Quoth Anne Thompson:

"In many ways this has been the most anticipated casting announcement since Scarlett O'Hara landed Gone with the Wind."
I know I can get enthusiastic with the best of them from time to time but, really? That would make this the second most important and waited for female role in the entire history of cinema. And that's kind of silly, really.

But all that to say that David Fincher has just signed Rooney Mara - about to be on screens starring in his The Social Network - as Lisbeth Salander in his upcoming English language version of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. On the plus side for Mara, she was one of the only good things in the recent Nightmare On Elm Street remake. On the negative side, she was in the Nightmare On Elm Street remake and a cat in a bag could have looked like a good actor in that given what it would be compared to.

There's some hyperbole for you, Thompson! Hah!

I must be the only person on Earth who isn't going nuts about this adaptation. I thought the movie was okay and the book was pretty good but there is a frothing, lunatic mob that is waiting with baited breath for news related to Fincher's version of the movie.

Damn she's too pretty for the part, Yo-landi Vi$$er would have been a better choice.

Never seen her in a film, just know her from her sister, Kate. Anyway I might be the only Twitch critic who has yet to see the films.

I'm also reading reports that say the film is set in Sweden still with people speaking English with Swedish accents... sounds like the most expensive dub ever.

I haven't seen them either. Friends of mine did (after having read the books) and their opinion was: first one good, second one okay-ish and the third one is plain bad. That did not entice me to dive into this series, although my friends' enthusiasm for the books did make me read those. No regrets either, although each consecutive book gets more "pulpy".

As for the re-adaptations: that Swedish accent thing sounds odd (haha) for a project with Fincher involved. I'd be very surprised to see that actually happen...

It's happening, but they'll be real accents. At least some of them. They've already cast Stellan Skarsgaard in the film as well.

I don't think I have ever had the pleasure of hearing an American doing a decent English-Swedish accent. Generally speaking the films are passable within a Swedish context, but they work better as the Millenium tv series. I am quite surprised Fincher was even interested in this project. Albeit a talented director, I very much doubt this will be particularly successful. At the very least "Let me in" moved the story out of Sweden. Perhaps Fincher should ask Kenneth Branagh for some tips. Never seen Mara in action but I wish her luck.

Ah, Swenglish! That cute language made famous by Abba in the seventies...

But now I'm really wondering what the hell Fincher is up to, and why?
I still trust him to come up with an original vision on this material, but to say I'm puzzled is an understatement. Maybe there is something in book 2 or 3 that he feels attracted to, and is willing to do book 1 first just to get to it? The Swedish "Girl With a Dragon Tattoo" is actually a pretty decent thriller by all accounts, so even though I'm not surprised it's being remade in English (duh...) I'm surprised Fincher seems so eager to do it.

Book 2 is your basic revenge story with a side of family disfunction. Niedermann was enjoyable to watch in the film as an Aryan psychopath who is immune to pain. One wonders what Fincher will do with Paolo Roberto's character. And then there is book 3, in which Lizbeth does not do a great deal and only really comes alive at the end. Although it tied everything up, I found it to be the weakest and least interesting.
