican that is proud of his country taking a step up, because whatever you say pocho MF, this is a huge step for mexican cinema.

user-pic

I have zero tolerance with people blinded by stupid corny nationalism like you. I don't give a damn about the origin of a movie, if it's good it's good, if it's bad it's bad. I'm not promoting crap released from my country just for the sake of it, how is this a step up? A step in what? Making sci-fi movies? What genre it is doesn't matter, what matters is the quality of the product. But not that you would care it seems. Criticism doesn't reflect envy or stupidity, only a 12 year old Justin Bieber fangirl would believe something as simple minded as that. You also liked KM31 only because it was "OH WOW A MEXICAN HORROR MOVIE!"? You sound like the usual mexican media tool that thinks that producing copycats of good foreign movies is the way to go for mexican cinema.

I have every right to say that this movie looks like crap because it looks like crap in the trailer, and i every the right to doubt about the director because his previous film was an awful telenovela type of movie, which hardly stands as a good reference. So once more, stop using the nationality card here, because that has nothing to do here.

Ok, let me explain why it´s a step up. Because Mexico only does one genre and that is DRAMA. The mere fact that someone is adventuring to do a NEW genre is a step up for the Mexican Industry If you don´t see that because you live in a little town at the border, well, tough luck dude.

Read a little and you´ll see all the buzz generated by this upcoming film.

If you want to accept it or not.. THIS IS A BIG STEP FOR THE MEXICAN FILM INDUSTRY. I MEAN EVEN IMCINE SAY´S IT´S SO, SO NO POCHO WILL TELL US OTHERWISE.

user-pic

The funny thing is that most mexican movies barely make any money in Mexico, barely stay a week in the cinema before getting pull down, and barely anyone cares about these movies. They sink in total obscurity and nobody will ever remember them, but yeah, keep fighting the "good" fight dude. I rather be a pocho than somebody brainwashed by marketing and "patriotic" propaganda.

Cheva,

You are the film's director, right? You really should stop visiting the comments that mention you and insulting people that don't like it. It doesn't help your case at all.

I am really looking forward to watch this movie. I don´t agree with people who start criticizing the movie before they had seen it, even if they´ve only seen the trailer, you cannot make a movie review based on a trailer, period.

The Mexican film industry has seen a lot of growth recently and there´s nothing wrong with us being proud of it.

Not being a movie critic, but a normal person who likes movies, I am willing to pay the ticket for this movie from what I saw in the trailer and that´s good enough for me, the fact that it is Mexican does not matter when I am at the movies, the fact that it is Mexican makes me proud precisely because I have a good expectation about the movie based on what I saw in the trailer and the experience and background of the actors and the director.

I don´t expect this to be a bad movie, I have seen enough Mexican movies in these years and most of them were really good and I was satisfied as much as I was watching good american movies.
If you want to talk about bad productions made in Mexico, Hollywood is full of bad productions and every single year there is one or two good movies for every one hundred bad mediocre movies, actually Hollywood was made with bad productions. Because that´s how you build an industry, from the bottom up and not viceversa.

I take my hat off for Angel Mario Huerta, Alejandra Barros and all the actors, Corazon Films, Huma, and all those people in Mexico who take risks, who aspire to do better, to try and also 24 frames, LLC for believing in Mexican talent.

24 Frames recently adquired a far better Mexican Science Fiction film: Depositarios. Solid script, good performances, good-but-flawed movie. Check it out.

This opened here in Mexico last friday. It has had a pretty lukewarm response from audiences. Critics hated it. Bombed at the box office (didn't make the Top 10 and had mediocre numbers at best). I had a chance to see it on sunday. Five people walked out from the theatre, around 20 more stayed for the torture. The movie es bad. Really bad. And it really has nothing to do with the special effects (which where OK, but not great) or production aspects (although there were some sets that looked very cheap and some costume choices were pretty cartoony). The screenplay is terrible: cliched, boring, with horrible dialogue, just very childish and naive. The actor couldn't do much with the material they where given and some seem to be sleepwalking through the story. And the director's choices match the screenplay and performances: nothing happens for two hours! If you're attracted to the idea of Mexican Science Fiction, go find some wrestler films or direct-to-video movies from the 80's and 90's. You'll have more fun watching that than this shallow, boring story.
