Our own James Dennis is currently attending the Film4Frightfest, from whence he sent out this tweet via the official Twitch Twitter account (which you really should be following):

A Serbian Film pulled from Frightfest after BBFC seek nearly 4 mins of cuts to get an 18 cert.
More details will follow soon ...

Fuck that noise. Better to not show it.

Is 18 the highest rating for films in UK? Do they have an 'Unrated' over there or is anything over '18' banned?

Yes 18 is the highest cert possible (apart form porn which can get an R18 cert) but ultimately it's down to local councils, who rarely intervene. Westminster stipulated that Frighfest could only show the film if it had a BBFC cert. Councils can also overule a BBFC 'ban' if they want...

In truth, if there is any film screaming for an '18' certificate it's this one. And the banning doesn't surprise me at all since the BBFC has consistently been concerned about scenes which mix sex with violence, which is almost the point of this whole film.

Good luck trying to get this released uncut on DVD in the UK...

They need to see it a second time to tell that it's a legitimate film? Gee, that's weird.

I hope Frightfest gets it sorted out and is able to play the film properly.

Wow, Whats the point with 4 minutes cut. Might as well pull it. Video Nasties for the new century. Don't they have a Brit producer rep trying to sell it for them?

they're angry at Vukmir

Maybe they misheard him when he said his name over the phone?

To be honest, this really doesn't surprise me. When I saw it, I thought that there would be no way in hell the BBFC would pass it in it's current state. And removal or editing of the two scenes that break the particular taboos they hate would seriously destroy the impact this film has. Far better to pull it than to let people see a hacked version that will not only confuse, but remove the impact this film has.

Very sad indeed. I was hoping that the BBFC banning of films would stop after 'Grotesque'. The aforementioned was a pretty shoddy film so my hopes for A Serbian Film getting by the censors unscathed were some what optimistic. Well at least we live in a global economy so an import version will do just fine when it's finally released on DVD. I understand the need for a certain form of censorship but as an adult, or maybe it's the kid inside me, I just doesn't like being told what I can and can't watch.

I must admit I'm surprised that a film festival would fall foul of the same restrictions as normal cinema exhibitors. I thought they'd be able to show films which haven't yet been submitted for certification. Still, as Brett says, the film will be easy enough to pick up online, either by dvd import or illegal download. Personally though I'm choosing not to watch this, no matter how well shot and what the political context or artistic merit might be.

i watched this and im not surprised that theyve decided to pull it, if youve seen the full version then youve got to agree with the BBFC, frightfest is a horror film festival and the audience want to be scared even a little sickened but this is dangerous territory for a movie of this caliber. this shit can fuck you up and releasing it to the masses will cause uproar and will do some damage.not since "Salo" have i been this messed up, then again they say "Salo" is a classic now, so what do i know???
