Donnie Yen's no dummy. Now in the latter half of his forties and in higher demand than he has ever been in, Yen knows that he has only four or five peak years left in him and is packing as many projects into that time as he possibly can.
Just having wrapped up production is The Lost Bladesman, a historical epic from directors Felix Chong and Alan Mak in which Yen plays famous warrior Guan Yu. though Guan is a real figure all involved are making sure to point out that this is a fictitious story. The first images from the film have arrived online via SINA and while there's no Yen to be seen in these the images themselves are very impressive. Check them in the gallery below.

DY definately has talent, but this cramming it in and cashing the checks before he bites the dust seems a...a waste of talent?
Maybe he recognises ip man was a flash in the pan and is trying to milk it but i know SPL was 5 years ago but i reckon if they did a sequel now with a better script and either choreograph Wu Jing or Jaa in it ( as DY's choreography really is second only to Sammo Hung) and he can bring back some of that quality that he had begun. Maybe he can do it after he's retired. Who knows.
All i can tell is, that after DY, i cant see any other MA star who can successfully take his place and all the big movies with costumes and pop idols that he's done apart from the two IpMans, suck megadonkey balls and if DY really aspires to Bruce Lee's life philosophy,as he's been known for, he'd at least put on some kind of quality control standard on his own filmmaking output. IMO.
At this rate, Ip Man 3 wouldnt be such a bad idea. At least its being consistant with his output.
Not a waste at all, unless you're too picky of a fanboy. At least Donnie is action directing the movie (as well as other projects such as Legend of the Fist and Wuxia), and, as he always does when making new movies, brought a crew of martial artists (including good old Chin Siu Ho and Andy On) and stuntmen specifically for casting. And as far as Donnie having control over his movies goes, that depends on which projects and film crews he gets to work with.
