Ian McKellen On THE HOBBIT: Not Under Contract And Getting Impatient.

Bye, bye Gandalf? It looks that way ...

It has long been reported that Sir Ian McKellen would reprise his Lord of the Rings role as Gandalf in the upcoming Hobbit movies but it appears that the same delays that led to Guillermo del Toro dropping off the project are on the verge of claiming McKellen as well.

Currently in New Zealand with a touring stage production of Waiting For Godot, a very beardy McKellen appeared on a New Zealand talk show to promote the play and when asked about The Hobbit stopped short of saying he was quitting but noted that he was not under contract, is getting old and has other things he'd rather do than sit around waiting.

We've got the video of the interview embedded down below but this does raise one immediate question: If McKellen walks, who plays Gandalf?

I would hate to see Ian McKellen leave the Hobbit. He truly owned the role of Gandalf but if I have to pick another actor, I would go with John Hurt. I sometimes confused the two actors.

To me, they look similar, but their acting styles are very different. I sometimes find Hurt wildly uneven in his performances (sometimes utterly brilliant, other times mediocre) and his voice doesn't quite cut it. McKellen on the other hand has amazingly consistent acting chops and he appeared in 'Extras' which just about clinches it for me.

Would be very sorry to see him fall off the project due to all of the 'faffing about' (technical term in the industry)

"If McKellen walks, who plays Gandalf?"

That guy who replaced to play Dumbledore when Richard Harris died.

And they can replace Gollum with Dobby.

Oh well... might as well give Daniel Radcliffe a role to be the young Frodo!
